Griff Reynolds is a fictional character and supporting antagonist in the ITV British soap opera Coronation Street, appearing as the secondary antagonist in 2022 and 2023 before reappearing as a major antagonist in 2024.

In his characterization, Griff is a terroristic activist and the leader of a racist gang that specializes in imposing right-wing views on Weatherfield. His storyline involves harassing a number of major protagonists such as Alya Nazir and Maria Connor; attempting to kill his friend Spider Nugent after discovering the latter is actually an undercover policeman assigned to investigate his crimes; and grooming local teenager Max Turner into becoming his protégé within the gang.

He was portrayed by Michael Condron.

Biography[]

Griff Reynolds first came to Weatherfield in August 2022 as an acquaintance of local resident Spider Nugent, an activist who had recently arrived back in the street for a while. He later joined Spider and his ex-lover Toyah Habeeb in attending various protests originally thought to be for acting against climate change.

However, when Toyah's old boyfriend Peter Barlow seeks to join the gang, it soon becomes clear that Griff is actually a racist man and the leader of a notorious right-wing faction. While it originally appears as though as Spider is involved with the activities that Griff and his gang specialize in perpetuating, they are unaware that Spider is actually an undercover police officer who is assigned to bring Griff to justice for his crimes.

A few months later, Griff saw a teenage schoolboy named Max Turner getting harassed by his tormentors Blake and Chris. A brawl broke up when Max got attacked, but then Griff rescued Max by threatening Blake and Chris into staying away from him. Griff did this to befriend Max in order to groom him into a racist just like him and he later bought him around to his flat where he was having a party with his other racist mates and with Spider being there he tried to tell Max to leave but Max didn't listen and was slowly being groomed by Griff and Spider could do nothing but watch in order to keep his cover.

One of Griff's mates, Reece Bolton, had a young daughter named Lauren so Griff used Lauren to manipulate Max even further by having her seduce him, this worked well and much to Spider's dismay Max was completely brainwashed. This went even further when Max moved out of this house and moved into Griff's flat after he had a massive argument with his step father David Platt over his relationship with Griff.

Now with Max fully under his control, Griff uses him in order to make propaganda videos encouraging his views and takes Max with him to protests about racism and even gets him to edit some videos to make it look like the general public supports him and his views and tries to make local counsellor Maria Connor and muslin people like Alya Nazir and Daryan Zahawi seem like the bad guys and with Max now being fully manipulated does exactly what Griff wants.

Just weeks before Christmas 2022, Griff plans something a lot more drastic than a few protests. He plans to plant a bomb at the winter market on Coronation Street and blow it up. Spider finally now believes he has enough evidence to get Griff convicted and plots his arrest however everything falls apart when Griff sus' him out and Max sets him up. Spider is then confronted in an alleyway by Griff when a fight ensures which ends with Griff whacking Spider over the head with a crowbar knocking him unconscious, Griff goes to finish the job and kill Spider however is interrupted when Peter arrives and scares Griff off and Spider is then rushed into hospital.

The next day with Spider now out of the picture, Griff goes ahead with his bomb plan and gets Reece to plant the bomb underneath a Speed Daal van at the market. Max realises something is up and he finally snaps out of the hold Griff had on him and with the help of Lauren he warns everyone at the market about the bomb and Alya discovers it in her van and so she decides to sacrifice herself and drive away from the street in the van. After driving into a field she quickly leaps out of the van just as it explodes which still hurts her but doesn't kill her which means Griff masterplan had failed all thanks to Max.

After the bomb incident all of Griff's mates including Reece are arrested however Griff gets away and goes into hiding. He later resurfaces and pays Max a visit at his house and tries to brainwash him all over again but David then bursts in and in order to save Max he starts a fight with Griff however Griff soon gets the better of him but then Spider arrives after coming out of hospital and takes great pleasure in arresting Griff for conspiracy to commit murder and ultimately ends his reign of terror over the street.
