"Don't waste your sympathy. He won't even have time to know what day of the week it is. As far as he knows he's been sprung. As far as the police and public are concerned, he's on the run again. You can forget Mr. Watts - he's a dead man!".
~ Mantel's most famous quote as he declares that The Firm has resolved to kill their associate Den Watts at all costs.

Gregory Mantel is a fictional character and major antagonist of the British soap opera EastEnders. He appeared as one of the main antagonists in 1988 and 1989, serving as the secondary antagonist in the storyline surrounding the events of Den Watts' apparent death in 1989.

In his storyline, Gregory Mantel was a high-ranking lieutenant of The Firm who often reports directly to his bosses; the unseen Mr. Vinnicombe and co-leader Jack Dalton respectively. He is the one who takes charges of the Firm's objective to eliminate one of their associates, Den Watts, that would ultimately lead to the latter's apparent demise in one of the show's most iconic and famous exits of all-time.

The character was portrayed by Pavel Douglas.

History[]

Gregory Mantel is known to be a well-spoken and sharp-suited East End gangster from Albert Square in Walford. It soon transpired that he is a high-ranking member of Walford's criminal organization known as The Firm. As such, Mantel's status within The Firm is that of a highly decorated lieutenant within the organization who reports directly to his superiors Mr. Vinnicombe and co-leader Jack Dalton. It was later noted that Mantel and Vinnicombe had a trusting companionship as Mantel is strictly loyal to him.

In 1988, Mantel arrives on the square and claims to be involved with "Walford Investments". He plans a partnership with local businessman James Willmott-Brown and attempts to buy into the latter's empire called "The Dagmar". However, Willmott-Brown refused to do so and Mantel responded threatingly. It was then the Dagmar began to suffer financially due to Willott-Brown losing his customers. Soon enough, it turned out that Mantel has done this in order to benefit another wine bar called "Strokes"; the latter business is actually a front that the Firm has been using in order to protect their illegal gambling activites that is being headed by Willmott-Brown's business rival Den Watts, who is affillated with The Firm.

Later on, however, Den angers Mantel and The Firm when he takes unathorized retaliation against Willmott-Brown for raping fellow resident Kathy Beale at one night; Den manipulates Mantel's subordinate, Brad Williams, into launching an arson attack on the Dagmar in an act of payback against Willmott-Brown. Consequently, Den's actions cause the police to begin investigating the Firm's criminal activities along with their involvement in the incident. It was then The Firm resolved to kill Den at all costs, and Mantel is ordered to lead the operation on the organization's new task of eliminating Den for good.
