Grand Duke Wilfred is the main antagonist of the story "The Five Hundred Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins", by Dr. Seuss. He is the spoiled and psychopathic nephew of King Derwin.
Biography[]
Bartholomew Cubbins was unable to remove his hat for the king, as every time he tried, a new hat replaced it. He was taken to the palace in order to force him to take off his hat. When Grand Duke Wilfred found out, he tried to shoot it off with a bow and arrow, which didn't work.
After multiple attempts to remove the hat failed, Wilfred suggested to King Derwin to have Bartholomew beheaded. Bartholomew was sent to be beheaded but the executioner refused, as one must have his hat removed to be beheaded. When Bartholomew returned, Wilfred demanded to have Bartholomew pushed off the highest tower, which King Derwin agreed to. As Bartholomew walked up the steps, he tried removing his hat. The new hats subsequently became fancier and more expensive. When they got to the top of the tower, King Derwin was impressed by Bartholomew's fancy hat. He wanted to spare Bartholomew but Wilfred tried to push Bartholomew off the tower anyway. Derwin stopped him and spanked him for being disobedient.
Trivia[]
Wildred is very similar to Joffrey Baratheon. Both are spoiled aristocrats, closely related to the king. Both are psychopathic and enjoy murdering people. The king knows they are psychopaths, but does little to stop their violent tendencies.
