Giratina, also known as the Renegade Pokémon, is a major antagonist in the Pokémon series.
It is a Ghost/Dragon Type Legendary Pokémon and member of the Creation Trio, a trio of god-like Pokémon, each possessing and embodying an element of reality. Its "siblings" Dialga and Palkia embody time and space respectively, while Giratina embodies antimatter. Along with its "siblings", Giratina possesses two forms; its Origin Form, its original appearance and the one it takes while in the Distortion World, and its Altered Form, the form it takes out of the Distortion World.
Giratina was banished to the Distortion World by its creator, Arceus, enraged by that, it started seeking Arceus in a mad attempt to take it down and get revenge on it, later partnering up with a human named Volo who wished to meet Arceus and conquer it to recreate the universe as a better one. Both were stopped by the player/Rei/Akari in the end, causing Giratina to have a change of heart afterwards.
Appearance
Giratina's Altered Forme is an immense and awe-inspiring Pokémon, bearing a striking resemblance to a colossal sauropod. Its imposing stature is supported by six sturdy legs, while its body is adorned with golden protrusions resembling external ribs, and crowned with majestic golden horns atop its head. The creature's neck is adorned with a mesmerizing display of five vibrant red stripes interwoven with four contrasting black stripes. Moving towards its back, a captivating pattern of black stripes extends seamlessly down to its powerful legs. The most captivating feature of this form is undoubtedly its magnificent wings, characterized by a rich black hue and adorned with three alluring appendages that resemble radiant girasols, a precious and uncommon type of opal that adds an enchanting touch to its already majestic appearance.
The Origin Forme of Giratina exhibits a more elongated and serpentine appearance, resembling an amphitheater. Unlike its Altered Forme, its wings transform into tentacle-like structures with red thorn-shaped protrusions at the ends. The mouth of Giratina is now positioned behind two appendages located in front of its face, which open up when it emits a roar or any other vocalization. The horns on its head remain unchanged. Furthermore, in its Origin Forme, Giratina possesses five rows of golden spikes that jut out from its torso, extending towards its tail. These spikes partially overlap with five gray and red stripes on its body.
Personality
Giratina, being one of the most enigmatic and intricate Pokémon, possesses a nature and appearance that instills both a sense of malevolence and dread. Despite the overwhelming fear it evokes, it surprisingly harbors a merciful side towards creatures deemed less wicked. An exemplary demonstration of this benevolence is evident in its willingness to grant players unrestricted access to the distortion world, even in the event of their defeat, and disregarding any interference caused by the notorious Team Galactic.
In the eleventh installment of the Pokémon movie series, Giratina became infuriated with Dialga and Palkia due to their reckless battle that resulted in the contamination of its sacred dwelling. This intense clash between the legendary Pokémon caused severe distortions in both time and space, causing great concern and turmoil. However, the turbulent encounters between Giratina and Dialga persisted in the twelfth movie, as the former sought revenge for the desecration of its sanctuary. Thankfully, through the intervention of Ash and Sheena, a profound sense of tranquility was eventually instilled within Giratina, leading to a resolution and cessation of its attacks on Dialga.
Biography
Past
Giratina holds a unique position as one of the earliest entities in the vast cosmos, alongside the esteemed Creation Trio and Mew. These revered beings were brought into existence by the almighty Arceus, and Giratina, alongside its fellow counterparts Palkia and Dialga, symbolizes the very essence of a crucial force in the universe known as Antimatter. However, as time progressed, Giratina's temperament took a turn for the worse, becoming increasingly aggressive and dissatisfied with the workings of the cosmos. This unsettling transformation caused Arceus to fear the potential harm Giratina could inflict upon the harmony of the universe. Consequently, Arceus made the decision to banish this spectral dragon to an alternate dimension, known as the Distortion World, in order to protect the cosmos from its destructive power.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus
After being banished, Giratina crossed paths with Volo at a later point in time. It had a vengeance-driven scheme against Arceus and decided to bestow upon Volo the Spooky Plate as part of its plan. Giratina had initiated the creation of space-time rifts, which ultimately led to Dialga and Palkia losing their sanity. This was a strategic move by Giratina to entice Arceus into revealing itself from its concealed location.
Giratina makes its initial appearance in the post-game phase of the game, specifically in the mission titled "Seeking the Remaining Plates." This critical encounter takes place when the player confronts Volo, who unexpectedly divulges his nefarious plans of seeking out Arceus in order to bring about the destruction of the world and subsequently reshape it according to his own desires. Following Volo's defeat, an eerie sensation fills the air, alerting everyone present to the impending arrival of an otherworldly entity. Suddenly, Giratina emerges from a mysterious portal, obediently following Volo's command to attack the player. Initially, Giratina takes on its Altered Form, but as the battle progresses and its vitality diminishes, it undergoes a transformation into its powerful Origin Form. Only when the player successfully manages to overcome both of Giratina's formidable forms does the legendary creature retreat back into the enigmatic depths of the Distortion World.
Once the player emerges victorious in their battle against Giratina, a legendary Pokémon, they are rewarded with an exciting new quest called "On the Trail of Giratina." This intriguing request is given to them by none other than Professor Laventon, a renowned Pokémon researcher. The professor informs the player about a mysterious shadow that has been spotted in the enchanting and enigmatic Cobalt Coastlands. As the player reflects on their journey and the impact they have had on Giratina, they cannot help but feel a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Their efforts have not only contributed to their own growth as a Pokémon Trainer but have also influenced the behavior and well-being of a legendary creature. With this newfound knowledge, the player eagerly looks forward to their future adventures, knowing that they possess the power to make a positive difference in the Pokémon world. Eager to uncover the truth behind this shadowy presence, the player embarks on a thrilling adventure. They traverse through treacherous paths and navigate through the awe-inspiring Spring Path, a captivating location teeming with natural beauty. As they venture deeper into the depths of the cave within the Spring Path, they come face to face with Giratina once again, but this time in its awe-inspiring Origin Form. With the Griseous Core in their possession, the player returns to Professor Laventon, eager to share their triumph and seek further guidance. The professor, impressed by the player's bravery and determination, commends them on their accomplishment. However, he also notes a significant change in Giratina's demeanor since its capture. The once-fiery rage that consumed the legendary Pokémon has subsided, giving way to a newfound sense of tranquility and peace. The player's heart races with anticipation as they engage in an epic battle with Giratina, utilizing their strategic skills and powerful Pokémon to overcome this formidable opponent. Finally, after an intense showdown, the player emerges victorious, capturing Giratina and claiming the ultimate prize: the Griseous Core. This remarkable item allows the player to alter Giratina's form, unlocking its true potential and unleashing its incredible powers.
Power and Abilities
Similar to certain Pokémon, this specific Pokémon possesses a distinctive move known as Shadow Force, which has the exceptional ability to strike its opponent successfully, even if the foe has utilized protective moves such as Protect or Detect beforehand. When assuming its Origin Forme, it maintains its extraordinary amount of HP, just like any other Pokémon that transforms into alternate forms, and its focus shifts towards offensive moves while diminishing its emphasis on defensive maneuvers. Furthermore, its Origin Forme results in a swap between its Attack and Defense statistics, rendering it a formidable force to be reckoned with. As a result, this Pokémon becomes an immensely potent creature that can effectively utilize these advantages to cater to its trainer's preference for a more offensive approach.
The Pokémon will undergo a transformation into its Origin Forme if it is in the Distortion World or if it is equipped with the Griseous Orb.

Giratina and the Sky Warrior
In a stroke of cunning, Giratina devises a plan to exact revenge upon Dialga. It lures Dialga into the Reverse World, hoping to trap it within its realm. However, fate has other plans, as Dialga manages to escape the clutches of Giratina, thanks to the timely intervention of Shaymin's Seed Flare. The powerful burst of energy creates an opening, a hole, through which Dialga slips away, leaving Giratina behind. Not one to be easily defeated, Giratina, with its mobility to the real world severely hindered, concocts a new scheme. It becomes fixated on capturing Shaymin, for it has discovered that the creature possesses the ability to unleash a potent Seed Flare, capable of shattering Dialga's time loop. Giratina yearns to utilize this power to create its own path back to the real world, thereby breaking free from the confines of Dialga's time manipulation. Giratina, the sole inhabitant of the Reverse World, finds itself in a unique predicament. This peculiar habitat of Giratina has become a receptacle for all the pollution that resulted from the epic battle between Dialga and Palkia in The Rise of Darkrai. Consequently, Giratina has developed a deep-rooted animosity towards Dialga and Palkia, viewing them as its archenemies. Thus, the story of Giratina's quest for vengeance and liberation unfolds, as it navigates through treacherous obstacles and encounters various challenges in its relentless pursuit of Shaymin and the elusive opportunity to escape the Reverse World.
With renewed strength and determination, Giratina, accompanied by the valiant Ash and Shaymin, embarks on a courageous mission to defeat Zero and save the Reverse World from his tyrannical grasp. Through their unwavering teamwork and indomitable spirit, they manage to thwart Zero's nefarious plans and restore peace to the once-troubled realm. In a thrilling turn of events, Zero manages to capture Giratina, an awe-inspiring Pokémon that had recently regained the ability to traverse between dimensions and venture into the real world. Zero's sinister plan involves harnessing Giratina's extraordinary powers to dominate the enigmatic Reverse World. Against all odds, Zero succeeds in extracting Giratina's remarkable ability to navigate through different dimensions. However, this extraction takes a toll on Giratina, pushing it perilously close to the brink of death. Just when all hope seems lost, Shaymin, a benevolent Pokémon known for its healing abilities, comes to the rescue. Utilizing its mystical Aromatherapy, Shaymin miraculously restores Giratina's vitality, offering a glimmer of hope in this dire situation. Having successfully vanquished their adversary, Giratina, filled with gratitude, bids farewell to Ash and Shaymin as it returns to the Reverse World. However, curiosity still lingers within Giratina's heart, compelling it to revisit the Reverse World in search of its elusive counterpart, Dialga, further fueling its adventurous spirit.
Arceus and the Jewel of Life
In a moment of utmost peril, Dialga valiantly intervened to rescue both Pikachu and Piplup from the clutches of a dangerous spatial rift that unexpectedly materialized within the tranquil waters of a flowing river. However, the tumultuous events did not end there, as Giratina, consumed by an unyielding fury stemming from the devastation inflicted upon its own realm, stormed into the peaceful confines of Michina Town without delay, seeking retribution. Dialga, now facing an enraged adversary, found itself engaged in a fierce battle for survival. Regrettably, Sheena, a gifted individual with the power to connect with the hearts of Pokémon, discovered her abilities to be futile in penetrating Giratina's impenetrable rage-driven exterior.
Ash begged Giratina to cease its attack, and upon realizing that Ash was the very individual who had previously assisted in preserving its existence, the rebellious Giratina halted its assault and retreated back to its own realm. Subsequently, Giratina united with Dialga and Palkia, combining their forces to safeguard the lives of all beings present when the omnipotent Arceus manifested in Michina with the intent of obliterating everything in its path.
After sustaining an injury, Giratina found solace in the fact that Arceus, the divine entity, came to its aid and restored its health. This miraculous intervention occurred after a significant alteration in the timeline, which ultimately allowed Giratina to return to its rightful dwelling in the Reverse World, where it could thrive and enjoy a harmonious existence once again.
Trivia
- Giratina's Altered Form possesses a distinct physical appearance, characterized by the presence of six legs, six ribs, and six spikes adorning its wings. It is noteworthy to mention that these numerical attributes align with the infamous 666, often referred to as the "Number of the Beast," thereby drawing parallels between Giratina and Satan. Moreover, the similarities extend beyond mere aesthetics, as Giratina's cosmic role mirrors that of Satan. Just as Satan is perceived as a divine being who was banished due to his aggressive inclinations, Giratina too is a literal deity that was exiled for its relentless pursuit of balance, an attribute that seems to have clashed with the intentions of the mythical entity known as Arceus.
- Giratina holds the impressive title of being the 487th Pokémon listed in the esteemed National Pokédex, a comprehensive catalogue that documents and categorizes the vast array of extraordinary creatures that inhabit the Pokémon universe.
- The weight of Altered Form Giratina, a Ghost-type Pokémon, measures a whopping 1,653.5 lbs, making it the heaviest of its kind. On the other hand, when it comes to height, Origin Form Giratina takes the crown as the tallest Ghost-type Pokémon, standing tall at an impressive 22 feet and 8 inches.
