We are everywhere. No walls or boundaries will hold us back, no imperialist army will stand before us, until all are free.
~ The GLA supreme commander.

The Global Liberation Army is violent movement and rogue non-state actor serving as the main antagonists of Command & Conquer: Generals, as well as one of the three playable factions within the game. They are made up of various terrorist groups, revolutionaries, criminal organizations and other movements opposed to western imperialism united under one banner.

With their stated goal of opposition to the imperialism practiced by the United States of America and People's Republic of China, under the pretense of liberation the Global Liberation Army seeks to dominate the world. They are a vast, decentralized army not tied down to one nation state and controlled by a network of different leaders across the globe.

History[]

Formation[]

The Global Liberation Army arose from various impoverished third world countries in the Middle East and Central Asia, who had long suffered from being caught within the geopolitical conflicts between America and China. Taking advantage of this anti-imperialist sentiment, the GLA rose to power by declaring their opposition to aggression of both the U.S. and China, vastly growing in strength thanks to a nebulous network of wealthy donors financing it.

War against China[]

The GLA's first move was to enter China, where they garnered broad support for their secessionist ideals. After China refused to negotiate with the GLA, GLA forces raided a PLA military base in Yecheng and stole loads of ammunition before attacking a nuclear reactor and triggering a meltdown to cause chaos within the region. China then amped up its aggressive stance towards the GLA terrorists and began openly waging war against them. While the U.S. assisted them by providing surveillance, they refused to enter open combat with the GLA as the GLA had yet to attack American troops. The GLA later attacked a celebratory civilian parade and detonated a small nuclear device in Tiananmen Square, killing numerous innocent civilians. In response, the Chinese People's Liberation Army launched a retaliatory strike on a GLA nuclear bunker on the outskirts of the city and destroyed it. The PLA began a campaign to drive out the GLA terror cells that had been set up across the country in places such as Hong Kong, the Three Gorges Dam and the Tanggula Mountains in Western China.

After mostly purging the GLA from China, the PLA began their advance towards the main GLA bases in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan (collectively known as Aldastan). Concerned about the GLA's chemical weapons, the United States decided to loan its air support to China, impressed with their recent victories. China managed to take the town of Balykchy in Kyrgyzstan, providing an entrance for their forces to move into Aldastan and began their the sub-capital Bishkek. With the Chinese having sealed off most of the routes, the GLA attempted to reinforce the city by train but the train bridge was destroyed by a small team led by Agent Black Lotus, forcing the starved GLA forces in Bishkek to surrender. PLA then launched a successful strike against the GLA's Asian Cell HQ in Dushanbe and, despite heavy pushback from the GLA, were able to take the city.

In spite of the defeats dealt to them by China, the GLA remained vigilant. When the Chinese moved to take Kazakhstan, the GLA put up a fierce fight against them and managed to cripple the Chinese military presence in Shymkent by blowing up the hydroelectric dam. Despite this victory, the GLA were still weakened from China's offensive and thus began attacking UN supply convoys to secure the necessary funds to build themselves back up. The GLA forces raided aid convoys from the UN in Kazakhstan, attacking the town of Almaty and looting from the civilians in that area in spite of their professed goal of liberating them. The GLA continued their plundering spree in Astana The capital of Kazakhstan, where they took advantage of an anti-occupation riot against the Chinese and American "peacekeepers" jointly occupying the area by supporting the angry mobs and using them to provide cover as they looted the city.

The GLA later advanced into Turkey to deal with an American air base in Adana that posed a threat to their campaign. The GLA succeeded in taking the base, prompting the US to retaliate by capturing the GLA's chemical weapons bunkers on the western shore of the Aral Sea. In response, the GLA made moves to retake their facilities but a group of U.S. military forces led by Colonel Burton managed to explode of the bunkers as GLA was on the verge of reclaiming. In spite of this, the GLA did not give up fighting and drove out the Americans their chemical facilities.

In an attempt to fracture the GLA from within, China began arming rival GLA factions against each other in hopes of triggering a schism but the GLA manage to intercept the arms China was shipping to the GLA splinter forces and use them to destroy the traitors. The GLA followed this by launching a massive attack against the rocket launch facility at Baikonur Cosmodrome, defeating the joint Sino-American taskforce guarding. With the launch pads under their control, the GLA now possessed the power to target anywhere in the world with their chemical ICBMs.

America Enters the War[]

Concerned about the GLA now had to strike any location on the planet with their chemical missiles, the United States fully entered the war against the GLA. After America's aggressive campaign against the GLA presence in the Middle East, the GLA requested a ceasefire and offered to negotiate with the U.N. Despite suspicions from the Americans, the UN agreed and sent to negotiators to talk with the GLA in Kahbara City, Kazakhstan, who were promptly killed by GLA suicide bombers. The GLA later received assistance from a former Chinese general who had defected to their cause and supplied them with a nuclear missile silo. With permission from the Chinse government, the Americans launched a strike that took out the Chinese general and the nuclear threat.

China and America then launched a joint assault on the GLA Command Center in Akmola, Kazakhstan. After a lengthy battle, the combined Sino-American task force managed to take the fortified city and the GLA's main headquarters, though GLA cells that existed elsewhere continued to fight against the American and Chinese military forces.

Trivia[]

  • The Global Liberation Army is partially based off of the real life terrorist organization al-Qaeda.
    • This drew some controversy when the game was released, as the GLA appears as a playable faction within the game.
  • As a terrorist organization that emerged out of the third world and is characterized by anti-imperialist and quasi-religious undertones, the GLA is also similar to the Brotherhood of Nod from the "Tiberium Series" of Command & Conquer games.
