Gná is a major antagonist of the 2022 action-adventure video game God of War Ragnarök. She serves as the new Valkyrie Queen after Sigrún, who came after Freya, and is an optional boss after the main story of the game.
Biography[]
Past[]
Gná was once a friend and messenger for Freya, the Valkyrie Queen at the time. However, after Odin banished her, Sigrun took the role. Sigrun didn't keep the title for long either though, as Odin cursed and banished her as well, before selecting Gná for the title in Sigrun's place due to her undying loyalty to Asgard. She accepted the role graciously, and due to this action of remaining loyal to Odin, she was viewed as a traitor by the other Valkyries.
Time as Queen[]
Later, as Odin walks Atreus through Asgard for the first time, they encounter Gná who informs Odin of some of his daily duties, before leaving. She is seen again at the battle of Asgard in the finale of the game's story, as she is fighting alongside the other Asgard soldiers against Kratos and his army.
Upon Odin's death, filled with hatred and grief, Gná confronts Kratos and Freya in Muspelheim, and prepares to fight them, but giving them time to prepare before doing so. The fight begins, and they clash, Gná spitting hateful remarks at her foes while Freya tries to reason with her. She is soon defeated, and Kratos prepares to kill her by ripping her wings off, but Freya stops him, trying to reason with Gná one last time, begging her to surrender so they don't have to kill her. Gná is unable to let go of her hatred, and so she refuses, telling her former friend to finish her off.
With a heavy heart, Freya pulls out her sword and decapitates Gná, killing her, and reclaiming the title of Valkyrie Queen for herself.
Legacy[]
If Kratos and Freya choose to return to Sigrún, Gunnr, and Eir after killing Gná they can inform them of her death, leading the three Valkyries to laugh and celebrate the death of the traitor, before asking the two gods what execution method they used on her. Sigrun questioned if Kratos had ripped Gná's wings off, while Gunnr suspected that Freya tore her spine out of her back.
Kratos ends their questioning by telling them that Freya acted justly and swiftly, but Sigrun demanded to know the full retelling later.
Trivia[]
- Gná is the second God of War boss from the Norse Era who preferred death over life, the first being Baldur.
- Heimdall does not count for this category, as his refusing to be spared by Kratos was out of him truly believing that he could still win, not him preferring to be killed honorably rather than spared.
- Gná's boss fight, while still difficult, is seen as easier than Sigrun's battle, as Sigrun is considered to be one of if not the hardest God of War bosses overall.
- As mentioned briefly above, Gná shares some similarities to Baldur from the previous God of War game.
- They both have an undying hatred for Freya that they would choose to die rather than end.
- They both are some of the few that remain loyal to Odin up until their death.
- While their main vendetta is not with Kratos, the Spartan gets roped into both of their missions, and he intervenes both times while protecting Freya (even though Freya did not seem to want/need protection at either instance).
- The fates of Baldur and Gná are seemingly some of Freya's biggest regrets.
