Goh Hamazaki is a supporting character in the Yakuza Saga of the Like a Dragon (Ryū ga Gotoku) franchise. He is a major antagonist in Yakuza 3 and a supporting character in Yakuza 4, serving as a major character of Saejima's story arc and a supporting character of Kiryu's story arc.

Originally the Patriarch of the Yokohama-based Hamazaki Family and one of the Tojo Clan's most powerful lieutenants, he earned the moniker "The Emperor of Hama".

He was voiced by George Takahashi.

Appearance[]

Hamazaki is a very large man with a large, silver suit and a necklace. He has pushed back hair. In Yakuza 4, his hair is shaven and he wears prison clothes.

Personality[]

During Yakuza 3, Hamazaki was very cruel and sadistic, with his very first appearance involving him blowing up a Chinese restaurant. He also is very cunning, forming a partnership with Lau Ka Long and the Snake Flower Triad, which helps him rise up the ranks of the Tojo Clan despite being a family of 10 people. After Long's death, Hamazaki is forced into hiding, and stabs Kiryu, even after he offers him a second chance.

However, during the events of Yakuza 4, he begins to have a change of heart after meeting Taiga Saejima. Being the second person to ever trust him, Hamazaki puts so much faith in Saejima that he helps him break out of prison and forms a sworn brother pact with him. He even sacrifices himself so that Saejima can escape. During his reunion with Kiryu, he also showed respect and remorse to him, a far cry from the vengeful man that he once was.

Biography[]

In 2007, Hamazaki formed a partnership with the Snake Flower Triad, allowing his pathetically small family to become a direct subsidiary of the Tojo Clan. Hamazaki eventually rises to the top ranks of the Tojo Clan with his partnership kept under wraps.

Two years later, Hamazaki finds himself in a pickle: he wants land in Okinawa, but a man named Kazuma Kiryu is currently in possession of it. Desparate, he attempts to convince Goro Majima to use his family to stop Kiryu, to which he refuses to do. Frustrated, he convinces his partner Lau Ka Long and his Triad to invade Kamurocho. Long, who had been defeated by Kiryu four years prior, agrees to the partnership and makes his move. After Lau is killed, the Snake Flower Triad HQ in China destroys Hamazaki's family for allowing their Japanese branch leader to be killed, forcing him into hiding and destroying every ounce of power he once attained.

After Yoshitaka Mine's death, Hamazaki confronts Kiryu in Kamurocho. A shell of the man he once was, Hamazaki tells Kiryu that he is a wanted man and that he would be better off dead than to live in personal shame. Kiryu tries to convince Hamazaki to start anew, stretching his hand out as a sign of trust. Hamazaki walks towards Kiryu, but stabs him in the abdomen with a knife. With Kiryu collapsing, Hamazaki mocks him as he is pinned to the ground by Kazuki and Yuya until police arrive. He is arrested and transferred to the infamous Okinawa Penetentiary No. 2, where he meets Taiga Saejima.

After Saejima is beaten senseless by Saito the prison guard, Hamazaki manages to see him and hatches an escape plan with him. Thanks to the assistance of their fellow inmates, the two manage to get past the guards. While sneaking out, Hamazaki rushes to obtain confidential documents pertaining to the Tojo Clan. The two alert the guards and begin to fight through together, until they are confronted by Saito in the prison yard. After a brutal showdown with the montrous guard, Hamazaki takes several bullets to ensure Saejima can escape, and grabs Saito to take him into the sea with him. Before he falls, he tells Saejima to find a man named Kiryu.

A few days later, a bloodied and weary Hamazaki washes up on the beaches of Okinawa, right in front of the Morning Glory Orphanage. He is immediately noticed by Haruka Sawamura, who covers her mouth in fear. Kiryu, being the kind soul he is, gives medical aid to his former foe, but Haruka refuses to let him near the other children. Kiryu repeatedly attempts to resolve Haruka's deep hate of Hamazaki, which doesn't work. Hamazaki attempts to request Kiryu to assist the Tojo Clan, but reconsiders after seeing he has a life, and tells him he will turn himself in.

Kiryu and Hamazaki make their way to the police station only to meet up with Yasuko Saejima, the half-sister of Taiga Saejima. The group meet at the abandoned office of Tetsuo Tamashiro, but are ambushed by Saito, who is now out for blood. Kiryu proves himself to be more than a match for the prison guard, but as more police begin to arrive, Hamazaki lets Kiryu and Yasuko make their escape. Once the two leave, Hamazaki begins to bleed through his shirt, succumbing to his gunshot wounds. He is quickly escorted to the hospital, where Haruka drops her hatred for the man. Hamazaki uses his dying breaths to tell Haruka to tell Kiryu to save the Tojo Clan, as it was "the only proof that guys like us existed". His body eventually shuts down, and he dies with Haruka as his only companion. His body is sent to the orphanage, where Kiryu buried his body.

Trivia[]

  • Although he is not a boss in either game, Hamazaki can be fought in Yakuza 3's survival mode and coliseum.
  • Hamazaki is one of the only villains to redeem himself in a later game.
  • Hamazaki is the only major patriarch from Yakuza 3 to survive to Yakuza 4.
