Grey is a minor antagonist in the 2014 film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the secondary antagonist of the 2017 novel War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations. He is an evolved chimpanzee, and a loyal follower of Koba.

He is voiced by Lee Ross.

History[]

Background[]

Prior to being freed, Grey was living in captivity with other chimps at the San Francisco Zoo.

Grey was one of the apes freed from the zoo during Caesar's Ape Rebellion and assisted in leading the apes out of the city and into Muir Woods. During this time, he met and befriended an ape named Stone, and the two later became close with the ape Koba, and they became his loyal followers.

Grey would settle down in the newly formed Ape Colony led by Caesar and got married to a female ape named Cedar. He served as a soldier in the Ape Army and was a member of the Ape Council.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes[]

Grey and Stone are sent with Koba to follow and scout out the group of surviving humans after their encounter in the woods. During a council meeting, they agreed with Koba that they should kill all of the humans before they become too strong. Caesar instead decided to resolve it more peacefully, and they all marched to the Human's colony in the city, warning them to never come back to the woods.

Later, when Caesar allowed the humans to work on the Dam in the woods, Grey accompanied Koba and Stone to the city, where they discovered the human's large armory full of guns and explosives. Believing that they planned on destroying them, Koba, Grey, and Stone went back to warn Caesar, however, an argument between Caesar and Koba led to a fight, with Caesar beating Koba to a bloody pulp. Grey and Stone both sadly looked at the aftermath of the fight. After the fight, all three of them agreed to not tell anyone else about the guns, as they now had a plan to overthrow Caesar.

Grey again accompanied Koba and Stone to the city. This time, Koba killed two humans, and stole a gun. He later used that gun to shoot Caesar and blame it on the Humans. As this went down, Grey and Stone set fire to the Ape Village using a human's lighter. Koba then led the ape army, including gray, to a viscous assault on the Human's colony. Though they suffered heavy losses, the battle was a success, and all surviving humans were captured.

Grey was present during Caesar and Koba's final standoff on the abandoned high rise. After Dreyfus detonated an explosion that killed many apes, Grey was caught under debris from the explosion. Koba passed by and lifted up the debris to retrieve Grey's gun, before letting it drop back on grey, hurting him.

After being freed from the debris, Grey went with the other apes to the ground to meet the arriving female and children. He and a few other apes held Malcolm at gunpoint, until Caesar yelled at them to leave him. He then bows down to Caesar along with the other apes.

War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations[]

Although Grey returned to Caesar's army, Caesar did not fully trust him anymore and stripped him of his position on the Ape council. Grey was angered by this, as was Red, a gorilla guardian that still believed in Koba's leadership.

Red convinced Grey to leave Caesar's army to create a troop of their own, made up of Koba's followers, with Grey as their new alpha in Koba's place.

While Caesar and the ape army were off fighting the Military in the city, Grey, a few other chimp soldiers, and the Gorilla Guard, were tasked with protecting the females and young at their hideout in the woods.

One night, Grey had Red and the other turncoat apes apprehend the Gorilla Guardians, and assumed command over the Female and Young, with Grey's wife Cedar claiming the title of Ape Queen from Caesar's wife Cornelia. Cornelia fled with a few females and children, as well as the gorilla guardian Ajax.

Later, Grey stood against Red's bid to kill Cornelia while she was assisting a female ape in giving birth. Red turned on him and shot him in the face at close range, killing him. This act enraged the females, including Cedar, and they chased Red away, thereby banishing him from their clan.

Trivia[]

  • Grey's death was similar to Ash's, in the sense that they were killed because of their beliefs and not wanting to kill another.
