Gruda is the main antagonist of Ys IV: Mask of the Sun -A New Theory- and an alternative version of the one from canon.
Appearance[]
Gruda is a pale-skinned mage with black hair and eyes who wears a black robe adorned with gold.
Powers and Skills[]
Gruda's primary weapon of choice is a mystic book. Among the spells he can cast, he can launch five or so dark energy projectiles at a time, teleport, levitate, and summon giant serpants.
Biography[]
Gruda first appears in the forest during an earthquake, lamenting to his cronies Gadis and Bami that they could not find the Mask of the Sun. After some talk, they teleport away before the ground blows away.
Soon Gruda greets Commander Brutus in his tent who wants Gruda to explain after getting his report. Gruda explains to Brutus that buried underneath the forest of Celceta there is a fortress city made of gold once occupied by an ancient civilization. This involves the Mask of the Sun.
When Brutus asks about the mask, Gruda explains he could make it easy for him and there will involve a lot of magical power. It will also involve an unknown shrine. The mask's shape is uncertain and seems to be needed piece of equipment and they might be able to locate it.
Brutus was not happy his own research ended in failure due to the Romun Empire not having a source of magic power. Brutus then tells Gruda to notify the army as they are heading towards the sea of trees. Gruda explains that this might not be a good idea and he will search for the information.
Gruda then leaves the tent and makes a remark about the small vessel making the ambition true and a small man being a bad person.
At the kingdom of gold, Gruda has realized that there is no mask and the true mask of the sun is a cannon that stores solar energy and fires it to the ground. Gruda could hardly believe that Celceta could get cooked by it and plans to turn Europa into a blazing wasteland.
Adol confronts Gruda who had the supposed seventh book of Ys, which was really made by Commander Brutus when he opened a research institute for magic, but Gruda had already decided Brutus was no longer useful for him by then and proceeds to fight Adol.
After Adol ends his ambition, Gruda loses the ability to use magic. He furiously calls Adol a child of light and expresses how mad he was of the cabinet robbing him of his entire life. When Gruda was a child he had a mysterious power and listened to his father's wishes not to show it in public.
However, one day, Gruda's father was caught in a mine accident and Gruda wanted to help him. Gruda's life got ruined no matter where he went. When Adol had bested him, Gruda feels no regret about his life.
