~ Takemura to V

Goro Takemura (Japanese: 竹村 五郎, Takemura Goro) is a major character in the 2020 video game Cyberpunk 2077. He is the former bodyguard of Saburo Arasaka and member of the Arasaka Corporation's security division. Goro allies with the mercenary V during the events of the game to expose and depose Yorinobu Arasaka for his murder of Saburo.

He is voiced by Rome Kanda.

Biography[]

Background[]

Goro Takemura was born and raised in the slums of Chiba-11, the poorest district in all of Japan. His father worked full-time in a kitchen, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother, who would tell him stories about yokai. Like many children in the area, Goro idolized the Arasaka Corporation and would wash his clothes in Chiba-11's polluted canals, due to a rumor that the company would only accept the cleanest children. Eventually, he was successfully recruited into Arasaka's military division, eventually being promoted into their special forces and being offered an education at Arasaka Academy, where he graduated at the top of his class. Goro was personally selected by Saburo Arasaka to act as his personal bodyguard out of a hundred candidates, accompanying him both at home and aboard. He was outfitted with one-of-a-kind befitting his new position, including an endoskeleton. He would personally train cyberninja Sandayo Oda, who would become to bodyguard of Saburo's daughter, Hanako.

Cyberpunk 2077[]

Goro accompanies Saburo to confront his son, Yorinobu Arasaka, on the theft of a Relic prototype. He detects the thieves V and Jackie Welles, though is dismissed before he can expose their presence to the group. After Saburo is killed by Yorinobu, Goro is one of the first security personnel on the scene and, despite suspicions on his death, follows Yorinobu's orders.

Eventually tracking down Dexter DeShawn, Goro forces him to recover a recently revived V and kills him. He and the mercenary work together to fend off assassins sent after them by Yorinobu. Goro spends time monitoring V's recovery and learns of the Relic being implanted into their system, overriding their consciousness with an engram of Johnny Silverhand. After they fully recover, Goro offers to get V Arasaka's best surgeons to remove the Relic if they testify that Yorinobu was responsible for Saburo's murder.

After a failed attempt to acquire Oda's assistance, Goro decides to personally meet with Hanako Arasaka. Both he and V work on preparations to meet her during Night City's doshi parade. During the event, Goro kidnaps Hanako and brings her to a secure location so that V can safely testify to her. During the subsequent recovery by Adam Smasher, Goro fights with Arasaka security. V can chose to help him escape, while abandoning him will lead to his death.

If V decides to save him, Goro later appears during their attempt to usurp Yorinobu, during which he learns that Saburo lives on as an engram. He and V then work together to battle through Yorinobu's loyalists and security, including Smasher. After their success, Goro later visits V aboard the Arasaka's orbital space station to reveal the damage done to their body by the Relic is irreversable, offering them a chance to survive by becoming an engram. If V accepts, Goro will tell them to visit him Kagewa after they gain a new body, promising to treat them to some "real food"; if V refuses, Goro begs them to reconsider, but V retorts that they will not sacrifice the one thing Goro never had, freedom, leaving Goro distraught that his friend has condemned themselves to death. In other scenarios, Goro learns that V has betrayed Hanako to storm Mikoshi by themselves or with help from other allies, devastating Arasaka in the process. During the credits, he sends them a bitter message, during which he reveals his intentions to commit seppuku, which he ends by telling V to rot in hell.

If V decides to have the Relic removed by NUSA surgeons after Phantom Liberty is completed, Goro will send them a message after they awaken from their 2-year coma. He reveals to V that after they disappeared, he and Hanako unsuccessfully stormed Arasaka Tower by themselves, leading to Hanako's death and Yorinobu subsquently framing Goro for his sister's murder. Having spent tha past 2 years a fugitive living in squalor, Goro has finally disavowed the corporation that he devoted his life towards, but is deeply bitter at V for abandoning him when he needed them most. Remarking that "good, strong medicine is bitter to the mouth", Goro ends his message by declaring "You were very strong medicine, V."

Trivia[]

  • Although Goro does not serve in an antagonistic role during Cyberpunk 2077, his goals only serve the Arasaka Corporation and blindly follow the will of Saburo Arasaka.
  • Takemura was originally conceived as a female character named Ayumi Gozen, who would have originally played a more villainous role in the game. This was changed after CD Projekt Red decided that they wanted to show a more human side to the Arasaka Corporation.
