“ | The Terror of the Seas is now the Terror of the Land! | „ |
~ Robert Kirkman on the Grizzly Sharks. |
The Grizzly Sharks are the main antagonists of the eponymous comic book series Grizzly Shark by Image Comics, starting with the one-shot Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark and followed up with Grizzly Shark Returns and Grizzly Shark VS Sea Bear.
They are a large group of sharks that dwell and prey on land, devouring any living thing they detect, especially if it recently bled, even if only slightly.
Appearance[]
Grizzly Sharks vary in appearance, as sharks do, but most appear to be Great White Sharks, and massive ones at that, easily placing them among the biggest sharks on Earth.
Personality[]
All Grizzly Sharks are extremely bloodthirsty, and are driven mostly by hunger or unnatural aggressiveness and possibly territorialism, being in an almost permanent state of anger.
They are capable of setting traps on their own, such as putting humans inside cages to trick other humans as well as not fall into water if they can avoid it, knowing full well they'd drown.
Biography[]
Background[]
“ | What would be scarier than getting attacked by a bear in the woods? The answer was obvious, a shark. | „ |

The Grizzly Sharks' origin story.
Taking place in an alternate Earth where, in the past, land and marine creatures lived in opposite environments but were later forced to live where we see them today, two creatures did not switch places and stayed where they are now: The Grizzly Shark and the Sea Bear.
Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark[]
Throughout the years, the Grizzly Sharks killed all who entered their forest, but remained a myth until one day, when humans started setting traps and hunting them down due to the sharks revealing their presence by leaving their unique bite marks on cattle.

The first appearance of the Grizzly Shark.
While chasing some notoriously persistent humans, a vast and diverse group of Grizzly Sharks were driven off a cliff and into the sea where they drowned, with the exception of one who fought off and killed a Sea Bear who had just appeared in the area. Before finishing off the last two humans, one of them threw a baby zombie at his mouth, which the last Grizzly Shark calmly swallowed, unaware that this would mean his end as the baby zombie ate the shark's heart, killing him.
It is unknown if that was truly the last Grizzly Shark or if more roam that area.
Powers and Abilities[]

Grizzly Sharks are remarkable in many ways. They are intelligent enough to set up traps for humans and drive vehicles, strong and tough enough to smash through just about any material (even thick boulders) without taking any damage and fast enough to cross a mile in an instant, in a way that almost makes them look like they're flying, even though they're just "swimming" through leaves and slithering like snakes on the ground.
They possess the same razor sharp teeth most sharks possess, allowing them to cut through humans like wet paper and, thanks to their size, devour them almost whole. They also seem to have an endless appetite and an even better olfactory system than actual sharks, able to instantly detect blood in the air a mile away and even tracking down someone just from getting a cramp.
Weaknesses[]

Covering yourself in cinnamon bear jubilee will protect you from them consuming you, since the substance acts as some sort of shark repellent. Possibly as a reference to their electroreceptors located near their noses, being a famous "weakpoint" in sharks, they hate being punched in the nose (for a human it's the equivalent of being punched in the lung).
Since their physiology has been greatly altered from adapting to land (allowing them to roar which sharks cannot do, and evolving tongues which sharks do not possess), they can no longer live at sea, and will immediately drown if they enter a large enough body of water.
Trivia[]
- The Grizzly Sharks' concept were made from a conversation Ryan Ottley had with Jason Howard in a hotel room after a comic convention. They were rambling about silly ideas for a comic, one thought led to another and Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark were born. A bear and a shark get mixed up, shark in the forest, bear in the ocean. They laughed and agreed to do it just as a side project.
- According to writer and artist Ryan Ottley, the Grizzly Sharks were a bit hard to draw since he'd never drawn sharks and had to practice by looking up photos of them. This could explain the sheer size and ferocity in their designs, though this is known to be part of his art style when drawing monsters.
- There are two instances in which the Grizzly Sharks chose not to devour people, particularly children. While one consumed a whole family on a picnic, it left a baby alone (forcing the baby to consume his family's remains in order to survive, becoming a zombie) and the second case was when a shark ate a father and left without eating the son. However, since one of the Grizzly Sharks ate the baby zombie and another shark ate a few children during an expedition, it's unlikely that they care at all.
