Grecker is an antagonist of the 2016 canon comic book miniseries Star Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin, introduced in its second issue and remaining until the final issue. He is a commander of the Closed, a faction of near-humans residing on Carnelion IV, a world outside Republic jurisdiction that was ravaged by civil war. Externally, like the rest of the Closed, Grecker resembles a human, but has three horizontal slits in place of ears. Additionally, he has blue tattoos that are typical of Closed warriors.
Biography[]
Grecker was a member of the Closed, a species of near-humans who immigrated to Carnelion IV alongside humans at some point in the past. Before 32 BBY, a war broke out between the humans, known as the Open, and the Closed, resulting in the destruction of the Carnelian civilization, with both sides blaming each other for the war, survivors driven to the mountains as the cities were filled with toxic gases, forming the Celadon Sea. Grecker became a leader of Closed forces as they continued to fight the Open, despite their tech levels being regressed to primitive levels, resorting to using ballistics, gasbag-powered airships, and blades. However, Grecker, and the rest of the Closed, held some common ground with the Open, namely that he wished to forget the previous civilization, destroying all "skygifts," small relics of the previous civilization, sent by Sera, a Human scavenger living somewhere in the ruins.
In 29 BBY, Sera managed to send a distress signal to the Jedi, believing they were great warriors who would exterminate the Open and Closed. A human Jedi named Obi-Wan Kenobi and his padawan, Anakin Skywalker, arrived on Carnelion IV to respond to it, coming across an airship battle between Grecker and an Open leader named Pran. Grecker managed to shoot down Pran's airship, but she and her assistant, Kolara, were rescued by the Jedi. When Grecker went to attack them again, Obi-Wan cut the gasbag of his airship in half, bringing it down. Grecker managed to jump out, and was saved by Anakin, much to Pran's anger. Grecker and Pran promptly drew guns on each other, but Anakin cut their weapons in half, and Obi-Wan used the Force to disarm them again when they tried to draw knives. When questioned, Grecker accused the Open of creating the Celadon Sea, despite Pran blaming the war on the Closed, and Grecker then told Obi-Wan that they would not survive on the cliff they were all standing on. The Jedi observed that the gondola of Grecker's airship was still intact, while the gasbag of Pran's airship was also intact, but when they offered to build a ship out of the parts, Grecker declared that a combination of Open and Closed technology would be an abomination. However, when the Jedi mentioned getting a signal, Grecker realized that it must have come from Sera, deciding to team up with Pran and the Jedi to finally get rid of Sera, but did not tell the Jedi about his real goals.
After getting into the air again, Grecker spoke with Obi-Wan, noting that Anakin seemed like a good student, and appeared to idolize Obi-Wan. The ship was suddenly attacked by Fishers, mutated humans residing in the ruins, where Grecker stood alongside Obi-Wan in defense of the ship. However, Pran, seeing Anakin's capability to repair technology, promptly kidnaps him, jumping out of the ship alongside Kolara in a glider, before shooting the ship's gasbag. Grecker and Obi-Wan managed to jump to safety, where Grecker began ranting about the treachery of the Open, although Obi-Wan told him it no longer mattered who started the war. As they trudged through the ruins of a Carnelian city, donning gasmasks for protection against the Celadon Sea, they were attacked by Fishers again, but Obi-Wan scared them off with his lightsaber, although Grecker tried to tell him that the Fishers were just unintelligent animals. They soon reached Sera's fortress, where Obi-Wan finally pointed out that Grecker seemed extremely willing to help, even join forces with his sworn enemy, the moment the Jedi mentioned the distress signal, saying that Grecker must know that something is alive in the ruins. Before he could get an answer, the two were attacked by Carnelian dragons, and as Obi-Wan fought them, Grecker shot a flare to attract more Closed soldiers. Sera then opened the door to let them in, prompting Grecker to quickly enter. However, Grecker then ordered Sera to leave Obi-Wan outside, preparing to kill her with his flare gun, but she shot him in the chest first.
While injured, Grecker survived, only getting up after more Closed soldiers arrived. As Obi-Wan confronted the Closed, Grecker ordered them to kill Obi-Wan and destroy the fortress, although Obi-Wan managed to evade them. Then, the Closed were attacked by Open war mechs, rebuilt by Anakin, killing many of them. Obi-Wan ordered Grecker to get his forces to stand down, but Grecker angrily responded that Obi-Wan had no authority on the planet, and that the planet was beyond saving, just before Pran killed Grecker with a war mech.
