Insane? Ha ha. That's funny. Are you saying that you yourself are perfectly sane? Are you even sure that you're on the right side?
~ Gravity Antonion asking Axl about his morality and sanity.

Gravity Antonion, also known in Japan as Gravitate Ant-Onion, is a boss and a minor antagonist in Mega Man X8. He was a New Generation Reploid who was tasked with researching gravity. Antonion had his cortex upgraded to handle his research equipment, and this made him very smart. His weapon is the Squeeze Bomb, which fires a small ball that becomes a black hole. Earthrock Trilobyte is weak to this weapon.

He was voiced by Hayata Ishida in Japanese and Roger Rhodes in English.

Character description[]

Personality[]

Gravity Antonion is well respected in his field, as the lead researcher of his team as he is an extremely calm, polite, intellectual, intelligent and analytical scientist, but is more brash and aggressive in battle.

He also rejected the labels given to him by others, be it positive, neutral and negative, such as "incredible scientist", "great scientist" and "Maverick" (but he doesn't mind being called "genius" in Axl's case), and believed that the world and the Maverick Hunters were arrogant to do so. He truly believed in Sigma's cause, agreeing that the world is evil and needed a reset. He also believed that if anyone couldn't understand their plan and tried to interfere, they needed to be destroyed.

Appearance[]

Gravity Antonion takes his design from a soldier ant. He has a pair of antennae that sprout from his head and a red, bulbous abdomen on his behind, and mandibles surrounding his mouth.

His Weapon[]

Gravity Antonion uses the Squeeze Bomb, Juuhazan, and the Spiral Magnum for his weaponry.

Squeeze Bombs are small dark purple balls that slowly grow. Any foe that gets in their way will be hurt. Charging a Squeeze Bomb creates a giant vortex that nullifies projectiles. X can get his hands on the weapon, whose charged version is similar to Gravity Antonion's version, which just restricts movement.

Zero uses the Juuhazan, which seems to be based on the cube bludgeon that Gravity can swing with his mandibles. His saber glows with energy, and he swings it overhead. The Juuhazan have some start lag due to its charge-up, but deals hefty damage.

Axl gets his hands on the Spiral Magnum. The missiles that are launched by this gun can pierce enemies and terrain, damaging the former on their way.

Earthrock Trilobyte is weak to all three of these weapons, which can blow off his armor suit instantly, and although basically any attack can blow off his armor, the Squeeze Bomb, Juuhazan, and the Spiral Magnum's missiles can destroy the armor outright, preventing him from replenishing his defense. Yet ironically, fully-charged Squeeze Bombs don't hurt him at all.

Biography[]

Gravity makes his lair in his fortress, Primrose, which is built on top of his old laboratory. In order to reach Gravity Antonion, the players have to manipulate the gravity to make their way to a green portal that leads to the next room. Gravity Antonion dwells in the last room.

Vile V may appear as the mid-boss, but if not, a puzzle that features moving blocks takes his place.

Battle[]

First Phase[]

Gravity has several moves at his disposal. One of his attacks has him summon a block above his head. He will then proceed to throw this cube at the heroes. For another attack, Gravity may summon a black hole that sucks the heroes in. However, this only restricts movement, unlike how X uses it. Gravity may also make a hammer from some of his cubes and swing it, rotate the gravity by running up his room's wall, or spitting acid out of his mouth. Gravity is weak to the weapons of Dark Mantis, due to darkness having an absence of weight and being purely unaffected by gravity, causing Antonion to be knocked onto his own back.

Second Phase[]

Upon losing half his health, Gravity Antonion will summon a storm of cubes that rains down from high like a meteor shower. This phase ends after ten seconds.

Final Phase[]

This starts after the last cube from Gravity Antonion's second phase drops. Gravity will continue using his attacks from his first phase, but can also use two cubes from his cube rain attack. This form, like in his first phase, is weak to all of Dark Mantis's weapons.

Upon defeat, Gravity Antonion surrenders his Squeeze Bomb.

Dialogue[]

Pre-battle[]

Versus Axl[]

  • Axl: Antonion... You used to be such a genius. Have you gone insane? What are you planning?
  • Gravity Antonion: (amused) Insane? Ha ha. That's funny. Are you saying that you yourself are perfectly sane? Are you even sure that you're on the right side?
  • Axl: I'm pretty sure. It's not too hard to tell good from evil. That much I know for sure.
  • Gravity Antonion: Ha! I couldn't agree more! The problem here is the world we live in. But I plan to fix all that!

Versus Axl after four other Mavericks are beaten[]

  • Axl: Antonion... Has Sigma made you go Maverick?
  • Gravity Antonion: (trollishly) You're the prototype for our new generation of Reploids. Surely, you understand.
  • Axl: (mad) I don't even wanna understand. Sigma is the bad guy here. PERIOD.
  • Gravity Antonion: (childishly) Ha ha ha ha! Fool! Very well, then. I'll destroy you!

In-battle[]

  • Squeeze Bomb: Squeeze Bomb!
  • Cube Drop: Hahahaha!
  • Gyrate: Get ready!
  • Juuhazan: You're weak!
  • Formic Acid: It's all over for you!
  • Overdrive Attack: You won't get in my way!
  • Hit with weakness: Aargh!
  • Defeated: Ugh, aargh, ugh, uugh..

Trivia[]

  • Gravity Antonion is similar to Gravity Beetle due to his gravity theme and insectoid appearance. On top of that, the two have similar attacks as their weapons.
  • Gravity Antonion has only one theme for his stage, with that trait being shared with Avalanche Yeti and Gigabolt Man-O-War.
