“ | I saw brain cells... Or perhaps the structural diagram of the universe... It sort of looked like the surface of Jupiter... Something like God. Time was stopped, and it peered into me. I felt fear, and yet, at the same time, a mysterious power flowed into me. In that instant, I was enlightened about my destiny. | „ |
~ Psykos describing her encounter with "God". |
God is the main antagonist of the One-Punch Man franchise.
He is a mysterious entity that desires the eradication of all humanity. However, he chooses to remain hidden for the time being and instead grants powers to others who share its thoughts.
Personality[]
God's motives are extremely enigmatic, but it appears that he has a strong hatred for humanity and desires nothing but their extinction. God's reasonings for bestowing power upon others is also unclear, but it seems to usually be those that follow his beliefs. Judging from these behaviors, it seems that he is reluctant to show himself and prefers to stay in the shadows and let others do the work for him.
God also seems to have an opportunistic side, taking advantage of people's emotions, enemies, situations they're in, and similar factors to persuade many of the people he chooses to become his servants. However, deep down, it seems that he doesn't really care about any of these, he only takes on the necessary personality to achieve his goal.
God has shown that He has no tolerance for failure and disappointment; Following his defeat, he stripped the Homeless Emperor of his power, resulting in his death.
Biography[]
Monster Association Arc[]
“ | I will grant you power. What to do with this power, you should know. | „ |
~ God as he shares a bit of his power to Homeless Emperor. |
"God" is first seen in a flashback as Homeless Emperor recounts his backstory to Zombieman. He describes how he stumbled upon him in the park one day. He compliments Homeless Emperor for his "correct" ideology, but states the human has no reason to die. Instead, he gave him his incredibly destructive powers, telling the newly-empowered human he should know what to do with this power, before then leaving.
During the fight between Orochi and Saitama deep underground, Orochi reveals a tablet he discovered in an ancient shrine, which depicted Orochi and stated that a worthy sacrifice was needed in order to resurrect "God", leading Orochi to believe this was referring to him. Soon after, the hero easily defeats Orochi with a single punch. Before the ancient cave collapses, his remnants crawl to the tablet while the full picture of the actual "God" appears in the mural and is unseen by the Monster King.
It is later revealed to have given Psykos power during her battle with Tatsumaki, as well as possibly being behind the vision that drove her insane, which would make it indirectly responsible for the creation of the Monster Association.
God later communicates with Saitama, Flashy Flash, and Manako after they touch a mysterious cube. He is surprised that there are three of them, and then tells them to touch the cube in order to either gain power if they are worthy or have it confiscated if they are not. After that, Blast appears, asking Saitama, Flashy Flash and Manako if they had accepted the deal. Blast is relieved none of the heroes have, and teleports the cube to an unknown location. God makes a final shocked comment concerning the presence of Blast.
“ | Silence. I am taking them back. Your power, your life, they are both forfeit. | „ |
~ Homeless Emperor deemed as unworthy by God as his powers along with his lifeforce is taken away by the deity. |
After Homeless Emperor's defeat, the entity appears in his mind, only with its appearance being changed into a colossal giant of flesh and fractured bones. It then expresses its frustration at Homeless Emperor's failure and takes away his power and his life.
Later, after being knocked unconscious by Saitama, a now de-monsterized Garou is contacted by God. Desiring to make Garou his vessel, the deity poses as Garou’s former teacher, Bang, and offers the Hero Hunter help in defeating his foe. Garou, knowing that Bang would never offer help so easily, sees through the ruse, slapping away God’s hand. However, merely touching God’s hand proved enough to establish a connection, and Garou awoke.
Now empowered by God, the Hero Hunter transformed into Awakened Garou: Cosmic Fear Mode. Combining Bang’s teachings with the power of God, Garou gained the ability to control and mimic all the energies and forces in the universe, which he displayed through God’s martial art: All Life Eradication Fist, a fighting style centered around replicating extremely dangerous natural phenomena for the purpose of causing as much death and destruction as possible. From there, Garou battles the Caped Baldy, becoming the first opponent to ever match Saitama at full power.
While in Cosmic Fear Mode, Garou displays a level of cruelty he had never shown before, ecstatic at the carnage he can now cause, despite Garou having a strict “no-killing” code. It is heavily implied that despite being able to stave off God’s possession and retain his free will instead of becoming a puppet, God was still able to influence Garou’s thoughts to an extent, explaining his change in personality.
After Garou discovers that he accidentally killed Tareo, he fully snaps out of God’s influence and seeks to right his wrongs. Coming to an agreement with Saitama, Garou teaches the hero how to utilize the final secret technique imparted onto him by God: Time Travel. God intervenes and takes away Garou’s power and life as he did to Homeless Emperor before, turning the Hero Hunter’s body into a statue of salt.
Despite this interruption, Saitama is able to successfully travel back in time and defeat Cosmic Fear Garou before he kills anyone. After being hit by the Zero Punch, God’s power and influence leaks out of Garou’s body and disappears, causing the former Hero Hunter to revert back into his human form.
Power Bestowal Targets[]
God has the unique power to grant anyone he wants with a portion of his power or enhance their own as long as they accept his deal by taking the appearance of the respective individual who is important to the one he is targeting through manipulation. Although his intentions are unclear, it is known for some time in the series that he has been seeking for a vessel who he deems as worthy enough for him to do so. In case if that candidate fails to meet his satisfaction, the enigmatic entity will take back his powers as he sucks the life out of his target, as shown with Homeless Emperor's final moments. Those that received his power include:
Quotes[]
“ | Come. Take my power, and we can strike down your enemies together. | „ |
~ God manipulating Tatsumaki. |
“ | Three visitors at the same time? How unusual. Let me see if you are worthy vessels to bestow my power upon. | „ |
~ God to Saitama, Flashy Flash and Manako. |
Trivia[]
- Choze and Vaccine Man's energy projectiles are the same as Homeless Emperor's as said by the series' artist Yusuke Murata, implying that them two could have also been sent by God.
- Similarly to Homeless Emperor, Vaccine Man stated that he had the goal to end human civilization, but it was "Mother Nature" he worked for, instead of God. However, the mysterious being himself does not appear to know who exactly he is referring to.
