A goblin army is approaching from the west!
~ A message that pops up before the Goblins arrive.
Triumph over a goblin invasion, a ragtag regiment of crude, barbaric, pointy-eared warriors and their shadowflame sorcerers.
~ The description for Goblin Punter, obtained after defeating the Goblin Army
A ragtag army of crude, barbaric goblins set out to conquer and destroy. Some wield dark, evil magic.
~ The unused Bestiary Description for the Goblin Army filter.

Goblins, alternatively known as the Goblin Army, are minor antagonists of Re-Logic's 2011 indie sandbox game Terraria. They are a rowdy gang disconnected from the madness involving the Moon Lord who seek to invade and conquer the lands, seeing the current world as a viable target for their attack.

Personality[]

Goblins are surprisingly easy to anger. In fact, they could start a war over cloth!
~ The Goblin Tinkerer hinting to the existence of the Goblin Battle Standard.

The Goblins have been stated to be quite dim. Some are stated to be incompetent at their one job, others stated to be trigger-happy enough to start attacking over the slightest provocation, the Goblins are not exactly the brightest bulbs in the world. However, this is not to say that they aren't capable of being smart, as Sorcerers and the Warlock have studied the arts well enough to be able to utilize offensive and summoning magic respectively.

The Goblins have no known goal except to invade and conquer lands, but the reasons they do so are unknown. The Goblins are willing to attack and kill anyone who gets in their way of conquest, and are even willing to shun out their own kind, even if they only try to help. As shown by the Goblin Tinkerer, the Goblins are capable of doing good, it's just that most of them act purely out of their own selfish desires.

For some inexplicable reason, Goblins carry around spiked metal balls that can be thrown as weapons, despite them never using them at all. They also carry around Harpoons, ranged weapons that repeatedly fire their spears to attack enemies, which again, goes unused by the Goblins. The reason for this is lost even to their own kind, as shown by the Goblin Tinkerer.

Biography[]

After The Terrarian smashes at least one Shadow Orb or Crimson Heart, and if they have at least 200 health, the Goblin Army has a high chance of invading each dawn. Should the army decide to invade, the player will receive notifications on how the Goblin Army is rapidly approaching their destination before they arrive.

After a brief moment, a massive amount of Goblins start spawning around the player's spawn point. Players must kill as many Goblins as possible in order for the army to be considered defeated. After killing enough Goblins, the game stops spawning in new Goblins and ends the event, and remaining Goblins either despawn or stick around to be picked off by the player.

After the first defeat of the army, the chance of them invading again are heavily reduced, and they further become a rarity after Hardmode begins. From there, it's only really practical to use a Goblin Battle Standard to summon them again rather than simply wait for them to attack if the player wishes to gain more items from them.

Additionally, the Goblin Tinkerer now has a chance to spawn underground, tied up and left to rot by the other Goblins for simply pointing out that they were going the wrong direction. After freeing him, the Tinkerer can join the player's town, allowing access to a multitude of different services that are beneficial to game progression, such as reforging gear and merging accessories.

Members[]

Goblin Scouts[]

The Goblin Army sends lone soldiers out from the beaches to seek out colonies to conquer. They give warning with a tattered sigil.
~ The Bestiary Entry for Goblin Scouts.

Goblin Scouts are the basic, albeit somewhat rare soldiers in the Goblin Army. Sent out to look for lands to conquer, these minions spawn at the edges of the map, and drop Tattered Cloth, used to make the Goblin Battle Standard, when defeated. They are tinted blue and dressed in brown exploring gear, a pair of goggles rests atop their head.

Goblin Scouts follow the basic "Fighter" AI, rushing at the player if the former catches sight of the latter. Goblin Scouts can open doors, and only spawn during the day. They are unable to spawn in any of the "evil" biomes (The Corruption, The Crimson, and the Hallow), and do not spawn during a Goblin Invasion.

Goblin Peons[]

Common footsoldiers of the Goblin Army, these foul creatures are good for more little than cannon fodder... and breaking down doors.
~ The Bestiary Entry for Goblin Peons.

The base unit of the Goblin Army, Goblin Peons are the weakest members of the Goblin Army and are not all too plentiful, but when combined with the rest of the army, they can prove to be quite a hassle to work with. Smaller than most, the Goblin Peons use their size to sneak into bases and destroy any doors in their path, allowing their brethren access into buildings. They are small with green skin, and appear to be wearing brown armor made up of either wood or cloth.

Goblin Peons also follow the "Fighter" AI.

Goblin Sorcerers[]

As primitive as they are, some goblins have the potential for manipulating magicked shadow energy through a form of hexing.
~ The Bestiary Entry for Goblin Sorcerers.

Resident mages of the Goblin Army, the Goblin Sorcerers are a bit more of a rarity. With a slight yellowish tint to their skin and dressed in a purple robe, these Goblins have gained a decent control over mana, using it as a weapon against all who dare oppose the invaders.

Goblin Sorcerers follow the "Caster" AI, meaning they teleport to safety before shooting out their projectiles, this case being three Chaos Balls with the ability to travel through blocks. Goblin Sorcerers cannot teleport away or attack for a short period of time if they are hit.

Goblin Thieves[]

Quick strike units of the Goblin Army, these pesky foes specialize in nimble movement and close-quarters combat.
~ The Bestiary Entry for Goblin Thieves.

Goblin Thieves are a semi-common sight in the Goblin Invasion. Dressed in all black and wielding a knife, these speedy attackers are adept in agility, allowing them to bypass defenses with ease. Despite the name, Goblin Thieves do not actually steal anything.

Goblin Peons follow the "Fighter" AI, but are much faster than most other enemies with the same AI. They can break down doors.

Goblin Warrior[]

The backbone of the Goblin Army infantry, these heavily-armored soldiers can take tremendous damage as they march undeterred.
~ The Bestiary Entry for Goblin Warriors.

The stalwart soldiers of the Goblin Army, Goblin Warriors are among the strongest physical attackers of the bunch, and are among the most common foe to be encountered in an invasion. Boasting a high attack power and health pool thanks to their armor, their prowess is undermined by their speed, of which they have little.

Goblin Warriors also follow the "Fighter" AI, and are able to open doors and tall gates.

Goblin Archer[]

Lending ranged support to the Goblin Army, archers keep a distance and pick off distracted and overwhelmed foes.
~ The Bestiary Entry for Goblin Archers

Goblin Archers are a support unit for the army, equipped with a simple wooden bow and green armor. These blue units shoot from a distance, and their attacks cannot be deterred by attacking, thus making them an annoyance to deal with if too many are on screen.

Goblin Archers follow the ranged version of the "Fighter" AI. Their arrows are unable to pass through walls, but are strangely unaffected by the effects of a banner, items that weaken the attacks of the enemy it corresponds to when placed down.

Goblin Warlock[]

Gifted in the darkest of magics, she conjures unfathomable shadowflame ghasts through a powerful hex.
~ The Bestiary Entry for the Goblin Warlock.

The Goblin Warlock, formerly known as the Goblin Summoner, is the most powerful of the Goblins, only attacking once the world has entered Hardmode. Donning a purple dress and blue hair tied in what appears to be a ponytail, the Goblin Warlock uses a mana known as "Shadowflame" to attack. She can fly, use all sorts of magic, and is generally considered to work as the miniboss of the event.

She uses a modified version of the "Fighter" AI. When she gets close enough to the player, the Goblin Warlock jumps up and summons a Shadowflame Apparition, hovers for a bit while shooting Chaos Balls, and finally lands, all in a rectangular shape.

Goblin Tinkerer[]

Exiled from the rest of goblinkind for being an intelligent pacifist, the Tinkerer sells tools for combining accessories into stronger ones.
~ The Bestiary Entry for the Goblin Tinkerer.

The Goblin Tinkerer is an NPC that can be found in the Cavern layers after the Goblins are defeated for the first time, and is the only heroic Goblin in the game. After being freed, he can reside in any unoccupied building and offers both a workplace to combine accessories and the chance to reroll the modifier on weapons in order to get potentially better ones.

Trivia[]

  • Oddly enough, the Chaos Balls the Goblin Sorcerers summon are technically classified as enemies in the game's code, listed under the NPC ID of 30.
  • Due to a collaboration between Terraria and Dungeon Defenders II, other Goblins unrelated to the ones in the Goblin Army can be summoned via the Etherian Crystal as part of the Old One's Army, and are known as Etherian Goblins for disambiguation sake.
  • During the invasion, other enemies unrelated to the Goblins are unable to be spawned.
  • At least 120 Goblins need to be defeated in order for the event to end. For every additional player currently active with at least 200 health, the number is increased by 40, meaning a multiplayer session with two players at that health would face 160 Goblins, 3 would face 200, etc.
  • The only way to stop the invasion is to defeat the Goblins, as dying at any point will not cause the event to end.
    • Attempting to leave before the Goblins arrive simply delays their invasion by a brief moment, but will not stop them from approaching.
  • The Goblin Warlock was originally known as the "Goblin Summoner", but for unknown reasons, the name was changed in version 1.4.4.6, likely due to the fact that the Goblin Summoner is incapable of dropping any items relating to the Summoner class.
  • The Goblin Warlock is the only enemy Goblin to have a confirmed gender, being female.
  • According to the Goblin Tinkerer:
    • The Goblins have trouble during thunderstorms due to the high amount of metal balls they carry, due to metal attracting lightning. This does not come up in-game due to lightning not being a feature in thunderstorms.
    • The Goblins are short enough that they have a hard time surviving during floods due to their short size.
    • Goblin parties have a game known as "Pin the Blame on the Human", a corruption of the party game "Pin the Tail on the Donkey". This also seems to indicate that Goblins are prejudiced against humans, further explaining why they attack them when invading.
