Gorgo (known as Lord Mazo in Japan) is the secondary antagonist of the Golden Bat franchise specifically the Anime, stated to have originally debuted in the original Kamishibai era (see below). He is Dr. Zero's right hand man, scientist, and abusive leader of the Nazo Army.
According to a list of Takeo Nagamatsu’s recollections, Gorgo in some form, originally debuted in the Kamishibai era as one of Dr. Zero‘s henchmen like he is in the Anime adaptation (though it’s unknown in which story), although due to most of the original Golden Bat era being lost and obscure to this day, no pictures of him have been found. He was never seen again afterwards but finally returned in the 1967 animated series after a long time absence.
In the 1967 anime adaptation, he was voiced by the late Kenji Utsumi in the original Japanese version who also voiced Shenron in Dragon Ball Z and both Duke of Soleanna and the narrator of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and who also played Dolmanstein of the Doraemon franchise who was also played by Dr. Zero's original Japanese actor, Ushio Shima in the original film. The identity of his voice actor in the English dub is currently unknown.
Overview[]
Gorgo is Dr. Zero's right hand man and the leader of the Nazo Army. He is a hard-working, hands-on person who participates in tasks that would normally be left to subordinates, such as securing and managing labor, searching for targets, and conducting sabotage operations in enemy territory. He is also an excellent scientist, inventing various and sometimes more useful weapons than those of his superior. The organization's success is largely due to his efforts, such as accurately advising retreat when the organization is in crisis (mainly with Phantaman), and skillfully placating his impatient boss Dr. Zero.
Gorgo also has some humor, such as performing songs to his subordinates while searching for him, and saying a series of clever lines during construction. However, there are many cases where they fail due to their lack of skill at critical points. Even if he fails, he will not be executed by Zero, and he has the ability to survive even if he is attacked or shot down by Phantoma. Even though he is in a position where his efforts are not rewarded, his loyalty to Zero is genuine. However, he is very incompetent at defeating the extremely powerful Phantaman whom the doctor wants vanquished so badly so he can rule the universe without the golden skeleton foiling his plans. When his failure-intolerant boss threatens to kill him (among his colleagues) via zapping them with his laser eye, Gorgo always begs Zero to spare his life which turns overall successful, lucky for him. While Zero is very abusive and bossy towards him and (especially) the others, Gorgo is occasionally shown to treat his colleagues a similar way his boss treats him.
Appearance[]
Since no known pictures of him in the Kamishibai era have been found, his original physical appearance remains unknown in this original work.
In the anime version, Gorgo is a tall lean elderly albeit fit humanoid creature of an unknown species resembling a human, he has yellow scleria with black pupils, baige skin and medium stone gray hair swifting down his forehead. For attire he wears a redish pink overcoat with red accents and triangular cuts at the bottom, along with a blue lined shirt underneath with matching blue pants and shoes.
Personality[]
Gorgo is a cowardly man who is terrified of his intimidating leader Dr. Zero. While being extremely incompetent by failing to defeat the Golden Bat much to the annoyance of Zero, he always begs the doctor to spare his life, which overall turns out successful. Despite being a dimwit, Gorgo is a genius, inventing various and sometimes useful weapons. Gorgo is in addition shown to be abusive and bossy towards his colleagues similar to the way his angry boss does to them all.
Trivia[]
