Mr. Manager, do you notice the smell of cockroaches? If I were to leave this room, I'm sure I could find it. And I know people who could cleanse it. But maybe it doesn't bother you. Why is that? Are you used to the smell? Well, not me. I need a clean room to escape it.
~ Gregoire attempting to blackmail Paul Rusesabagina.

Gregoire is the secondary antagonist of the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda. He is an employee of the Hotel Milles Collines and a fierce Hutu supremacist.

He is portrayed by Tony Kgoroge.

Biography[]

When Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana is assassinated, beginning the Rwandan Genocide, Gregoire and his girlfriend promptly take up residence in the Presidential Suite of the Hotel Milles Collines. When Paul Rusesabagina, the hotel's general manager, orders him to vacate the suite, Gregoire threatens to rat out the Tutsis staying at the hotel. This begrudgingly forces Paul to let Gregoire stay in the suite, as well as drink most of the hotel's beer supply.

Gregoire continues to stay in the suite and helps himself to the hotel's amenities and even takes to insulting Paul behind his back, calling him a "cockroach lover" ("cockroach" being a slur used by Hutu supremacists to describe Tutsis) who is "always kissing ass". However, when General Augustin Bizimungu (the head of the Rwandan Army and a close friend of Paul's) is visiting the hotel and witnesses Gregoire slacking off, he is clearly disgusted by his behavior, throwing a bucket of ice on him and ordering him to get back to work.

Once Gregoire has resumed his duties, he initially appears to have come to his senses and apologizes to Paul for his actions. He accompanies Paul to Georges Rutaganda's warehouse to get supplies for the hotel, during which he is clearly uncomfortable with Rutaganda's sadism. As they are returning to the hotel along the river road, they stumble upon the literal hundreds of corpses dumped along the entire road, and both men are clearly disturbed.

Despite this, Gregoire reverts to his previous stance on Tutsis when the UN manages to obtain visas for the Tutsis at the hotel to escape Rwanda. He takes a hotel bus and drives to an Interahamwe roadblock to inform them of the convoy. This ultimately leads to the Interahamwe ambushing the convoy (which contained Paul's wife and children), and a massacre is just narrowly avoided due to the intervention of General Bizimungu.

At the end of the film, the Interahamwe launch a fully-fledged attack on the Milles Collines, and Gregoire is seen with them, actually pointing Paul out to them. Paul only narrowly avoids being killed when General Bizimungu's forces intervene once again. Gregoire is not seen again and his ultimate fate is unknown.
