~ Grégoire to the Black Eagles. |
Grégoire von Varley is a minor antagonist in the 2019 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses and a major antagonist in its 2022 spin-off sequel Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.
He is the abusive and greedy father of Bernadetta von Varley, the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Adrestian Empire, and the lord of House Varley. While not seen very often in the first game, his impact on his daughter was significant and monstrous. He would later make his appearance in the second game, where he would serve as a major antagonist in both the Azure Gleam and Golden Wildfire routes and a supporting character in the Scarlet Blaze route.
He is voiced by Reggie Marcus in English, while he is voiced by Satoshi Mikami in Japanese.
Biography[]
Grégoire during the era of Three Houses was a noble of the Adrestian Empire, where he was an elite serving as the Minister of Religous Affairs. He would father a daughter, Bernadetta von Varley, whom he inflicted sustained abuse and cruelty towards her entire life in a bid to turn her into a "good submissive wife" that he could marry off to a rich noble. When Yuri Leclerc attempted to assassinate Bernadetta after befriending her, Grégoire caught him in the act and had his men brutally beat the boy to the brink of death. The abuse Bernadetta endured at her father's hands caused her to develop crippling social anxiety, resulting in her isolating herself in her room and many dark rumors spreading about her, driving away any potential suitors, including Ferdinand von Aegir. Due to this turn of events, Grégoire's abuse to his daughter ceased, instead treating her with cold indifference.
When Edelgard von Hresvelg becomes Emperor, one of her first actions is to place Count Varley and many other corrupt nobles under house arrest. Following the Empire's defeat in Verdent Wind and Silver Snow, Byleth has the choice of either upholding the former Minsiter's house arrest, or exiling him from the continent.
Personality[]
Grégoire is the textbook definition of a greedy and morally bankrupt noble. The only things he cares about are his wealth and status, and will do virtually anything to maintain and increase both. Planning to wed his daughter off for this very purpose, he subjected Bernadetta to monstrous cruelty throughout her life, trying to "train" her to become the perfect wife for a man of nobility but in reality subjected her to constant psychological abuse. This became so vile his own wife arranged the kidnapping of their daughter, having her sent off to the monastery in order to keep him away from her. As time passed, his malice towards her instead turned to cold indifference, but that still did not stop him from willingly choosing to try and sacrifice her in order to benefit from it. His treatment of her was so bad it significantly damaged her psychologically, inflicting the girl with crippling anxieties and fears. The only time he ever showed that he cared for Bernadetta was when he saved her from Yuri's assassination attempt, and even then he was more concerned about losing her as a potential source of wealth than he was about her well being.
Ironically, Grégoire possesses very similar personality traits to his own daughter. He is shown to be very paranoid and nervous, often assuming the worse regarding people's intentions with him; however, given that his position as bishop of the Southern Church makes his a target for assassination, his paranoia is not without merit. Ultimately, while Bernadetta is able to show true courage by facing her fears head on in order to protect her friends, Grégoire proves himself to be nothing more than a loathsome, spineless coward who cares only about himself.

Trivia[]
- Due to his extremely abusive treatment of Bernadetta, Grégoire is considered one of the most loathsome antagonists in the Fire Emblem franchise.
- In fact, in Three Hopes, Grégoire could die in the Scarlet Blaze route, but his death doesn't even result in failure, which left many players who wanted him dead very happy. He can also receive karmic justice if he's killed by Bernadetta and/or Yuri in the Azure Gleam route.
