Griphook the goblin was an employee of Gringotts Wizarding Bank in the Harry Potter series of books and movies. He helped Harry Potter and Rubeus Hagrid retrieve the Philosopher's Stone in 1991 and helped Harry, Ron, and Hermione get into the Lestrange vault, however, he left them there to die.

In the movies, he is portrayed by the late Verne Troyer in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, who also played Mini-Me in the Austin Powers movies, and by Warwick Davis in the two Deathly Hallows movies, however, Griphook was always voiced by Davis. Davis also played the Leprechaun in the first six Leprechaun movies and Rukh in Star Wars Rebels.

Personality

In the first book, Griphook showed grim happiness when talking about only checking the vaults every ten years. The goblin does not trust wizards and witches, which leads to his betrayal in Gringotts, and Griphook was bloodthirsty and relished the idea of lesser creature's pain. However, he was impressed at the great respect Harry had for goblins and elves, between saving him and burying Dobby.

Appearance

Griphook's eyes are black. He has sallow skin.

In the films, Griphook sometimes wears golden half-moon glasses. He has grey hair and wears formal clothing which differs between the two actor's portrayals. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Griphook has a buttoned brown outfit and in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One and Part Two, he has a striped white shirt with a black vest.

In older LEGO Harry Potter minifigures, Griphook and other goblins had no distinct eye colour and had their skin colour over their eyes.

Trivia

  • In the LEGO Harry Potter Games, Griphook is the only goblin character, meaning he is necessary to unlock vaults in the game.
  • In the book, Griphook's fate was left ambiguous after he abandoned Harry, Ron, and Hermione, whereas in the movies, Voldemort kills him.
    • However, in the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, an unnamed goblin is murdered by Voldemort. This golbin is most likely not Griphook, as the goblin is unnamed. Also, it took place in Malfoy Manor, and Griphook would be reluctant to return there because of him being held captive there.
