“ | When Godzilla appeared 30 years ago, it was regarded by the Odo Islanders as a legendary monster come to life. When the world is in chaos, monsters appear. Legends like this are all over the world. The return of Godzilla means the world is going to be in turmoil. I just want to send it home. | „ |
~ Professor Hayashida, The Return of Godzilla. |
Godzilla, sometimes known as Heisei Godzilla, is the titular main protagonist of Heisei era of Godzilla franchise.
One of the last living members of prehistoric species of dinosaurs called Godzillasaurus that used to inhabit Lagos Island, Godzilla was exposed to a massive dose of radiation through being teleported to Bering Sea by humans from year 2204 and subsequent crash of Soviet nuclear submarine in 1970s, mutating him into a ginormous atomic beast single-mindedly set on completely destroying Japan[1] and locating other living members of his kind.
Over the course of his series, Godzilla evolved from being purely the main antagonistic force to being an anti-hero merely happening to save humanity by defeating other monsters. He ultimately met his end after absorbing the uranium deposits from Baas Island, dying over the course of days as his body began melting down, being succeeded by Godzilla Junior.
Throughout all Heisei era films, Godzilla was portrayed by late Kenpachiro Satsuma, who previously portrayed Showa era villains such as Hedorah and Gigan, and would later play as Pulgasari in 1985 North Korean film of the same name and Yamata no Orochi in Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon. His Godzillasaurus form was portrayed by Wataru Fukuda, who ironically would later play Heisei versions of Mechagodzilla and MOGUERA.

Appearance[]
In his original form, Godzillasaurus resembled early 20th Century reconstructions of carnivore dinosaurs, having upright posture, proportionally small head with double set of sharp teeth, grey eyes, long neck, greyish-beige scaly skin texture, small arms with three clawed digits per hand, three toes with characteristic ankle claw on each foot, as well as long tail that drags behind the dinosaur. He stood at 12 metres (39.3 ft) and weighted 60 metric tons (66.14 US tons).
Godzilla's first stage of mutation possessed rather massive head with small pointy ears and large eyes with brown iris, thick lips with sharp needle-like teeth underneath, massive frame with dark-grey scaly skin, proportionally larger bent arms with three clawed fingers and thumb, four clawed toes without ankle claw, and much longer tail. In addition to that, Godzilla has developed bone-white, leaf-shaped dorsal plates on his back. He stands at 80 metres (262.4 ft) tall, 180 metres (590.55 ft) long, and has mass of 50,000 metric tons (55,116 US tons). Strangely, he lacks double set of teeth.
After spending five years in a volcano, Godzilla's head became smaller and more feline-like in appearance, having nostrils close to each other and irises taking almost entirety of eye sockets. He has double set of teeth instead of fangs, his neck is longer and body more muscular, especially around the chest and thigh area. The size of his dorsal plates was also increased, making lateral row almost the size of center row. In an aftermath of absorbing Soviet nuclear submarine, Godzilla stood at full 100 metres (328.08 ft) in height, 200 metres (656.16 ft) in length, and weighted 60,000 metric tons (66,139 US tons), gaining even more muscular appearance and vicious face.
When entering critical mass state, Godzilla became more massive in build and developed radiating orange-yellow spots all over his body, particularly on his torso, belly, thighs and shoulders, which have vein-like patterns coming off of them. His eyeballs are red and pulsating, with golden irises, whereas dorsal plates change color from white to reddish-orange. His size remains unchanged.
Personality[]
Godzilla is animalistic, aggressive and easily irritable, attacking humanity mostly due to his need to regularly absorb nuclear energy, but also due to his grudge against Japan during World War II, when he was left for death after risking his life. He attacks military with little to no provocation due to trauma of his injuries, and showed an ability to remember human faces for decades. While he faces against and kills other giant monsters, it is implied that he does so by defending his territory, and likewise would immediately become the main threat to Japan after killing his rivals.
Despite these tendencies, Godzilla actually seeks out other members of his kind due to feeling lonely in strange, modern world and also due to his need for successor. For that reason, he decided to abandon his goal of destroying Japan and halted his attacks, preferring to live a quiet life on Baas Island with his adopted son, Godzilla Junior. After the island exploded due to unstable uranium deposits, Godzilla went back to destroying cities due to being in immense and constant agony of his burning form. However, he appeared to have accepted his incoming death after Destoroyah killed Junior.
In combat, Godzilla is an adaptable opportunist, capable of forming new techniques on fly and finding weak spots on both machines' and monsters' bodies. He cannot be defeated the same way twice, implying that Godzilla actively learns from his defeats at the hands of humanity. While he was initially portrayed as an animal who would easily fall into traps, such as Mount Mihara, Godzilla overtime developed human-like sapience, being able to figure out that cockpit was Mecha-King Ghidorah's weak spot and that SpaceGodzilla relies on Fukuoka Tower to power himself. He also did not stray away from barbarian brutality on his enemies, as demonstrated when he bit out Battra's throat and fired atomic breath into an open wound.
Powers and Abilities[]
Kaiju physiology: After absorbing enormous amounts of radiation in a crash of Soviet nuclear submarine, this Godzillasaurus specimen has evolved into Godzilla, a nigh-indestructible, amphibious, radiotropic monster with extremely destructive capabilities. He is stated to have two brains, one in the head, one at the base of his tail, to control his motor functions properly, and if one of them is severely damaged, Godzilla will be paralyzed.[2] Aside from that, Godzilla possesses magnetic sense like birds, has functioning sonar underwater[3] and can locate potential rivals with precognition-like accuracy. Being a Godzillasaurus, Godzilla can telepathically locate and talk to other members of his kind.[2]
- Energy absorption: Godzilla's most pivotal ability is undoubtedly his ability to absorb various amounts of energy, mainly nuclear radiation, by draining man-made nuclear reactors through physical contact. He could also absorb lightning of radioactive storm created by nuclear explosion in upper parts of atmosphere to restart his own heart after Super X nullified his radiation with cadmium shells.[3] Godzilla can also adapt to cosmic radiation and absorb it to fuel himself,[4] as well as uranium deposits and life essence of other monsters that willingly give it away, such as Rodan.[2] Absorbing energy may cause Godzilla to grow larger and more powerful, and also allow him to cure previously lethal infections such as Anti-Nuclear Bacteria.[1] Godzilla can also redirect absorbed energy, as seen when he electrocuted Mechagodzilla through Shock Anchors,[2] and willingly give away his life essence to other monsters, like Godzilla Junior.[5]
- Atomic Breath: Godzilla's primary weapon of choice is neon-blue pillar of concentrated heat and nuclear radiation, normally burning at 500,000 Celsius degrees and capable of decimating any man-made structures, such as tanks, Maser Cannons, bridges, battleships and skyscrapers, and even seriously damage the likes of Biollante and Rodan. Godzilla can fire atomic breath in quick succession or in short bursts.[3] Whenever monster is about to use this ability, his dorsal plates would emit blue light. He can also use it underwater.
- Spiral ray: After absorbing Soviet nuclear submarine, Godzilla gained ability to supercharge his breath to create even stronger variant of atomic breath. His dorsal fins emit electrical aura on top of blue light, and unleashed beam is surrounded by spirals and has enough force to decapitate middle head of King Ghidorah, as well as damage his wings.[1] When Rodan sacrificed himself to revive Godzilla, kaiju gained red variant of the beam wrapped in yellow spirals, burning at one million Celsius degrees and capable of melting Mechagodzilla's Synthetic Alloy. Godzilla reused that ability after absorbing cosmic energy from SpaceGodzilla's crystals, although burning at "only" 900,000 Celsius degrees, Godzilla could destroy SpaceGodzilla and MOGUERA in three hits. Godzilla's normal atomic breath later was permanently replaced by spiral ray in burning form, increasing infinitely in power every time it is used.
- Atomic Pulse: Even before his power-up, Godzilla could release 360-degree energy pulse that repels attackers and destroys any objects within immediate vicinity. It is strong enough to break apart Biollante's vines, stun King Ghidorah, knock down Mothra and Rodan and shortcut Mechagodzilla. Godzilla's ability to control these pulses is lost when he enters his burning stage, steadily increasing in power.
- Superhuman Strength: Whenever his energy-based attacks prove ineffective against other monsters, Godzilla would fall back to his immense mass and strength, using them at close-quarters to overwhelm his opponents. He is able to crush tanks and other vehicles flat under his feet, tear through buildings like an air, and even lift and throw monsters several times heavier than him, such as 70,000-ton King Ghidorah or 150,000-ton Mechagodzilla. Godzilla's jaws are also powerful weapon when fighting, being able to bite off Imago Battra's throat.[6]
- Superhuman Durability: Godzilla is essentially a living tank, being completely impervious to all forms of conventional weaponry and resistant to monster attacks. He is immune to intense heat, surviving five years submerged in magma of Mount Mihara between The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante, as well as swimming through miles of 1,500 Celsius degrees magma in Godzilla vs. Mothra. His body can survive absolute zero temperatures, like being completely frozen solid in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, and withstand both Biollante's acid and King Ghidorah's electricity. Unlike original Godzilla, this version is resistant to Micro-Oxygen and can survive repeated hits from Destoroyah. Godzilla is immune to his own atomic breath, withstanding numerous deflected and amplified 10,000-fold shots from Super X2 to no harm.[7][8] He also appears to have ability to survive being sucked into black hole, as demonstrated by SpaceGodzilla. Even prior to his mutation, Godzillasaurus could withstand fire from machine guns and rocket launchers to no harm, bleeding only after being shot from a battleship.[1]
- Regeneration: Even if he were to be injured, Godzilla could quickly close his wounds using component known as G-Cells in his cellular structure, which is stated to render him completely immortal and destined to walk the Earth forever. His ability to regenerate grants mutants such as Biollante ability to survive without water and sunlight, although may also destabilize their cellular structure after enough damage.
- Psychic shield: In addition to physical attacks, Godzilla can force any unwanted telepathic activity out of his mind through sheer willpower, rendering Miki Saegusa unconscious in both Godzilla vs. Biollante and Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, even when her powers were amplified by Project T technology.
- Aquatic survivability: Godzilla can breathe underwater and swim at the speed of 40 knots.[3] He can also fight other monsters underwater, such as Larval Stage Battra.
- Godzillification: Godzilla's body is infested with hundreds of leech-like parasites called Shockirus, which are in fact animals enlarged and mutated by drinking his radioactive blood through a process known as Godzillification. It is theorized that this phenomena is caused by a pathogen known as the "G-Virus"[9] These monstrous creatures can jump across the room, are dangerous enough to single-handedly kill a fishing group, can survive being stabbed with a knife and overpower a grown man.
Weaknesses[]
- Energy overload: Godzilla may enter meltdown state if he absorbs too much energy at once, resulting in temporary increase in power but also eventual death over the course of days. In this state, any physical attacks can cause total meltdown, creating an explosion "unseen since the time began", capable of wiping out mankind by igniting Earth's atmosphere, potentially destroying an entire planet. After cooling down Godzilla's temperature to absolute zero by Super X3, Godzilla was able to safely melt into a puddle of flesh and release radioactive energy, which would revive dead Godzilla Junior and turn him into an adult.[5]
- Secondary brain: Due to Godzilla's immense size, he cannot control his motor functions without secondary brain located at the base of his tail. After discovering that weakness, G-Force modified and equipped Mechagodzilla with a device called G-Crusher, which was able to splatter Godzilla's brain and cripple him. However, Rodan's sacrifice allowed Godzilla to regenerate it near-instantly.[2] This strategy has not been exploited since.
- Cadmium: Nuclear reactions happening in Godzilla's heart can be tampered with through cadmium shells that Super X is equipped with.[3]
- Magnetic waves: Godzilla can be confused and fooled by sudden shifts in magnetic waves, causing him to blindly follow them and making him vulnerable to traps.[3]
- Bright lights: Godzilla can be agitated by flashing bright lights into his eyes, making him roar in anger and exposing his vulnerable mouth interior to potential attacks.[3]
- ANEB (formerly): Godzilla could be weakened by being infected with nuclear-decomposing artificial bacteria called ANEB, which severely limits Godzilla's stamina and was able to put him into two-year-long coma state after exhausting his energy fuel in a fight with Biollante.[8] It is implied that after absorbing the energy from Soviet nuclear submarine, Godzilla has become immune to it.

Trivia[]
- This incarnation of Godzilla was originally intended to be mutated Tyrannosaurus rex, however concept artist Shinji Nishikawa could not accept the idea that Godzilla was mutated from real-life species.
- This version of Godzilla shares several traits similar to Hulk from Marvel Comics, such as destructive nature, radiation-based powers, desire to be left alone, starting out as villains and gradually changing into anti-heroes, ability to resist telepathy, spawning mutants based on their DNA, extremely powerful form that would eventually destroy the world (World Breaker Hulk/Burning Godzilla), and having potential future where they severely cripple humanity (Maestro/Futurian Japan).
- This incarnation of Godzilla was the first to introduce the concept of Godzilla-based mutants into movies, starting out with Biollante. However, this concept was predated by Raban from 1958 manga Monster Raban, who also possessed Godzilla's DNA.
- At the time, this version of Godzilla was the tallest and heaviest movie incarnation until it was surpassed by Legendary Pictures' version of Godzilla. However, he was tied with GTS incarnation for heaviest version and GFW incarnation for the tallest movie Godzilla.
- However, he was never the tallest Godzilla ever, as Hanna Barbera Godzilla stood at 121.92 metres (400 feet) and Marvel Comics Godzilla stood at 184 metres (603.67 feet).
