Goblins (Doctor Who)

The goblins are the main antagonists of the 2023 Doctor Who Christmas Special The Church on Ruby Road. They are mysterious magical creatures who feed on humans.

They were portrayed by Rachelle Beinart, Jess Judge, Dilu Milah, Giuseppe Lentini, Andrew Francis and Lucas DiSparrow.

Biography[]

The goblins are creatures that feed on the magic of coincidence. The Doctor stated they were capable of riding on the time waves but insisted they were not true time travelers. Aware that the Sundays would be given a new foster child, a newborn baby named Lulubelle, on Christmas Eve, the same day Ruby had been born nineteen years ago, they began weaving a knot of coincidences to increase her flavour. They began causing Ruby to have a series of accidents during the week leading up to the day, increasing the coincidence that surrounded her. For fun, they also did the same to TV host Davina McCall, who Ruby had been meeting at the time.

On Christmas Eve, the goblins took Lulubelle from the Sundays' upper floor flat and took her up to their ship, a flying craft that resembled a sailing ship and was controlled entirely by rope, intending to eat her. They captured the Doctor and Ruby when they climbed aboard the ship in pursuit. (The Doctor noted the goblins would eat them as well.) The goblins then proceeded to attempt to feed Lulubelle to the Goblin King, celebrating the occasion with a song and dance number. The Doctor and Ruby got free and landed between Lulubelle and the Goblin King. The Doctor's joining in with the singing managed to distract the goblins long enough for him to work out which rope to pull to catapult himself, Ruby and Lulubelle out of the ship and back to the Sundays' flat.

Undeterred, the goblins went back in time to the day Ruby was abandoned outside a church as a baby, taking her to feed to the Goblin King instead. The Doctor followed them back and seized hold of their rope ladder with his intelligent glove, pulling the goblin ship down onto the church spire and killing the Goblin King. The goblin ship disappeared, possibly erasing the rest of the goblins, leaving the baby Ruby to fall to earth where the Doctor safely caught her. The novelisation states the Goblins were either erased from existence or simply banished back to where they came from.

Legacy[]

The Doctor used the same intelligent glove he used to defeat the goblins to defeat Sutekh.

The goblins were also mentioned by the Doctor when talking to Whovians created by Lux Imperator, they said they preferred by the critically acclaimed Blink instead of The Church on Ruby Road.

Trivia[]

The titular church where they were defeated is St Mary's Church in Nash, a village two miles south of Newport, Wales.
Some of the goblins names are puns of famous musicians such as Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan.
