Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin, otherwise known as The Tortoise, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Erik Jan Hanussen) in the 2021 historical action/spy film The King's Man, the third instalment in the Kingsman franchise serving as a prequel to the original film.
He is a mystic Russian monk and the closest adviser of Tsar Nicholas II who keeps the entire Romanov family under his control with a combination of fake "miracles" and opium, and a leading member of the Flock.
He was portrayed by Rhys Ifans, who also played Eyeball Paul in Kevin & Perry Go Large, Adrian in Little Nicky, Jed Parry in Enduring Love, Vladis Grutas in Hannibal Rising, Uncle Phil in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, Edward de Vere in Anonymous, The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home and Otto Hightower in House of the Dragon.
Biography[]
The Plot[]
Rasputin is a right-hand-man of Captain Morton and aids him in his plans to destroy England in revenge for their crimes against Scotland. His membership ring has a picture of a tortoise of it, which he finds annoying as he believes he deserves a better animal. He does calmly backs down when Morton kills one of his goats as an act of intimidation and threatens to kill Rasputin for his complaint, stating that "the tortoise eventually wins the race."
Rasputin uses his dark influence over the Russian Tsar (achieved through getting the Tsar addicted to opium) to push him into joining World War I after Flock agent Gavrilo Princip kills the archduke Franz Ferdinand. As Britain struggles to achieve victory on the Western Front, Rasputin plots to convince Russia to pull out, leaving the British Army vulnerable. He poisons the Tsar's son Alexei with an unknown drug, before "curing" him and telling the Tsar that God wants him out of the war.
Death[]
Knowing of Rasputin's manipulation, Prince Yusupov writes to his English cousin Conrad and begs him to help. Conrad and his father, Duke Orlando of Oxford, travel to Russia with their servants Polly and Shola to kill him. The plan is for Conrad to seduce the bisexual Rasputin before poisoning him with a cyanide-laced cake. However, Rasputin finds Conrad boring and Orlando is forced to take his place.
In his quarters, Rasputin eats the cake and is violently sick, but otherwise suffers no effects. Using his bizarre mystic techniques, Rasputin heals Duke Orlando's injured leg before attempting to drown him in the freezing river. It's revealed he has built up an immunity to cyanide by drinking it every morning, and was thus unaffected by the cake. The others rush in and fight Rasputin, who uses his dancing skills to battle them to a standstill, even subduing Shola by injecting him with opium. Eventually, he is stabbed and seemingly drowned in the river, but emerges in the background for one final attack. Polly quickly puts a stop to that, fatally shooting him.
Despite Rasputin's death, the Shepherd's plan to get Russia out of the war is ultimately successful as Vladimir Lenin is employed in his place and overthrows the Russian monarchy.
Personality[]
Rasputin was a highly charismatic and deviously intelligent man who managed to woo his way into the good graces of the Russian royal family and acted as a close friend to both Tsar Nicholas and Alexandra Feodorovna while in reality he was instead holding a tight grip upon the two and keeping him under his thumb so to keep control of Russia and make all of the important decisions by influencing them through means such as drugging and false prophecies such as when he poisoned their son.
While a 2nd highest ranking member of the flock Rasputin didn't really appear to care much for his employer's cause even showing annoyance at being given the tortoise brandish and asking for something more fierce before relenting at threat of death. He enjoyed wildly hedonistic pursuits such as getting blackout drunk, having sex with whoever he pleased and eating delicious food.
Appearance[]
Rasputin is a very tall and muscular man in his forties with pale skin, piercing blue eyes with large bags under them and a thick, full head of long curly black hair running down his back with a matching beard going down to his chest. He wears long black robes with matching leather boots and has the standard red cashmere scarf of The Flock members wrapped around his waist like a belt. Around his neck he wears a large heavy necklace depicting an elegant looking crucifix which he uses to distribute and conceal his opium.
Trivia[]
- While at first the movie appears to show Rasputin's miracle work as being nothing more than trickery the fact that he was genuinely able to fix Orlando's leg injury and put him into a trance like state suggests that he actually does have the ability to perform miracles but also uses his knowledge of toxins and chemistry to get what he wants as well.
- He was the favorite man of Morton, who compared him to his most loved animal Angus.
- Since the comics of Kingsman was published by Icon Comics, an imprint of Marvel Comics, The King's Man is technically the second time that Rhys Ifans has played a character in a Marvel film following his two appearances as The Lizard in the Spider-Man films.
- His death in the movie is accurate (to a point) to how he was allegedly murdered in real life, as he is poisoned, stabbed, drowned in a freezing river and shot. However, these happened in a different order in reality.
- Despite his small role in the movie, the character gained so much popularity to earn his own emoji on Twitter. Also, many fans initially thought he was the main villain.
- Ironically, the real Rasputin was opposed to World War I, while this version plays a key role in starting it.
