Granthem Du'Met, also known by his birth name Hector Waylon Munday, is the main antagonist of The Devil in Me, the fourth and final installment of Season 1 of The Dark Pictures Anthology.

He is a serial killer who is the owner of a replica of the World's Fair Hotel, also known as the Murder Castle. Luring a group of filmmakers into his castle to record an episode for the Architect of Murders TV series, he watches them through the cameras and even sets up traps in an attempt to murder his guests, but they manage to dodge all the traps and finally encounter him.

However, if both Kate and Mark are captured, he makes up a deal with them and, depending on the player's choice, they can both die or survive, but if they do survive, they would die in a different manner, which makes the choice of the deal a dead end.

Appearance[]

Granthem Du'Met's appearance is very similar to H.H. Holmes, but he wears a white mask on his face to hide his identity. He wears a hat similar to that of Holmes's.

Personality[]

Du'Met is depicted as a sadistic killer who kills anyone who comes to his island, his violent behavior coming from the abuse he received from Lucinda, his own mother. He also enjoys killing his victims with various methods and, being a former agent of the FBI, is also very sociopathic, loving when his victims kill each other. Despite his sadistic behavior, he has been shown to had a bond with his mother, who was passing away due to lung cancer, though he ultimately killed her.

Biography[]

Background[]

Born on June 11th, 1965 in Silver Springs Maryland, Hector Waylon Munday's life was very abusive when his mother Lucinda was left behind by her lover Clarence, which forced her to take care of the young Hector on her own, but she abuses him to the point it even scares the school staff and the doctors.

Successfully obtaining a degree of psychology in 1988, he then went on to become an agent of the FBI, leading to the arrest and capture of serial killer Manny Sherman. During an interview in 1997, he is surprised by his explanation and obsession of 19th century serial killer H.H. Holmes. However, his mother was suffering from lung cancer, causing Hector's sanity to decompose due to Sherman's influence alongside it. Hector eventually killed his own mother in 1998, hiding her death as natural causes.

However, the police would soon realize that he was the main responsible of the Chicago murders, which leads to Hector hiding away from them, faking his own demise and taking away another victim. Later, when he was found by the authorities, he burns the warehouse down, tricking the police into thinking Hector died in the fire (even though it was just a random corpses that he used as bait to lure the police into thinking it would be his corpse). After his fake demise, Hector changed his identity to eventually become Granthem Du'Met. He would then steal corpses, like Manny Sherman and his own mother, and turn them into robots.

Sometime before 2017, he started building a replica of the famous World's Fair Hotel, which was the place where H.H. Holmes murdered all of his victims, in place of the Colombus Health Spa, after gaining the ownership of Lake Michigan in 2011. After the hotel was complete, he would fill it with death traps and secret paths, similar to Holmes's Murder Castle. In 2022, he lures a group of filmmakers into his location in order to film an episode of their series, leading to the events of the game.

October 2022[]

After he drove the crew to the island, he introduces himself as the groundskeeper of the H.H. Holmes museum, also known as a replica of the Murder Castle. Little do the crew know, however, is that Du'Met watches their every move with his cameras. Eventually, he uses an inhaler which either cuts a piece of Erin's hair or brutally impale her through the jaw, instantly killing her.

He then encounters Charlie after stepping on the pressure plate, holding a knife to his nose, cutting it if he doesn't back away. The scythe would still activate and kill the groundskeeper, but once the lights go off, they are nowhere to be seen. Over the course of the story, Du'Met would continue watching the crew as they either die or survive one by one, eventually leading, if captured, to a deal between him, Kate and Mark. If Mark accepts the deal, Du'Met would shoot both of them after the ferry they were on went back to the island. If the deal is declined, Mark would be poisoned by gas and Kate will be dissolved by acid.

Death[]

However, if they don't get captured, the survivors escape the island. Du'Met manages to get on the boat they were escaping on and attempts to murder them with an axe, but Mark manages to defend himself, knocking the mask off his face and putting it back on. However, Mark is almost impaled by Du'Met, as Jamie then attacks Du'Met, but is easily knocked away. Mark then breaks free and tosses the anchor on him, missing at first but eventually stabbing him in the torso. Afterwards, the anchor's chain gets caught in the boat's propeller and is pulled away into the water, as the boat then crashes on a rock and explodes, killing Du'Met.

Aftermath[]

Despite his death, an unknown figure, now wearing his mask and using his name, would enable a vacation for another group of people, a young female student and her friends, after a video about a hotel in Lake Michigan became viral, later causing them to be captured and presumably murdered.

Trivia[]

  • He shares the same model as H.H. Holmes, but with a white mask added to his face.
  • At the end of the game, The Curator would notice his new name, Granthem Du'Met, on the paper showing the names of "Hector Munday", "Henry Howard Holmes" and "Herman Mudgett", causing him to become anxious and tearing off the paper out of the book, as another figure would have taken his place after his death.
  • If the camera is unlocked in debug mode, he can be seen without his mask.
