The story of Gorilla Grodd from DC Comics.
Pre-Flashpoint[]
Modern Age[]
Grodd was once a normal gorilla until one day an alien spaceship (which would later be retconned into a meteorite instead) crashed into his African home. Imbued with great intelligence by the ship's pilot, Grodd, and his future rival Solovar also gaining telepathic and telekinetic powers, the tribe of gorillas near the crash site built the super-advanced Gorilla City under the leadership of the alien. Upon being discovered by explorers, Grodd used his powers to force one to kill the alien and took over as leader of Gorilla City, plotting to conquer the world next. Solovar, however, manages to contact the Flash telepathically and warns him of Grodd's scheme, thus allowing the hero to stop him. Grodd would then continue to plague Flash and his allies for years afterward. Early in his career, Grodd took desperate measures to escape from a Gorilla City prison by taking an experimental pill that would transfer his mind into a random object. He became a human named William Dawson---and the ironic job of managing a performing chimpanzee act for a circus sideshow. The transformation wore off after a year or so, but "Dawson" still hated The Flash and a failed attack landed him in a human prison.
Eventually, Grodd and Hector Hammond joined forces to fight the Flash and Green Lantern. In The Flash #178, The Flash (Wally West) takes on Grodd as the gorilla launches his most violent attack yet on Keystone City. During the "Salvation Run" storyline, Gorilla Grodd is trapped on a prison planet with other supervillains, and he seemingly kills fellow gorilla Monsieur Mallah and the Brain.
Post-Flashpoint[]
The New 52[]
When the Speed Force struck a tribe of gorillas deep in the jungle of Africa, it sped up their intelligence and evolution. They then created their kingdom, Gorilla City, and worshiped the "light" (their name for the Speed Force). Grodd became their king moments before the Flash first arrived. He also killed his father and ate his brains, believing they would give him his father's power. The Flash eventually escaped Gorilla City and defeated Grodd, who was buried under the rubble of an ancient temple during their fight. He was dug out by General Silverback and soon reclaimed his control over Gorilla City, leading the gorillas on an invasion of Central City. Grodd nearly killed the Flash, who was only saved when the gorilla known as Solovar risked his own life to rescue the hero.
The Flash later took Grodd into the Speed Force and defeated him in battle, leaving Grodd trapped there. Grodd was later freed by the Crime Syndicate and found he now had increased psionic abilities. Arriving in Central City just as his fellow gorillas were making peace with the humans, Grodd took over, killing anyone, gorilla or human, who opposed him. With the Flash missing (seemingly killed by the Crime Syndicate), Gorilla Grodd renamed Central City the new "Gorilla City". When the Rogues refused to join the Crime Syndicate's new order, the Syndicate sent Grodd and other supervillains to kill them. The Rogues won the day, however, with Mirror Master trapping Grodd and his fellow villains in the mirror dimension.
DC Rebirth[]
During his time in obscurity, Grodd would escape the penal dimension he was left in only to contract an incurable illness whose fatal effects could only be stymied by the Speed Force. To that end, he would reach out and make Raijin; a former S.T.A.R Labs employee obsessed with the Speed Force, his subordinate. They would later go on to found the criminal organization of Black Hole backed by Gorilla City technology in his benefactor name; along with fellow scientist Dr. Carver. Eventually, Black Hole recruits Meena as the Negative Flash and employs Multiplex by imparting speed force energies unto him. Grodd used them to attack the Flash and all of Central City, kick-starting another Speed Force Storm. With their help, he then steals Barry's powers. The Flash later cured Grodd's condition and the Gorilla City Guard arrived to take Grodd away as their captive.
When Barry regains his powers, Grodd takes control of his fellow speedsters. Grodd later partnered with Poison Ivy to destroy the "world of man", only to be stopped this time by the rampaging behemoth known as Damage. Grodd continued to find nefarious partners in crime, harnessing the Still Force and teaming with Lex Luthor to help form the Legion of Doom and free the evil creator of the Multiverse, Perpetua.
Infinite Frontier[]
Gorilla Grodd controlled people to plan to take over, and Gorilla Gregg was working with his uncle, Gorilla Grodd, to take over the world. Grodd's plan involves placing a mast on the Empire State Building, which would allow him to extend his telepathic reach across New York. Grodd is behind bars (over 24 hours to escape). he gets a letter from his nephew Gregg, proving in a letter to his uncle that he is the future gorilla kind's needs. All In[]
We Are Yesterday[]
Gorilla Grodd's conquest of Gorilla City resulted in the capture of Solovar and Hal Jordan. Thankfully, Batman, The Flash, and Superman came to the rescue, successfully saving Gorilla City from Grodd's clutches. While searching for Grodd, Barry encounters him surrounded by a force field, which leads to a realization by Batman about Grodd's true intentions. Grodd attempts a mind transfer to take over Superman's body, and he succeeds. Using Superman's body, he launches an attack on the military, but Barry intervenes, recognizing that even Grodd has overlooked Kryptonians' weakness to green Kryptonite.
Grodd then uses a laser beam from Titano, channeling the Kryptonite and weakening Superman. Seizing the moment, Flash manages to grab Grodd's body while in Superman's form and breaks free of Grodd's control, ultimately defeating him. Grodd is taken into custody, but soon, a time-travel wormhole sends his future self back to take over his past self, setting him on a new path. With his past self under his control, Grodd devises a plot to take down the Justice League, needing a perfect, gullible hero to carry it out. He decides to use the name AirWave.
Grodd and the Legion of Doom engage in a fierce battle against the Justice League, ultimately teleporting them into the timestream and scattered across the multiverse. With the heroes out of the way, Grodd outlines his ambitions to the Legion, explaining that in the future, the Omega Rift—a cosmic being—has caused fractures in time and space, leaving chaos in its wake. He reveals that he possesses a fragment of immense power, originating from Apokolips, which could make him godlike if used correctly.
As Grodd discusses his plan, he's suddenly ambushed by Scarecrow, allowing Lex Luthor to snatch the power fragment for himself. However, the fragment proves unstable and explodes, injuring Luthor's eye. Unfazed, Grodd had anticipated this and had created a replica of the fragment, illustrating his cunning nature. He reveals that he needed the entire Legion to reach this point, as their combined abilities were essential for his ulterior motives.
Using the Omega Energy, Grodd glimpses into the immediate future and sees that AirWave is orchestrating events from the shadows. He warns the Legion that the timeline and multiverse are on the brink of collapse and that drastic measures are needed to stabilize them. Just as Grodd thinks he can regain control, AirWave reemerges, alive and ready to confront the villains. He orders Grodd to stand down and take responsibility for the chaos they’ve unleashed on the Justice League and the multiverse. The stakes are now higher than ever as the fate of all timelines hangs in the balance.
In the final battle between the Legion of Doom and the Justice League, the heroes faced off against their foes with determination. Having taken down most members of the villainous group, the Justice League focused all their efforts on Grodd. This was crucial, as Grodd had infused himself with Omega energy, which greatly enhanced his powers while Air Wave warned them about the dangers of Grodd's new abilities, the heroes devised a plan. They worked together to pin Grodd down, using Air Wave's powers to counteract the Omega energy that Grodd had harnessed. With focused teamwork and strategy, they managed to not only stop Grodd's plans but also revert him to his normal state. Now, Grodd was in custody, and the Justice League had once again prevailed against the forces of evil.
