~ Another one of Bierce's warnings about the Gold Watchers. |
The Gold Watchers are minor antagonists in the game Dark Deception, appearing as the main monsters in the third level, Deadly Decadence.
They are voiced by Christopher Corey Smith, who also voices Malak and the Clown Gremlins in the game. He also voices Acid Man in Mega Man 11 and The Joker in the Lego Batman videogames.
Biography[]

~ A plaque warning Doug Houser of the Gold Watchers |
The Gold Watchers make their first appearance in Deadly Decadence, acting as the main enemies of the level. Similar to the infamous Weeping Angels of Doctor Who fame, these beasts can only move when the player is not looking at them, freezing in place when the player turns around. Their quick speed and knowledge of the player's location makes them a dangerous threat.
In the first act, three Gold Watchers stalk the player through a hedge maze, and in the second act, the player must deal with four of the brutes inside their mansion. Both in the second and final act, Malak himself appears to try and kill the player, alongside around 15 other Watchers. As of the Enhanced Version, they will also be aided by the Titan Watcher, a giant version of the Gold Watchers serving as a boss. In the boss battle the player must avoid Gold Watchers, the Titan Watcher and Malak and get the Titan Watcher to destroy the lock holding the gates with its axe attack in order to escape.
Due to Bierce noting that their realm is falling apart when taking the Ring Piece, it's possible most of the Gold Watchers died with their nightmare. However, in Chapter 4, some of the Gold Watchers are seen drinking tea, implying that some of them escaped. These Gold Watchers do not harm the player.
As of the Enhanced Version, it is shown that the Gold Watchers are the souls of people who let their greed consume them and now exist trapped in the very thing they craved.
Appearance[]
The Gold Watchers are, fittingly enough, statue-like monsters covered in golden skin, having a permanent grin and wearing white colonial uniforms. When they kill the player, their jaw elongates. They are also occasionally seen wielding an axe or even 2. In frenzy mode they gain red eyes, a cracked face and their uniforms change to a dark blue. There is also lifeless stone versions of the beasts in the hedge maze.

Trivia[]
- Their AI shares similar behavior to the Boos from Super Mario.
- The Gold Watchers were originally all made of stone. This was changed so only the lifeless versions were stone. In the Enhanced Version however, all Gold Watchers are made of gold, even the lifeless ones.
- The Gold Watchers are created by the use of a ring.
- They could represent Scopophobia, the fear of being watched or followed by someone.
- In Crazy Carnevil, alongside Agatha and the Clown Gremlins, they have cutout versions of themselves as an audience.
- The Gold Watchers can actually move when being observed as evident by their jumpscares; the "red light green light" behavior is merely a strategy they use to sneak up to their victims.
