~ Giro
Bring it back to me alive so I can kill it myself.
~ Giro

Giro is a wolf and the main antagonist of Arashi no Yoru ni ( ENG: One Stormy Night ), which is both a movie and a book series. He is the leader of a pack of wolves that hunts and antagonizes a herd of goats, the same herd that the movie's protagonist Mei resides in.

He is voiced by Japanese actor Riki Takeuchi, who also provided the Japanese dub of Proximus Ceasar from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Immortan Joe from Mad Mad: Fury Road.

Overview[]

Characteristics[]

Giro is a large and powerful wolf with pale yellow eyes. He has black fur, the darkest in all his pack, and a deep, raspy voice. In his younger days, he lost an ear and eye whilst hunting Mei's mother; these injuries distinguish him from the rest of the wolves. His paws and snout have a lighter color and his coat itself is very shaggy.

As a wolf, Giro is neccesarily murderous, willing to tresspass and kill in order to provide food for himself and his pack. He believes Wolves and Goats are natural enemies and is intolerant of any fellow wolf who does not hold this view. Even his friendship with Gabu's father, Garuru, does not save the wolf from Giro's wrath when his friendship with Mei is discovered. Giro is an effective, if stern, leader and he is respected and readily obeyed by all the other wolves. Even Gabu, his adopted son, doesn't flaunt his rules openly.

Biography[]

Giro was presumably born into and grew up in the Bakubaku Valley. He was best friends with Garuru, Gabu's father, and followed him whilst he led the Wolf Pack. Garuru disappeared for an unknown reason and when he did, both leadership of the pack and the responsbility of raising his son, Gabu, fell to Giro. This the new pack leader does, despite Gabu's various oddities. Some time before or after taking over the pack, he led a hunt in the Sawasawa Mountains and targeted Mei's mother. While the hunt was sucessful, it did cause him his ear and his eye, as Mei's mother ripped off the former and destroyed the latter with her horn.

Years later, when Gabu and Mei are both adults, Giro is firmly and absolutely the Pack's leader. With Winter coming soon, he informs the pack of the importance of finding and storing food and organizes a hunt on Crumbling Hills. Unbeknowst to him, Mei and Gabu have planned their second meet-up a this very location. He nearly finds Mei, but the mist in the area makes spotting him difficult and Gabu redirects him with promises of "plump-juicy" goats elsewhere. Though the wolves do not notice Mei and Gabu hiding and associating, one of Mei's herdmate -- and older doe -- does and reports on it to the rest of the goats.

Meanwhile, Giro admonishes the pack and Gabu specifically for not being in his assigned role. When Gabu is not present, he orders the other wolves to find him, as hunting alone is against the laws of the pack. When he is caught and tried for helping a goat, Giro has Gabu secured in a cave at Valley's Bottom until his punishment can be officially decided. In accordance with code of wolves, Gabu is supposed to face death, but since his late father was Giro's friend, Giro decides to bend the laws and give him a chance to atone. He orders Gabu to meet with Mei once more and continue to be friendly, but to wring him for information about the goat herd so that the wolves may hunt them more easily.

However, Gabu uses the chance Giro gives him to escape with Mei after finding out that he, too, was exiled from his herd. The pair decide to live in the Emerald Forest and Giro, unwilling to let Gabu escape punishment and regretting going "easy" on him, tails the two with his pack. Giro is able to keep pace with them, even as winter falls, and eventually battles Gabu himself as the wolf tries to by Mei time to escape for good. Giro is the better fighter by far, but the commotion triggers an avalanche and the disaster seperates the warring parties permanently.

Relationships[]

Gabu[]

Gabu was Giro's adoptive son, though turned in an enemy when he chose the friendship of a goat named Mei over pack loyalties. Because Gabu was the son of Giro's best friend, he gave Gabu some minor preferntial treatment-- but only up until a point.

Barry[]

Barry is a brown-furred wolf with a shock of red hair. He functions as a second-in-command to Giro.

Garuru[]

Garuru was Giro's late friend and previous pack alpha Giro was his second in command, though he disappeared during a dispute with a rival pack. This led Giro to adopt Gabu and raise him alongside Gabu's mother.
