“ | Long and hard didst thou fight. Tarnished Warrior. Spurned by the grace of gold. Be assured, the Elden Ring resteth close at hand. Alas, I am returned. To be granted audience once more. Upon my name as Godfrey, The first Elden Lord! | „ |
~ Godfrey preparing to battle the Tarnished. |
Godfrey, born as Hoarah Loux, is a major antagonist and boss in the 2022 dark fantasy action role-playing video game Elden Ring. He was the first Elden Lord and King Consort to Marika, who bore several demigod children with him, including Godwyn and the twins Morgott and Mohg, thus creating the Golden Lineage of demigods. During the early days of the Age of the Erdtree, Godfrey led Marika's armies in the War against the Giants.
Eventually, after his last worthy foe fell, he lost the Grace of the Erdtree and was banished alongside his warriors from the Lands Between. As the very first Tarnished, Godfrey returned to his roots as a simple warrior and became the Chieftain of the Badlands. After the Shattering, Godfrey returned to the Lands Between to reclaim his mantle but was slain by another Tarnished warrior.
He is voiced by Edward Rowe.
Personality[]
“ | That will be all. Thou didst me good service, Serosh. I've given thee courtesy enough. Rrraaargh! Now I fight as Hoarah Loux! Warrior! | „ |
~ Godfrey, acknowledging Serosh's service before shedding himself of his restraint and becoming bloodlusted. |
“ | It's been a long while, Morgott. | „ |

Godfrey's noble reputation inspired the likes of other legendary figures such as Radahn, who idolized the legendary warrior and followed in his footsteps on becoming a powerful general.
At the same time, much like Radagon of the Golden Order, Godfrey was known for being a barbaric warrior with an immense lust for battle. Because of this, he took upon his back the beast regent Serosh, the Lord of Beasts, who acted as a restrainer to contain Godfrey's lust. As Elden Lord, Godfrey acted as Queen Marika's loyal protector and willingly carried out his duties in waging wars with the Fire Giants and the Storm Lord, nearly exterminating the Fire Giant species and slaying the Storm Lord as a whole as a result.
However, in spite of his actions, Godfrey was in fact an honorable and just man that cared for his loved ones. He even remembered his omen son, Morgott when seeing him again for the first time, and was deeply saddened to see his corpse slowly fading away in his arms before leaving him to rest. Some cut dialogue also suggests that his loyalty to Marika was more out of love than simply servitude. Even when battling the Fire Giants, he acknowledged their king and the Storm Lord to be worthy opponents and was not entirely pleased to slay them, having lost opponents that gave him and Serosh a challenging battle.
When battling the Tarnished, he acknowledges and respects them humbly, to the point that he decides to abandon any restraint and use his full strength against them. Upon his dying words, he considers their strength befitting of an Elden Lord.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | The age of the Erdtree began amongst conflict, when Godfrey was lord of the battlefield. He led the War against the Giants. Faced the Storm Lord, alone. And then, there came a moment. When his last worthy enemy fell. And it was then, as the story is told, that the hue of Lord Godfrey's eyes faded. | „ |
~ In-game description of Godfrey's prowess as a warrior. |
Hoarah Loux was considered to be one of the greatest fighters the Lands Between had ever seen, and his later deeds as Elden Lord Godfrey reached legendary status to such an extent that his strength and skill continued to be revered even after he was stripped of his grace and hounded from the Lands Between.
Powers[]
- Superhuman strength: Godfrey was one of the strongest mortals to ever walk the Lands Between and may have gotten even stronger after brandishing the Elden Ring and becoming a Lord; with his blows alone being enough to shatter stone to pieces. His enormous strength also allows him to jump far into the air and clear great distances.
- Superhuman endurance: As one of the most veteran warriors in the setting, he can fight through a prolonged period without showing any signs of slowing down or falling exhausted.
- Superhuman durability: Likewise, even after shedding his armor, Hoarah Loux can easily tank blows from weapons with his bare skin.
- Superhuman speed: Despite his towering size, Godfrey is very fast and agile.
- Heat generation: Godfrey has the power to either plunge his axe on the ground or punch it with his bare hands to saturate it with an immense wave of heat that charges to the point of causing devastating explosions.
Abilities[]
- Leadership: Be it as the chieftain Hoarah Loux or as the Elden Lord Godfrey, he is renowned for his leadership skills, especially to inspire and lead his troops into battle.
- Master combatant: As one of the greatest warriors to ever exist in the Lands Between, it was said that Godfrey fought many powerful champions during the Erdtree conquest and eventually defeated them all to the point he lost the grace of gold because of the lack of worthy opponents.
- Expert axe wielder: As Elden Lord, Godfrey’s signature weapon is his great golden axe. He makes effective use of it by combining conventional strikes with his superhuman strength and is capable of accurately throwing it into an opponent that seeks to escape him.
- Expert wrestler: Once he casts Serosh aside, Hoarah Loux opts to fight using nothing but his hands in a savagely brutal but highly effective fighting style involving grabs, kicks, choke slams and even claws.
