Grindle is a supporting character in the 2025 indie metroidvania Hollow Knight: Silksong.
He is a member of the Snitchflies, a gang of pickpockets and robbers that steal treasures from Pharloom's people. With the kingdom in decline and its order in disarray, Grindle has taken this opportunity to pilfer its bowels for all they're worth.
Appearance[]
Grindle is a Snitchfly with a reddish-brown, fox-like face, big white eyes and feathery antennae. He has a squat grey abdomen and thin black limbs.
Personality[]
Grindle is a greedy and opportunistic bug, always on the prowl for another easy mark to pilfer goods from. He shows no interests except for his own self-preservation, turning down Hornet's offer to team up with him to escape jail as he's satisfied with pillaging goods from the Slab. He seems to be quite hypocritical, chastising other bugs for turning down his advances and attempts to steal their belongings, such as when he scolds Hornet for being a "bully" after she slaps him during his robbery attempt. Despite this, Grindle can be useful as he does give helpful advice to Hornet and offers to sew on her new tool pouches herself, though all these are for monetary gain. Interestingly, he also speaks with first person plural pronouns, implying that whatever he's doing benefits the Snitchflies as a whole, as seen from how he sets up shop in their storage area.
Biography[]
Grindle can first be met in the Marrow, imprisoned in a jail cell for pickpocketing. He calls out to Hornet to free him by destroying the bars of his cell, and once done he thanks her for her efforts. Grindle notes her various belongings but is warned by Hornet that she won't hesitate to strike him down if he tries to steal from her. He offers advice on where to go for several rosaries, and will be present rummaging through bags in the jail if the room is re-entered. It is to be noted that even if Hornet doesn't rescue Grindle, he will escape himself if she enters Shellwood or the Far Fields, leaving the cell in that scenario.
After Hornet is abducted by a Wardenfly, she can find Grindle behind a locked door rummaging through belongings. She proposes for the two of them to escape together, but he's uninterested. Later, Grindle is found rummaging through a room with a bench inside. He believes Hornet was arrested for thievery like he was, but after being told she was captured to be brought to the Citadel, he doesn't believe her and warns her of the fly wardens coming to get her. Once Hornet retrieves her belongings, Grindle would have left the Slab already.
When Hornet enters the Citadel, Grindle somehow sneaks in and begins stealing items. He first appears in the Choral Chambers, cornered by a bunch of the Choir's bugs. After Hornet defeats them, Grindle taunts them by remarking that their end was well deserved. Hornet warns him that the Haunting's source appears to be stirring but he's unconcerned. He notices Hornet's amassed goods and tries to pickpocket her, but gets treated to a backhanded slap, causing him to relent. Afterwards, Grindle can be found in one of three rooms stealing treasure. As Grindle's presence will make these chests empty, it's recommended that he's only freed after they're cleared.
Grindle will make his final residence in the Blasted Steps, where he's since set up shop, stashing his and the other Snitchflies' ill-gotten gains. He will sell various goods to Hornet, with Act III expanding his selection to include various wares from merchants that die during the game's events. Whether these wares were personally pilfered by Grindle himself or by the other Snitchflies is unknown.
Trivia[]
- Grindle was one of the NPCs revealed to the public via an ARG hosted by Matthew "Leth" Griffin, marketing and publishing director for Team Cherry's games. In particular, Grindle's riddles revolved around various NPCs in Hollow Knight.
