Gohmas are one-eyed arthropodal creatures and recurring antagonists in The Legend of Zelda franchise.

Characteristics[]

Gohmas are arthropodal cyclops that reside in dungeons. They have the characteristics of arachnids, crustaceans, or both. The eye is always their main weak point. Sometimes, they are mothers of Gohma Larvae.

Biography[]

Unified Timeline[]

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[]

Main article: Queen Gohma

Downfall Timeline[]

This timeline occurs if Link is defeated and killed by Ganondorf at the end of Ocarina of Time.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening[]

Gohma la

Two Gohmas appear as mini-bosses in the Catfish's Maw. Similar to the first The Legend of Zelda, they are immune to all damage until they open their eyes, making them vulnerable to the Hookshot or arrows. Playing the "Ballad of the Wind Fish" makes the Gohmas automatically open their eyes.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons[]

Gohma oos

The Gohma serves as the boss of the Dancing Dragon Dungeon. It battles similarly to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, but it blocks its eye with its large claws. If Link tries to attack the Gohma directly, it will throw him on the ground to deal massive damage. The claw can be destroyed by slashing it enough times.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom[]

TBA

The Legend of Zelda[]

Gohma 1

There are two variants of Gohmas in The Legend of Zelda, a red one and a blue one. The red Gohma first appears as a boss in one dungeon and a miniboss in another. It has an impregnable shell armor, and shoots beams while its eye is closed. To defeat it, Link must strike its eye while its open. The blue Gohma appears in Second Quest and is much stronger than the red one.

In the main game, Gohma is the boss of Level 6 and a mini-boss of Level 8. In Second Quest, Gohma is the boss of Level 6 and a mini-boss of Level 7, while the blue Gohma is the boss of Level 7.

Child Timeline[]

This is the timeline that Link returned to at the end of Ocarina of Time, where he is able to warn the Royal Family of Ganondorf's deception and have him arrested. Unfortunately, this act causes Ganondorf to gain the Triforce of Power and be banished to the Twilight Realm.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess[]

A Gohma known as Armogohma appears in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as the boss of the Temple of Time. Link defeats her by shooting her eye and using the Dominion Rod on one of the statues to hammer on her while she's down. After breaking her shell with three hits, the eye reveals itself to be a much smaller spider and tries to escape along with some larvae. After Link finishes her off, he receives another shard of the Mirror of Twilight.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures[]

Gohma fsa

Gohma appears as a regular enemy and a mini-boss, with the latter shooting fireballs from its eye. Both types can only be harmed by shooting arrows at their eyes.

Adult Timeline[]

This is the timeline that Link left behind at the end of Ocarina of Time after helping the Sages deal away Ganondorf. However, Ganondorf inevitably broke free and rampaged across Hyrule, leading to the gods flooding the entire kingdom to keep him at bay and turning it into the Great Sea.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker[]

Gohma ww

Gohma seen in the Wind Waker remaster.

The Gohma in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker serves a similar role to the one in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. After Ganondorf's return from his imprisonment in the Adult Timeline, he places Gohma inside Dragon Roost Cavern right below the Spirit of the Sky Valoo. As a result, it irritates the Spirit of the Sky by yanking on his tail, making him react in pain and rage, which causes great trouble on Dragon Roost Island since due to his constant raging, the younger Ritos like Prince Komali can't visit him to receive a scale and receive their wings.

Link arrives at the island and meets the Rito, who tell him about the situation. After that, Link and Medli, Valoo's apprentice and attendant, traverse through the dungeon to investigate, and they find out the root of the problem. Link later reaches Gohma's lair, breaking down its hard shell and then striking its weak spot. This relieves Valoo of his discomfort, and Link receives Din's Pearl from Komali.

Gohma reappears in Ganon's Tower.

Converged Timeline[]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom[]

Main article: Marbled Gohma

Other Media[]

Hyrule Warriors[]

Gohma is one of the Giant Bosses in all three versions of Hyrule Warriors, appearing in several Legend and Adventure Mode stages. Gohma has very high defenses in all parts of its body other than its eye, which it can shield with its pinchers. It attacks by lunging with its claws or shooting laser beams from its eye. All of its attacks damage nearby enemies as well. After unleashing a laser beam, the eye turns from red to blue. Shooting at it with the Bow in this window causes the Gohma to flip over and expose its Weak Point Gauge.

Cadence of Hyrule[]

A variant of the Gohmas appears as the boss of the Lost Swamp called Gohmaracas, depicted as a Gohma holding a pair of maracas. Like other Gohmas, it attacks by shooting lasers from its eye, but is only able to move left and right. It can summon smaller variants of itself called Gohmaracas Larvae to assist it. Attacking the eye of the Gohmaracas damages it, with eight hits needed to defeat it.

Cartoons[]

Gohmas appear in three episodes of DIC Entertainment's The Legend of Zelda cartoon. One appears in "Cold Spells", summoned by Ganon to kill Link and Zelda after Ganon traps them in a glass container. Spryte distracts the beast with a bolt of energy, allowing Link to escape. Ganon shoots fire at Link, but Link tricks him into hitting the Gohma instead, destroying it.

Another Gohma appears in "Stinging a Stinger" within a lair that Ganon has Link, Zelda, and Sleezenose locked in. Link has Sleezenose use his lockpicks to open the gate as he and Zelda distract the monster. Zelda ties her Magic Rope around one of the Gohma's horn, where it promptly spins around to spin Zelda around. Link then uses his Boomerang to cause a stalactite to fall from the ceiling onto the Gohma, allowing Zelda to continue spinning until the rope is tied around the Gohma. Once it was completely immobilized, they make their escape much to Ganon's anger.

Two more Gohmas appear in "The Moblins are Revolting", released from the Evil Jar. They can be seen moving the Evil Jar to another covert.

Comics/Manga[]

In the story To the First Power of the second issue for the Valiant Comics, Zelda is attacked by a Gohma while training in Level 1. She tries to fire a sword beam at it, but is unable to due to the knockback from the force of the beam, forcing her to retreat. Further on, Zelda finds the dungeon's treasure: a magic bow. Using it, Zelda fires an arrow straight into the Gohma's eye, killing it instantly.

In the interactive book The Crystal Trap, a single Gohma appears as a minor antagonist. In the desert, if Zelda choses to go in the path of a palace in the distance, she accidentally steps on a hollow surface, aggregating a Gohma. Knowing of their clumsiness, Zelda runs in circles around the Gohma, causing it to tip onto its back due to dizziness. Zelda then shoots an arrow at a faint white spot on the creature's belly, defeating it.

In the official manga of Ocarina of Time, Gohma plays a similar role to the game, only here she is far more sadistic given she can now talk. She was originally a scarab that Ganondorf corrupted with dark magic. She parasitizes off the Deku Tree in search of the Kokiri's Emerald until she is fought and defeated by Link.
