Greg is the main antagonist of the indie horror game Crypt, which was created by the YouTuber Valefisk.
He is an unnatural, humanoid monster that resides within the titular crypt. Although passive at first, Greg becomes more aggressive as the player gets closer to escaping.
Appearance[]
Greg is an thin humanoid creature with abnormally long, multi-jointed arms and legs that end in sharp spikes instead of hands or feet. He is entirely naked and completely lacks a face.
Biography[]
As the game lacks a proper story, Greg's origins are completely unknown.
The only thing known told to the player at the start of the game is that they must go into the crypt and reclaim the prize of an unknown third party. When first entering the crypt, Greg is sealed within a large coffin that lies in the center of the entrance hall, next to which is a small altar with an orb on it. Taking the orb awakens Greg, seemingly the orb's protector, who starts to shake his coffin in his attempts to break free.
Near his coffin is a locked door with four locks, the four keys of which are scattered throughout different areas of the crypt: one hidden within a large maze, one locked behind another door that has to be opened with a correct sequence of symbols and the last two located inside a massive hall with movable platforms. In addition, three hidden tomes must be collected for the exit to fully reveal itself.
Once the first key has been collected, returning to the entrance hall will show a now empty coffin. From this point onwards, the player will hear the creature's distinct clicking noises in the distance, following them everywhere. With the second key, Greg will become fully active and stalk the player, but will keep to the shadows. His patience will run out with the collection of the third key however, actively starting to hunt the player throughout the crypt with intent to kill. The crypt's tight corridors and confusing layout gives Greg a distinct advantage, requiring the player to find the last key quickly and escape.
However, even with all four keys, all three tomes, and the sacred orb in hand, the crypt still has one last trick up its sleeve. The exit next to Greg's coffin is a fake. With the crypt dweller now at his most aggressive, the player must make a mad dash to find the real exit, assuming they haven't found it beforehand, unlock it, and escape before Greg can reach them first.

Trivia[]
- Greg, and by extension, Crypt itself, was intentionally designed to be as unfair as possible, with Valefisk himself jokingly calling it a "torture device". Originally, it was impossible to escape the crypt, as the only exit wouldn't open and collecting all four keys caused Greg to make a beeline directly for the player's current position, faster than they could run away. The Steam release made Greg slightly less aggressive and added a way to actually win the game.
- As difficult and cryptic as the game is, there is an even more challenging difficulty that can be activated by enabling "THE GREGGENING" in the options menu. This puts the game into Nightmare Difficulty and spawns several Gregs instead of just one.
- According to the game's creator, Greg is a repurposed human model Valefisk intended to use for a different project. For the game, the model was rotated and its limbs elongated to make him more monstrous.
- Greg always looks directly at the player, regardless of where they currently are.
- Valefisk later included Greg as an enemy in a fanmade, intentionally unfair board game he made for Tabletop Simulator. In the game, any player that draws the "Enter the Crypt Board" card is put into a circular maze, with the goal of making it to the exit before Greg reaches them (who also moves with the roll of a D6). Escaping puts them back to where they were on the main board, while failure resets them back to the start.
