The Grimleal are a cult organization and the main antagonists of the 2012 tactical role-playing video game, Fire Emblem Awakening.
They are a religious cult based in Plegia dedicated to Grima, the Fell Dragon. Led by his loyal and devoted right-hand man, Validar, they intended to release the evil dragon to cause the apocalypse of the entire world.
History[]
Hundreds of years ago, the evil Dragon Grima tried to destroy the world with an human vessel infused with his power. However the heroic First Exalt, empowered by the Divine Dragon ruler, Naga and wielding the sacred Falchion and holy Binding Shield, battled Grima and his vessel , eventually sealing the evil Dragon away.
Whilst most people were grateful to the First Exalt for saving them, there were those among the criminals and other rejects of civilized society, that had followed Grima and were enraged by their master's defeat. These evil men fled to a region that would later be known as Plegia and formed the Grimleal, an organization dedicated to reviving Grima through selectively breeding another human with enough of Grima's power inside them, to act as the Fell Dragon's vessel.
Plegia eventually became the bitter enemy of the First Exalt's kingdom, Ylisse and the Grimleal somehow obtained the Sable sphere of the First Exalt's Binding Shield to ensure that the complete Shield could never again be used against Grima.
In the following of years since, the Grimleal would continually keep attempting to create a suitable vessel for their master, but would only meet with failure. In the meantime, the Grimleal would ritualistically torment the people of Plegia and Ylisse; razing villages, enslaving people and kidnapping civilians, especially women and children, to sacrifice to Grima.
However after a thousand years ago, the current cult leader, Validar, managed to produce a child with all of Grima's power. However the child's mother upon finding out that the child would be possessed by Grima, fled from her husband and the cult with her baby in tow. The Grimleal searched for this baby but were unable to reclaim them.
Chrom's father used to fight against the Grimleal, and killed several of their number, but wasn't able to destroy them. Gangrel, the former king of Plegia made an alliance with the Grimleal to help expand Plegia's territory and consolidate his power. The Grimleal used this the Alliance to authorize inquisitions to be conducted against Plegians that resisted Grima.
Though forced to obey the Grimleal, many plegian citizens don't actually worship Grima and inwardly hope for their freedom with Ylisse's victory. During a skirmish with Chrom, Validar managed to meet up with a version of Grima in a human vessel that had followed Lucina from her doomed future
Whilst Gangrel fell to the forces of Chrom and his tactician, Robin, the Grimleal subsequently took control of the country and put Validar on Gangrel's throne, ensuring the people of Plegia would still suffer. However the Grimleal heard about something that could jeopardize their problems to resurrect Grima of the present.
Across the sea in the continent of Valm, the overlord Walhart had built a great army and sought to cross over to the continent of Ylisse, obtain the Fire Emblem and use it to unite the people to wipe out the Grimleal, thus preventing the resurrection of Grima. Knowing this could jeopardize their plans, Validar contacted a Valmese Grimleal known as Excellus and assigned them the task of infiltrating Walhart's army as their tactician with the goal of sabotaging Walhart's campaign from the inside and obtaining the Fire Emblem, or at least buying time for the Grimleal to fight off Walhart.
To combat Walhart's army, Validar let Chrom, now the King of Ylisse, to take funding and ships, but no soldiers to combat Walhart's Valm forces, whilst introducing the Grima possessed Robin from the future as the Hierophant of the Grimleal. That night, Validar recognizes Robin as his long lost child, revealing himself to his child and sends some risen to distract Chrom, but Robin does not join with Validar.
Whilst Excellus did not succeed at obtaining the Fire Emblem, they did succeed in buying time for the Grimleal and eventually Walhart's forces were defeated by Ylisse clearing the way for the Grimleal to proceed with their plans to resurrect Grima. To prepare for Grima's revival, the Grimleal started grouping as well as forcing many regular citizens of Plegia to worship Grima.
Members[]
- Validar: Leader of the Grimleal, and head priest, as well as the father of Robin
- Aversa: A woman who was brainwashed and enslaved to serve the Grimleal, was later freed and helped destroy the religion.
- Excellus: A member of Walhart's army that's actually a Grimleal double agent
- Algol: A thuggish Grimleal priest with an extremely sadistic personality.
- Ardri

Notes[]
- The Grimleal are comparable to Those Who Slither in the Dark, as both are the main villain organization of their game, both are purely evil, and both are wholly destroyed in the end.
- Validar's addition to Fire Emblem Heroes marks the first time, a member of the Grimleal has been playable in Fire Emblem!
- In the Death's Embrace DLC, Henry recognizes one of the Grimleal's symbols in Algol's lair as also being used in the abusive boarding school (orphanage in Japan) that his parents sent him to, this implies it may have been a Grimleal institution.
