The Githyanki are an hostile race of humanoids from the Astral Plane in Dungeons & Dragons. They are the evil counterpart to the Githzerai.
They are dimension travelling pirates with psychic powers who often raid the Prime Material Plane (the world of Toril) and are a common sight in the city of Sigil.
History[]
Both the Githyanki and the Githzerai used to be one Gith race that was enslaved eons ago by the Mind Flayers and they were used as cannon fodder soldiers, test subjects for cruel experiments and those who outlived their usefulness had their brains eaten by their Illithid masters.
One day, a female warrior with psionic abilities named Gith, taught her psychic techniques to her fellow slaves to resist the Mind Flayer's powers and led a big revolt that eventually toppled the Illithid empire and the Giths were finally free.
Gith, however, was not satisfied and she called for a campaign of extermination of all Mind Flayers in the multiverse, as well as sacking all the humanoid races that could be a threat to the Gith race.
A pacifist sage called Zerthimon led a splinter faction that opposed Gith's warmongering, arguing that they should focus on building a new society and live in peaceful isolation. Soon Zerthimon and his people were forced to engage Gith's faction in a civil war.
At the end of the war, Zerthimon was killed and the Githyanki moved to the Astral Plane while Zerthimon's people, the Githzerai, retreated to the chaotic neutral plane of Limbo. The two splintered races pursued their different philosophies and lifestyles while holding a deep grudge against each other.
Since then, the Githyanki became a recurring threat with their acts of piracy and terrorism against the people of other dimensions.
