Moon Goons (more commonly known as "Goons") are a recurring hostile species from the Fleischer Studios cartoon, Popeye the Sailor Man. They are a species of tall, slightly hairy, big-nosed alien creeps who came to Earth from the Moon and currently live on Goon Island, where they forbid humans from entering. The goons are led by The Sea Hag, who enslaved them all to do her evil bidding. They first appeared in the episode "Goonlan'".
Despite being a mostly villainous species, arguably the most well-known goon in the series is the heroic character, Alice the Goon, who rebelled against the Sea Hag as a young child and pursued a life of good.
Biography[]
In "Goonland", Popeye went to Goon Island to look for his long-lost father, Poopdeck Pappy. When he got to the island, he noticed there was a big skull rock on the island had a warning on it, saying that humans weren't allowed on Goon Island. Popeye ignored this warning and continued his adventure on the island anyway. Popeye sneaked up behind a goon and followed him closely behind until he led him to the main society, where all the goons were walking around and living their lives. Popeye disguised himself as a goon so that he could sneak in and find Pappy. Popeye's disguise had most of the goons fooled, but shortly after Popeye found Pappy and was sadly rejected by him, a police goon found and captured Popeye. Popeye fought the police goon and the police goon tried to bat Popeye down but Popeye kept tricking the police goon into batting down his own men. Eventually, the police goon finally smacked Popeye and took him away. Pappy noticed this and escaped prison to go save his son by snatching some spinach and breaking out. Pappy found Popeye, tied to the ground and saw that the goons were on a cliff high above him and were trying to push a boulder down on him to crush him. Pappy punched the boulder when it was in mid-air, which sent it flying back up to the top of the cliff, where it crushed the goons. After Popeye and Pappy happily reunited, a bunch of other goons came by and the worked together to beat them all down.

Trivia[]
- Although the goons made their television debut in the episode "Goonland", they had actually been around much longer than that, making their first appearance, overall in the 1933 comic book, "Plunder Island".
- Bud Sagendorf, the writer/artist who originally came up with the goons, claimed that he'd always imagined the Goons to be an alien species that originally came from the moon.
