Great General Garuda is the secondary antagonist of the anime series Chōdenji Robo Combattler V. He is the front leader of the Campbellians on Earth and the one who spearheads their invasion under the orders of Oreana. He possesses the ability to change his appearance at will from a blue-skinned Campbellian to a humanoid eagle. He is also the Battle team's archenemy.
He was voiced by the late Osamu Ichikawa, who would go on to voice Warchimedes in the same show, Prince Heinel in Voltes V, and Richter in Tōshō Daimos.
Personality[]
Initially, Garuda is depicted as a typical main villain who murders and destroys others for fun and sadism. However, later in the series, he starts to show more honorable qualities, such as caring for his soldiers, giving credits for those who deserve it, and wanting to die honorably rather than live as a coward. Even in the final battle, when his side is losing, he still continues to fight the Battle team instead of surrendering.
Garuda's assistant, Miia, loves him but he doesn't know it. When she sacrifices himself to save him and confesses her feelings, he realizes that he loves her as well.
Upon finding out that he is in fact the latest of Oreana's androids, Garuda is broken at first, but soon recovers and kills Oreana for lying to him. He then fights the Battle team in a honorable fight and compliments it before embracing his death, dying a honorable man.
Biography[]
Garuda is the latest of Oreana's androids, created to be her perfect son and the leader of the Campbellians invasion force on Earth. He was presumably created shortly after she came to Earth, and imbued with fake memories to believe that he was her biological son.
In the 21st century, Oreana and her group finally reawaken and begin to conquer Earth. The group, led by Garuda, attack cities. As a result, five pilots are summoned to pilot the super-electromagnetic robot Combattler V and fight against the Campbellians. From then on, they foil Garuda's plans over again, and he also becomes their greatest enemy. Eventually, fed up with Garuda's constant mistakes, she plans to fire him.
As Garuda's android assistant Miia sacrifices herself to save him, he goes into Oreana's secret lair to repair her. In the process, Garuda finds out that he is in fact the latest of Oreana's androids, created to be her perfect son and the leader of the invasion force, breaking him. Finding Oreana's incomplete slave beast Big Garuda, Garuda finishes it. Afterwards, Oreana reveals her mechanical body housed within her statue and attempts to use a 'Null Electromagnetic Ray' from her forehead to drain the Combattler of its power, but a vengeful Garuda and uses the Big Garuda to destroy half of Oreana's head, killing her.
Afterwards, Garuda fights the Battle team for one last time, and is defeated and killed, but not before complimenting the fight and saying that now he and Miia can be together in death.

Trivia[]
- In Hindu mythology, Garuda was the name of a powerful eagle figure that was said to be the King of the Birds.
- Garuda has inspired some villains of the Robot Romance Trilogy, namely Warchimedes, Prince Heinel and Richter. All four of them were also voiced by Osamu Ichikawa. Interestingly, Garuda himself was inspired by Prince Sharkin from Brave Raideen, who was also voiced by Osamu Ichikawa. In fact, Tadao Nagahama, the director of the Robot Romance Trilogy, directed the second half of Brave Raideen after Yoshiyuki Tomino left.
