Governor Griffon (first name unknown, only assumed to be Grimm) is the main antagonist of the 2004 video game Red Dead Revolver. He is the archenemy of the game's protagonist, Red Harlow.

Biography

Red Dead Revolver

Nothing is known about Griffon's past other than at some point, he befriended Nate Harlow and the two of them became business partners. At some point, before the events of the game, the two discovered a gold mine in Bear Mountain and agreed to share the wealth fairly. To signify their newfound wealth, they each got themselves made Scorpion revolvers, extremely powerful guns capable of shooting off a person's limb, according to Nate only two of them exist in the whole world, and he and Griffon had them both. Later, Griffon tries to cross the Rio Grande river into Mexico, and is at the mercy of General Diego. Griffon, fearing for his life, convinces Diego to let him live in exchange for them becoming partners as he knows of the gold up in Bear Mountains. Diego agrees, thus severing Griffon's partnership with Nate Harlow. Diego then sends Colonel Daren and some outlaws, including Smitty, to kill Nate Harlow and his family, and while Daren succeeds in killing Nate and his wife, Red Harlow escapes, shooting off Daren's arm in the process.

Later in the game, Griffon becomes elected as the Governor of Mississippi and he sends some men to destroy Annie Stoakes' ranch and home as punishment for refusing to sell her land to him, however Griff's hirde goons are stopped and killed, including the Longhorn brothers: Holstein Hal and Luke. Nevertheless, Griffon and Diego still use slave labor to mine their gold and even Diego takes Red captive, but Red escapes with the help of his cousin Shadow Wolf, and the Buffalo Soldier. When the soldier goes to Griff's mansion tell Griffon of Diego and his evil deeds, he admits that he knew about it the entire time as Diego is his business partner and takes the Buffalo Soldier captive once again by Mr. Kelley and Jay and Oswald Cornet. Red eventually kills Diego and Daren, thus putting an end to the slave labor and gold mining, making Griffon lose a lot of revenue.

Red then comes back to Brimstone to participate in a battle royale, however is stopped in the last round when Griffon shows up with Oswald and Jason Cornet and Red recognizes him as Nate's sellout and tries to have him killed but fails. Red eventually tracks down Griffon into his mansion along with Miss Stoakes and Jack Swift and kills him on the rooftop after freeing Buffalo (who got damaged or injured in the process thanks to Griff), finally avenging his family and giving the bounty money to Stoakes and Buffalo, while Jacky dies at the hands of the Cornet brothers.

Red Dead Redemption

Griffon can be mentioned in campfire stories throughout the game, mostly about how Red got his revenge on Griffon and how Griff used to ride with Nate and later Diego.

Personality

Griffon is a cold, sadistic, humorous but uncaring man who is motivated by his own interests, greed and nothing else. He didn't hesitate to sell out his partner just to save himself, he had no remorse for it either, boasting about how he only regrets that he wasn't there to kill Red which makes him a double-crosser. However, despite that cowardly and heinous betrayal, Griffon is capable of standing his own. When Red killed most of his men, instead of begging for his life like Diego did and like he did in the beginning of the game, Griff challenged Red to a duel, even though Red has bested his greatest assassins; Mr. Kelley and Jason Cornet in a one-on-one duel. Thusly, Griff did not die in disgrace, so to speak.

Trivia

  • On beta versions of the game and some other versions, he was a Mayor.
