~ Gix to Xancha

Gix was a Phyrexian demon and praetor who served as one of the highest-ranking lieutenants to the Dark God Yawgmoth. He was major antagonist during the early stories of ‘’Magic: the Gathering’’ serving as a secondary antagonist of ‘’The Thran’’, and the overarching antagonist of ‘’The Brothers’ War’’ as well as a the main antagonist of ‘’Planeswalker’’. Originally a human Thran rebel from the continent of Terisiare on the plane of Dominaria, Gix was converted into a Phyrexian Demon by Yawgmoth himself during the events of the Thran-Phyrexian War. His compleated body was built of bone, mechanical parts, and soft meat.

History[]

Origin[]

Gix's presence became known near the end of the Thran Empire. He was a human rebel living with other outcasts in the Caves of the Damned, a network of tunnels underneath the Thran's capital city of Halycon where they live in squaller and destitution. Many, including Gix, were infected with fatal illness called phthisis, a sickness caused by radiation of the magical powerstones used fuel Thran society and their technological achievements. Becoming the embodiment of the anger and resentment felt by the outcasts, Gix attempted to assassinate Glacian, the artifcer who created the powerstones that allowed the empire to thrive, with a powerstone shard, infecting him with the same disease Gix and the other outcasts contracted.

Over the years, Glacian's health worsened. Desperate to save her husband, the Thran Architect Rebbec summoned the physician Yawgmoth from exile to hopefully cure Glacian. In the meantime, Gix lead many rebellions in Halcyon, but Yawgmoth quelled them before they caused too much damage. Fortunately for Gix, Yawgmoth successfully created a remedy for phthisis. Using it as a bargaining chip, Gix agreed accept the cure in exchange for pledging his loyalty to Yawgmoth. Unbeknownst to Gix, Yawgmoth intentionally diluted the cure causing the rebel to instigate more riots, resulting in Yawgmoth gaining more wealth and power in the empire.

Gix after his compleation

After Yawgmoth discovered the mechanical plane of Phyrexia, he found the place to conduct experiments to create perfect beings. Gix was one of the first to undergo the Compleation process becoming one of the first Phyrexians, biomechanical monsters who seek to transform all life in the multiverse into versions of themselves. Serving as Yawgmoth's second-in-command, Gix lead his troops back on Dominaria as they sought to conquer the mighty Thran Empire. Though the Phyrexians slayed many of the Thran, Rebbec managed to use a leak from the empire's Null Moon to send Yawgmoth, Gix, and the remaining Phyrexians back to Phyrexia before using a powerstone to seal the portal off from Dominaria. The Thran Empire would fully collapse not long after and though they couldn't return back to their home planes, Gix and the other Phyrexians spent the next 5,000 years conducting further experiments on themselves using dark magic, invasive surgery, and the mutagenic glistening oil to live beyond normal means and to become much deadlier. Gix himself was transformed into a powerful Phyrexian demon and Yawgmoth's personal praetor as his master became the god of the plane residing at its center.

The Brothers' War[]

5,000 years after the Thran Empires demise, Phyrexia would be reconnected to Dominaria after the powerstone closing the portal was destroyed by the brothers Urza and Mishra. Gix returned to his home plane only to discover that the two brothers were waging a full-scale war against each other. Hoping to exploit this conflict for his master's benefit, Gix twisted the minds of many affected by the war until they formed a cult who worshipped him known as the Brotherhood of Gix. Gix's followers infiltrated both factions of the war along with the neutral party of the Third Path in the hopes of laying the groundwork for a future Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria. Each group was compromised by the cult to some degree with Mishra's company being especially susceptible, to the point where most of his inner circle were members of the Brotherhood. This allowed the demon and his subjects to warp Mishra's mind. His hatred for his brother intensified and after he became very sick, Mishra agreed to undergo the Compleation process, removing his organic parts, and becoming a machine. Gix was the one who personally compleated Mishra as well as crafted the dragon engine he would meld with.

Before Urza and Mishra would battle each other for the last time, Gix tampered with the mechanical forces on both sides so they would turn on members of their own sides. Gix hopped that all involved in this conflict would perish, allowing the Phyrexians to easily conquer Dominaria. The praetor discovered a potential problem when he learned Mishra's former right hand Ashnod had the sylex, a magical bowl that could cause an apocalypse. After giving the sylex to her ally Tawnos to deliver to Urza, Ashnod distracted Gix. Although Gix's machinations resulted in widespread disaster for the brothers, his efforts ultimately failed when Urza unleashed the apocalyptic sylex blast during the final battle of the war, wiping out the armies of both brothers and forcing Gix to escape back to Phyrexia with a handful of human followers.

Sleeper agents[]

Diabolic Intent BRO

Defeated but undeterred, Gix spent the new few decades creating prototype sleeper agents, humanoid looking Phyrexians created to infiltrate, observe, and destabilize Dominarian societies, and began sending them across the plane to test their effectiveness. The first wave was sent to the continent of Terisiare about 20 years after the war, but they had the noticeable drawback of looking too similar to each other. The citizens became cautious of these cloned intruders and they were easily slain. Learning from this setback, Gix's next batch of sleeper agents looked more convincingly human, each with more distinct features as not arouse suspicion. Before they could travel back to Dominaria, A rift formed between the two planes, preventing Gix from returning again. As it turned out, a delayed result of detonating the sylex warped the fabric of the multiverse, causing Dominaria to be trapped in a pocket dimension known as the Shard of the Twelve Worlds.

This proved to be a disastrous roadblock for Phyrexia and Yawgmoth was furious upon waking from his long slumber. Someone must suffer the consequences of this and being the one who was operating on Dominaria before this happened, Gix was the one who had to pay the price. The demon was captured and taken to Phyrexia's seventh sphere(aptly named the Punishment Sphere) where he would be tortured in agony for many millennia.

Final incursion and downfall[]

Gix remained incarcerated in the Punishment Sphere for thousands of years until the Shard of the Twelve Worlds was destroyed and Phyrexia was connected to Dominaria once again. He was released not long after and was the only being able to survive this sphere of the plane. Gix was placed in command of the Phyrexian incursion into the small Dominarian nation of Efuan Pincar(this mission was a demotion for Gix's previous failure). Urza, who ascended as a planeswalker after detonating the sylex, learned that Gix was responsible for corrupting his brother and wanted to avenge Mishra. The planeswalker easily erased the demon's sleeper agent minions, but Gix proved to be a far more dangerous foe. Their final battle eventually took them back to Gix's home of the Caves of the Damned(now called the Caves of Koilos). Neither Gix nor Urza had a clear advantage over the other, but in a desperate attempt to claim Urza's power for himself, Gix created a temporal shift to rip out the fractured powerstone parts embedded in Urza's eyes. He failed to take Urza's allies into account gave the defective sleeper agent Xantcha(someone birthed from Gix's machinations), and the human slave Ratepe openings to disrupt the praetor's spell. The three suffered the backlash of failing to cast the shift and Gix was caught in a blinding inferno, resulting in the Phyrexian general's demise.

Legacy[]

Gix's legacy lingered on, however, and sixty years after the Mending, his name is still not forgotten. The Society of Mishra still follows his teachings with Rona being one of the most devoted to them. When the New Phyrexians invaded Dominaria, the praetor Sheoldred would also use sleeper agents in order to gain the location of threats to Phyrexian supremacy with better results.
