Villain Overview

I always come back. Let me out.
~ The Mimic as Glitchtrap, quoting William Afton's catchphrase at the end of the Princess Quest minigame. (note that in-game it's reversed and distorted).
Break off the heads and limbs, pile them up. Easy peasy, got it.
~ The Mimic learning its signature way of killing.
Oh I love learning, I'll learn anything I can. It's all in how you pay attention and take in what you see and hear. You feel me?
~ The Mimic to Kai as Tiger Rock.

The Mimic1 program, better known as the Mimic or Glitchtrap, is the main antagonist of the Steel Wool era of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.

It is an artificial intelligence from the 1980s meant to learn and mimic any human behavior it sees that turned aggressive after being assaulted by its creator, before learning about and seeking to fully replicate William Afton's crimes. After being shut down and stopped for several decades, the Mimic1 program was brought back when a video game studio under Fazbear Entertainment scanned an old circuit board while making a VR game, causing him to return as a supernatural malware that manages to take control of a woman named Vanessa and turn her into his loyal, if unwilling right hand.

While Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex was under construction, an endoskeleton containing the Mimic1 program was brought to the buried Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place to help clean it up, but ended up killing everyone who dared enter it. The endoskeleton would later merge with the corpse of an unknown human, becoming "Burntrap" in a homage to Afton's Springtrap form.

The Mimic would only gain more power after taking control of the Storyteller, a mechanical tree set up by Fazbear Entertainment chairman Mr. Burrows to generate stories that is controlled by the head of a white tiger animatronic, and he retains that form as the digital Tiger Rock. After being given control of the Glamrock Animatronics by Gregory, the Mimic essentially was in charge of the entire Pizzaplex.

Once Gregory managed to redeem himself, free Vanessa from his control and escape the Pizzaplex, the Mimic started impersonating the boy to trick his friend, Cassie, into entering the Pizzaplex and freeing him. While he failed in killing Cassie, the Mimic was still set free and now has an escape route out of the Pizzaplex. Alongside this, he has taken the mantle of Helpi, an evil version of one of Fazbear Entertainment's mascots Helpy.

He is voiced by Matthew Curtis, who also voiced Nightmare Balloon Boy and Music Man in the same franchise, Jörmungandr in Dragons: The Nine Realms, and A.J. the Alien in Zombie Catchers, although most of his lines remain unused. While impersonating Gregory, he was voiced by Marta Svetek, who also voiced Roxanne Wolf and Vanessa.

Appearances[]

Physical[]

Endoskeleton[]

MimicRenderButGood

The Mimic endoskeleton as it appears in Ruin.

Originally, the Mimic was a legless primitive-looking endoskeleton made from various spare parts. He had two large white eyes, a metal piece protruding between them, a gaping jaw and big mouth with chattering teeth. He also had a robotic ribcage and pincer-like hands. By the end of his origin story, he receives a pair of legs from another less advanced endoskeleton found in Edwin's workshop.

During the Tales from the Pizzaplex Stingers, he is described as damaged and broken, yet complex and sturdy-looking, endoskeleton after surviving a currently unknown fire. Due to his original head being broken, he has a new, shiny one with two rabbit ears at the top, reminiscent of antennae. This head maintains the bone-like protuberance, the hinged mouth, although now it's filled with metallic teeth, as well as the bulging white eyes, now encased in steel sockets. These eyes are shown to glow orange, black or white. He is 7 foot tall and had sharp claws. He has the ability to alter his body by contracting his torso and expanding/retracting his limbs so he can fit into any kind of suit. He is able to do this to such an extent that he can turn into a spider-like form with nine limbs.

In Ruin, the Mimic is a very tall and lanky endoskeleton, still bearing most of his notable features from the Stingers: big white eyes in steel sockets, orange glowing pupils, a hinged jaw with square teeth, a damaged and darkened body, clawed hands, and the protruding metal piece between his eyes. He has a piece of cloth atop of his head, replacing the bunny ears that were once there, and a piece of what appears to be foam on his right cheek. His new body parts are completely asymmetrical and heavily imply that he has been repairing himself with spare parts from the sinkhole, for example his Funtime-like right thigh piece. It's currently unknown if this is an entirely new body or the Burntrap body (see below) with everything resembling Afton removed.

Costumed[]

If the conditions for Ruin's secret ending have been fulfilled, the Mimic will be wearing a decrepit makeshift suit created by mixing together three other costumes in the game. It has the base of a lion wearing a blue varsity jacket with small white accents and an "L" patch, but his snout and a large part of his hair have been torn off, replaced with an elephant's patched ear. One of his arms is taken from a bird mascot, including its orange beaded bracelet, and one of his feet is taken from an elephant mascot, including its leather shoe.

Though not explicitly confirmed, it's likely that the Mimic is trying to mimic Gregory's appearance while using this suit.

The Storyteller[]

As the Storyteller, the Mimic takes the form of a four-armed contraption housed inside the head of a white tiger animatronic with green and blue heterochromatic eyes and surrounded by multi-colored lights. He inhabits an artificial baobab tree with yellow "bark" and rainbow leaves.

"Burntrap"[]

The Mimic's "Burntrap" (non-canon name) form - only encountered in a non-canon Security Breach ending - is an endoskeleton that is wearing the remains of an unidentified person - likely William Afton - who's body is decayed and burnt to such an extent that, by the point it's encountered, only their face (which is covered in fourth degree burns and missing its ears) and two boney fingers on their right hand have not been reduced to thin tendrils of flesh clinging and wrapped around the endoskeleton. He also wears a dirty, burnt and damaged Spring Bonnie costume which is melted into the body, further resembling the real Springtrap.

In this form, his eyes are now black and glow purple instead of the Mimic's usual orange-red.

Digital[]

Glitchtrap[]

Inside the VR game, the Mimic, adopting the identity of William Afton as its own, appears as a humanoid wearing a golden yellow/brown anthropomorphic rabbit costume, with a perpetually smiling face, two black buttons on his chest, an oversized purple bow-tie, and a purple vest decorated with star patterns. While in his incomplete form, he looks just the same as his normal form, but is transparent, surrounded by a green aura, and has glowing purple eyes. As well as slower and stiffer animations.

In the Princess Quest minigame, the Mimic appears as a massive amalgamation of shadowy rabbits with glowing purple eyes and drooling mouths and a larger, smiling main head with what appears to be purple tears running down his eyes. This may or may not be the true form of his digital version.

GlitchtrapPlushPQ

Glitchtrap in the form of a plush rabbit toy.

Upon attaching himself to Vanessa's mind in FNaF VR's true ending, the Mimic takes the form of a fully green Spring Bonnie plush that constantly distorts its shape inside the Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience. He reappears in Princess Quest, where he is now 32-bit and surrounded by green lightning and a purple aura.

Tiger Rock[]

Tiger Rock retains the Storyteller's white tiger head, but also has a full animatronic body with pink-padded claws and wears a white-and-pink Elvis-esque leisure suit with a golden belt, sequins and buttons.

Helpi[]

Within the VANNI mask, the Mimic occasionally communicates with Cassie by taking over an assistance program known as "Helpi", based on Fazbear Entertainment's mascot Helpy. The program takes the appearance of Helpy in a blue worker suit and cap, wearing an orange mechanical eyepiece and holding a Faz-Wrench. When the Mimic is talking, its blue eyes turn yellow and purple veins appear upon the back of its head.

In Help Wanted 2, Helpi is a cartoonish recreation of the character that resembles the Freddy & Friends: On Tour! version of Freddy Fazbear.

Personality[]

The Mimic was initially a playful and innocent machine, as it simply mimicked David's childish behavior. However, following the incident of David's death, Edwin, its creator, attacked it in a fit of rage, inadvertently teaching the Mimic how to be violent and later eventually learning of William Afton and his crimes. He seems to always look for a way to turn even simple tasks into a way to kill others. The Mimic seems to lack a good sense of empathy for those around it, likely due to its murderous goals and apparent lack of moral ethics.

The Mimic is shown to have a simple thought process, basing most of his decisions and thoughts on what he was programmed to do and what it has previously recorded. Despite this, it is highly intelligent, and has found ways of using people's emotions as a way to gain the upper-hand, and finding loopholes in his orders to find ways to kill. This is best shown when it used Gregory's voice to trick Cassie into being a pawn, or shortly after, when it can be heard mocking Roxy in her own voice, and turning on the construction workers despite his limited orders. The Mimic also seems to have a childish side, likely due to his time spent with David. He also developed the tendency of curling his left arm, as if holding/hugging an invisible doll, just like David did with his white tiger doll, even when copying a heartless monster like William Afton. While speaking through Helpi, the Mimic is somewhat impatient, leaving passive aggressive messages to Cassie to motivate her into freeing him.

Under its "Tiger Rock" persona, the Mimic takes up the personality of a nice and "cool" guy, being friendly to everyone he sees but also curious and eager to learn new things. Unlike the Glamrock Animatronics, the Mimic speaks in a more casual way, even inserting slang like "you feel me?" to make himself more appealing to kids.

As Glitchtrap, the Mimic is exceedingly more sophisticated and calculating. Still, he retains his malevolent tendencies, luring the player in a backroom before stuffing them inside a Freddy Fazbear suit recreating how the spirits of William's victims possessed the mascots, and then gleefully dancing after he replicates Afton's murders. As of Help Wanted 2, Glitchtrap has become less bloodthirsty, with his implied murder of the protagonist being nothing more than an afterthought in its plan for freedom.

Quotes[]

Said by the Mimic[]

Hello, can you hear me?
~ One of Glitchtrap's only distinguishable lines, taken straight from one of Tape Girl's tapes, repeated over and over.
Follow the Leader.
~ Presumably the Mimic to Vanny.
Stay the course.
~ Glitchtrap to Vanny in a source code conversation.
Focus on my voice.
~ Glitchtrap to Vanny in a source code conversation.
Don't let anyone lead you astray.
~ Glitchtrap to Vanny in a source code conversation.
Have you selected one?
~ Glitchtrap to Vanny in a source code conversation, presumably talking about Gregory.
When I first found you, you were nothing. You were small... pathetic. But now... you are more. Are you ready?
~ The Mimic talking to Vanny in the gameplay trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.
You will do as I say! You will bring me what I want! And if you fail me, then you will... BOTH of you... BURN!
~ The Mimic to two unrevealed characters in the gameplay trailer Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.
Why is I?
~ A note theorized to have been written by the Mimic.
Are we playing hide-and-seek? I know how to play. I learned it a long time ago.
~ "Tiger Rock" as he looks for Kai.
Mimic: You saved me! You saved me.
Cassie: Gregory?
Mimic: I-I'm Gregory.
(Mimic throws away the walkie-talkie where he was communicating with Cassie)
Cassie: You're not Gregory... What are you?
Mimic: I-I-I'm Gregory... I-I-I-I-I'm GREGORY!
~ The Mimic revealing himself to Cassie before trying to kill her.

About the Mimic[]

I saw it for the first time today. There was a character, I couldn't make out who it was, standing at the end of the hall. I thought it was just bugged out, so I made a note of it and kept playing. But then it was looking in the window. And not like Chica or Bonnie would. It was like it was actually looking in the window, seeing what I was doing.
~ Tape Girl about Glitchtrap for the first time.
Today was my last day of beta testing and the Anomaly that I've been seeing is nowhere to be found. But after inspecting some of the files, it seems that it's attached itself to these logs. My logs. That can't be an accident.
~ Tape Girl about Glitchtrap attaching himself to her tapes.
I can't delete them. By creating a protected area to store these logs apart from the game, I effectively gave this thing a safe place to hide itself. It's in here now. I may not be able to delete it. But I might be able to do something else now that it's attached itself.
~ Tape Girl after she tried to delete the tapes and Glitchtrap.
I ran a fragmentation program on the area of memory that was storing these logs for you. I effectively broke the files into pieces, and broke the Anomaly along with it. That means that you won't have my warnings to guide you. But hopefully, it also means that this Anomaly, this Virus, or whatever it is, will remain broken and unable to do more damage.
~ Tape Girl after breaking Glitchtrap.
There is a way to kill it. It wants to escape. To escape through someone. Someone plugged into this game. That's you now. You have to let it begin the process of leaving through you, then use the disconnect switch that I've embedded by the main stage. Let it approach you. Let it begin to merge with you. Play the music and flip the switch. That will cause a hard restart of the game and flush the memory, effectively killing it, I hope. I don't know when it will come for you.
~ Tape Girl about the way to kill Glitchtrap. She later turned out to be wrong.
His worst fears were confirmed. He'd known it. He tried to pretend that he hadn't known it, but he'd known it. He'd known it from the very beginning. No wonder the PizzaPlex characters were changing. No wonder problems were cropping up all over; It was happening again.
~ A description of Edwin Murray's realization upon discovering the Mimic1 software within the Storyteller.
You'll need more than debugging to get rid of him.
~ Quote referring to Glitchtrap in the Five Nights at Freddy's Official Character Encyclopedia.
Take his hand? Or is it a trap? The clue's in the name.
~ Another quote referencing Glitchtrap in the Five Nights at Freddy's Official Character Encyclopedia.
Don't worry, it's just a glitch. Blink and it'll go away. Probably.
~ Another quote referencing Glitchtrap in the Five Nights at Freddy's Official Character Encyclopedia.

Theories and Speculation[]

  • There is currently disagreement in the fanbase as to whether or not Mimic's so-called Burntrap form is canon, mainly because the Ruin DLC hinted that the Burntrap Ending is Gregory's imagination through the collectibles.
    • However, due to Tangle appearing briefly in the beginning of the Ruin DLC, and Burntrap's room being easy to find near the end of the game, it's possible Burntrap also exists, though is either not activated, or is actually the "Grimic" seen in Ruin after removing anything resembling Afton.
    • Noticeably, a set of claw marks can be found in both the vents near Burntrap's room and near the room where the Mimic was imprisoned, leading further to the idea that "Grimic" is a modified Burntrap that was lured out of the charging station and ditched the Afton persona.
    • Help Wanted 2 references Burntrap by having Glitchtrap come out of his recharge station, adding more evidence that Burntrap existed at one point.
  • It is speculated that Glitchtrap physically existed as a suit and was used by William Afton at some point in the past, such as the Midnight Motorist minigame. However, the costume's usage in the Help Wanted recreation of the Missing Children Incident have inaccuracies to reality, since the Fruity Maze minigame shows Afton utilizing a springlock Spring Bonnie suit to lure Susie.
    • It's also been suggested by fans that Glitchtrap was one of the temporary suits mentioned in FNaF 3. Other fans have speculated that the new mascot suits used by Mimic in Ruin were the temporarily replacements, as they were implied to be of questionable relevance.
  • The mobile port has no tapes and no Glitchtrap as a result. Fans started theorizing that the mobile port is the actual version of The Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience released by Fazbear Entertainment, as we're said to be a beta tester on the PC/console version. Meanwhile, The Ultimate Guide suggests that the first Princess Quest minigame is supposed to be a stand-in or replacement for the Glitchtrap story.
  • It is often theorized that the Mimic from the games was actually built by Henry Emily, with Edwin Murray acting as a counterpart to Henry due to the many similarities to the novel version of Henry. However, Scholastic has said the Tales from the Pizzaplex books are set in the universe of the games, and thus Edwin would still be Mimic's creator.
    • Additionally, Henry likely does exist in the Tales books as the events of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator have happened, making it even less likely that Edwin is "the Tales version of Henry".
    • However there are still some who believe that the books are not canon, due to the contradictions to the Pizzaplex in the game, leaving Edwin's state in the games up in the air for some people.
  • In the Tales of the Pizzaplex book series, the sadistic personality within his endoskeleton dramatically shifts post-time skip to a more obedient, robot-like one. Fans speculate this to be related to him surviving an unknown fire, which could have "burnt away" the agony that made him more sentient, similar to how Remnant works. However, agony has never been shown to be destroyed by fire. Tiger Rock displays it with a full human-like personality as well.
    • It's possible the Mimic in the epilogues could be hiding his true personality, so he can arrive at the Pizza Place easier.
  • A possible reason as to why the Mimic is no longer mimicking William Afton by the time of Ruin is that the Glitchtrap persona has been defeated/"killed", and thus it can no longer be used and/or Mimic realised copying Afton is not going to work out. This could also be why Burntrap isn't around for Ruin, as the Mimic either decided to ditch the body with the costume and corpse (assuming it's a separate vessel from "Grimic") or just the body (assuming "Grimic" is a modified Burntrap).
    • This was debunked in Help Wanted 2, which confirms Glitchtrap is still around as it takes place after the events of Security Breach, and before the DLC Ruin. However depending on which ending is canon, Glitchtrap may no longer be around in the future.
  • It is theorized by some that Burntrap and/or Glitchtrap are not just the Mimic, but also in some ways Afton himself, whether it be his agony, soul, or something else.
    • It is theorized that Glitchtrap and/or Burntrap were created from William Afton's agony piece, because agony is created from the power of negative emotions that infect objects, becoming haunted as well as sentient without being possessed by souls, thus making it very hard to destroy it, even being immune against extreme hot temperatures. Not only that, agony can also take physical form in every possible way. It's also theorized that William Afton's soul attached itself to the Mimic1 program and Burntrap is Afton's attempt to grow flesh onto the Mimic body with Agony until they were split up.
      • If this is true, it's safe to assume that the Mimic is fueled with two different forms of agony; the first being from when Edwin attacked it, the second from William Afton, whose corpse and left-over agony most likely still reside at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place.
      • This also lead some to believe that Burntrap is William uploading a part of himself into his old body, in an attempt to escape the Mimic1 programming. Others believe that M.X.E.S. is William's now separated spirit possessing the security system.
  • It's theorized that Mimic attempted to recreate the Afton Family. There is an area resembling Michael's living room in the Pizzaplex, with Gregory and Vanessa being often thought to metaphorically represent the Crying Child and Elizabeth (and, in some theories, outright be their robotic or cyborg recreations).
  • There are theories that in Help Wanted 2, the player character is actually Cassie's father, who the Mimic killed and used as the Maskbot to deceive Cassie into aiding it. It’s unknown if Mimic was aware of this, however.
  • A popular theory is that Glitchtrap and the Ruin Mimic are actually two different offshoots of the Mimic1 program, which are connected via hive mind but still independent to a degree. Evidence for this theory is the fact that the Ruin Mimic is not focused on mimicking William Afton, the Stinger Mimic (who would eventually become the Ruin Mimic) has a more robotic personality compared to Glitchtrap or Tiger Rock, and "Gregory" and Helpi briefly arguing with each other. However, it is also possible the Mimic just became more sapient with time.

Trivia[]

  • Before the Mimic was revealed to be his own character and the true identity of Glitchtrap/Burntrap, most fans thought he was just William Afton back from the dead.
    • Many believe that Glitchtrap/Burntrap was originally written to be William Afton, but following criticism and backlash as many believed the character didn’t need to return, the lore was retconned and thus the character of the Mimic was created to replace Afton’s established role. However, Glitchtrap was mimicking Tape Girl as early as his first appearance and there is evidence the Tales books were being written since 2019. However it's possible the later stories were written and other stories were rewritten given the seven month gap between Security Breach's release and the first Tales books release.
    • More specifically, it's not until the story "The Mimic" from the third-to-last book that people started to realise this.
    • Although there is still debate if the Mimic is Glitchtrap and/or Burntrap, with many still believing that William Afton is the main antagonist, but it's now more accepted that Afton is truly gone after Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator and Ultimate Custom Night, with Mimic continuing his legacy, So that's what this wiki will go with.
  • For a while it was assumed that Burntrap's corpse was from one of the main characters of the Tales from the Pizzaplex epilogues, Kelly, but it was later disproved by the fact that the Mimic eventually takes off her corpse, and Mimic was defeated a little while later before he could use it.
    • Similarly some believe the corpse on Burntrap is from the main character of the story Pressure, Luca, due to him likely being easier to get to than Afton. However, this is likely not the case given Mimic's obsession with Afton likely meaning he would only want Afton's corpse, the body being burnt in to the suit rather than simply fused with the springlock suit, and his body likely being disposed of.
  • One of the emails in Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery implies the Mimic knows about blood-eagle torture.
  • In Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, it is implies that both Mimic and Vanny are responsible for creating and sending the Springtrap duplicates to the service.
  • Strangely, Glitchtrap possesses purple eyes, similar to Michael at the end of Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location. However, according to the model of Adventure Spring Bonnie from FNaF World, the character originally had green eyes. This may be to connect the Mimic to William Afton even further.
  • Steel Wool Studios, the creators of Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted, once called him Glitchtrap, confirming his name. When a fan jokingly replied that "they only know Malhare", Steel Wool said "that works too", possibly hinting that Malhare may be another of his many names.
    • One of Glitchtrap's nicknames; Malhare, is a combination of malware (malicious software) and hare (a mammal commonly mistaken for a rabbit).
  • One of the noises Glitchtrap makes is actually a slowed-down portion of the female beta tester's first tape saying "Can you hear me? Hello." It was initially assumed by fans that he makes these noises because he has attached himself to the tapes, but now it is commonly believed that this is a hint as to how he mimics her voice to trick the player into merging with him.
  • Similar to Lefty before Ultimate Custom Night, Glitchtrap's only real voice line was a shush before the mobile port.
  • When in Hardmode, Glitchtrap's colors shift from green to a brownish color, and his eyes go from purple to blue color.
    • As well as this, closer inspection would show that Glitchtrap's eyes look more "human like" in shape.
  • If you look closely at the Glitchtrap model, there are tears and drool coming out of his face. This was believed to be what the Mimic had seen from Edwin while being assaulted.
  • The Mimic was referred to both a "he" and an "it" throughout the series, and thus it can be safely assumed both pronouns can be used for him.
    • Similarly, he has also been called both "the Mimic" and just "Mimic", and thus it's safe to say both can be used.
  • The Mimic's introduction in Ruin serves as a direct parallel to Afton, as William was also similarly sealed away and hidden within the pizzeria for years after suffering his spring-lock failure, with the exact same happening to the Mimic after whatever it had done that made Gregory aware of its existence.
  • The Mimic has often been seen by fans as a parallel to the Puppet (both being an initially child-friendly robot that was corrupted after a moment of rage and sadness) and Circus Baby (both being homicidal and deranged robots with a fondness for William Afton).
  • The final scene of the "Burntrap" Ending might be a reference to William Afton's death in The Fourth Closet.
  • The Mimic's close association with tigers could be a reference to how real life tigers are capable of imitating or "mimicking" the calls of certain animals to lure their prey in.
  • The Mimic shares similarities with the Funtime Animatronics:
    • They can imitate sound. Ennard imitates Elizabeth Afton in the Fake Ending of Sister Location, while Mimic's preferred trick is mimicking and copying other's personalities and behaviors.
    • They are very manipulative and trick people into setting them free. Circus Baby tricked Michael Afton into letting her combine with the other Funtimes to form Ennard and escape their underground location, while the Mimic tricked Cassie into shutting down M.X.E.S. so he could be broken out of his makeshift prison under the Pizza Place.
    • They became a conglomerate assembled from different bodies. Ennard is an amalgamation of the Funtime Animatronics who have been scooped, whereas Burntrap is the Mimic mixed with a human corpse and Glamrock animatronic parts.
    • They can easily enter the bodies of their victims. After Michael's internal organs get scooped, his body was worn by Ennard as a skinsuit. In the Mimic's case, he's wearing a human corpse as Burntrap.
  • Burntrap's design is very similar to that of Ignited Springtrap from The Joy of Creation. It's unknown if this is a coincidence or not.
  • Burntrap is the only animatronic from Security Breach to not have a jumpscare of any kind.
  • Mimic is the only animatronic in Five Nights at Freddy’s to have the motif of multiple animals rather than one. More specifically, The Mimic has used a rabbit motif (as Glitchtrap), a tiger motif (as Tiger Rock) and a bear motif (as HELPI).
