Gorman Lennox is the main antagonist of the 1992 thiller movie White Sands.

He was portrayed by Mickey Rourke, who also played Charles Jericho in Driv3r, Terry Higgins in True Crime: New York City, Whiplash in Iron Man 2 and Hyperion in Immortals.

Biography[]

Gorman Lennox is first mentioned when the hero and protagonist Ray Dolezal has a suitcase robbed and is told to meet the man in question in Santa Fe. Dolezal poses as Spencer, a man found dead in the county where Ray works as a sheriff. They meet each other in a restaurant where Lennox is talking about art with the waitress, Roz Kincaid. Lennox introduces Dolezal as another artist and suggests he examines Kincaid's artwork. Dolezal buys them but throw them away while they go out. Lennox is offended a bit but tells to move anyway, as they have a busy schedule. In the evening, Lennox and Dolezal are in another restaurant, meeting Lennox's associate Lane Bodine. Gorman tells he trusts Dolezal totally since he brings him $500.000 as promised (Dolezal retrieved the suitcase alongside with Spencer's body). Dolezal learns that the money is used to arm left-wing freedom fighters in South America. Then Lennox and him go to meet the arm dealers via helicopter. The arms dealers make a demonstration the guns for Dolezal and Lennox, but ask for an additional $250,000 due to unforeseen expenses.

The duo meet Lane in her house. Lennox asks to have $125.000, no matter if she has to cross some line to have it. In exchange, she'll receive 10% of the money to help the South Americans. Lane accepts and Lennox goes to El Paso. Lane eventually falls in love with Dolezal. She prefers him much than the unstable Lennox.

When Lennox meets Dolezal again, they are in the desert and Lennox has two Internal agents in the trunk of his car. He also reveals he knows Dolezal is not Spencer, as Lennox is truly a CIA agent who wants the arms deal done because it will ensure the survival of a military industrial complex. After this, Lennox shoots the two agents and informs Dolezal that he has kidnapped Lane and keeps her as a hostage. Gorman thinks Lane has hidden the money somewhere and wants Dolezal to find it and meet Lennox at a deserted military base in the White Sands National Park.

Having found the money, Ray waits for him the next day. Lennox arrives and tells that he lets Lane at the base entrance. Dolezal has placed the briefcase in the abandoned building, telling the corrupt CIA the money is there. Lennox believes him but when he enters to recuperate the money, Greg Meeker, another corrupt official who was tied by Dolezal, shoots him to death.

Trivia[]

  • Rourke attempted to quit smoking while filming, in preparation for his professional boxing career. At the end of the movie, he started smoking again, exactly like his character does, much to Dafoe's surprise.
