We have brought many powerful monsters to bear, and all is going according to plan. Their resolve weakens by the day, and soon, we shall wipe them out in one fell swoop.
~ Gruda to a captain of the Romun Empire.

Gruda is an antagonist of Ys IV: The Mask of the Sun and an alternative version of the one from canon.

Appearance[]

Gruda is a grey-haired man with shoulder pads, a blue cape, a purple shirt, light red pants, and grey boots.

Powers and Abilities[]

He has demonstrated the ability to teleport at the beginning of the game. His attacks consist of red and blue small energy balls and big ones that split into smaller ones. Once he becomes a draconic beast, he can unleash lasers and lightning from his four hands, launch tiny white energy balls from the spikes of his wings, and breath beams of fire.

Biography[]

He first appears when a soldier of the Romun Empire seeks answers from him, such as when they can begin their invasion and claim the land of Celceta for it. He tells him that he along with Bami and Gadis have been hired to speed things up, hoping to hear the results before the local townsfolk find them out. Gruda tells him a "thousand pardons" and asks him to handle a delay, saying he brought many powerful monsters as part of the plan to weaken their resolve and kill them off in one fell swoop. The captain then looks forward to seeing what fruits their labors will bring, but threatens to terminate the agreement if they fail. Gruda then teleports out.

After Adol defeats Karna's brother Lemnos who was turned into a crazed monster by Bami, he explains he was taken into the Sacred Stormvale by Gruda's group and that they have been turning other people into monsters. Karna also recalls this same group visiting the castle in the Sacred Stormvale a few months back and they might have been behind a series of people disappearing.

After landing in the Sacred Stormvale, Adol overhears Gruda and his two cronies from the other side of a wall talking about Adol's prowess in the cave and about how Bami's magic is not all cracked up as it should be. Gadis tells Gruda if they need to kill someone they need a strong weapon such as an axe. Bami expresses how the appeal of subtlety is lost on him and how unhappy she is to throw her lot in with someone like him. She also says that Gruda is refined enough to appreciate things of beauty such as herself and has half a mind to turn Gadis into a demon. Gruda promptly orders them to break up their argument and that Eldeel will come soon. He also considers Lemnos' fate to be a small consequence and they must wreck the morale of the Wind Village's militia as it can improve their odds of victory. He also says that having the Mask of the Sun with them will make things easier too. Before they meet Eldeel, they must not let him know about their work as mages in the service of the Romun Empire as doubt of their loyalty will lead to nothing. Shortly after, Eldeel appears and asks if they are finished as he heard something about Lemnos and trusts that the three have no intention of keeping secrets from him, which Gruda denies and that they've used Lemnos to further their goals. Eldeel also asks something else regarding their plan and blows down the wall Adol was hiding behind and leaves him the three mages. Gruda is quite furious to see Adol make a fool of him. They then drag him to the middle of the room and beat him up and continue to do so a while after he lost consciousness before leaving.

Later when Adol finds himself riding a fish-loaded boat to deliver some medicine to Claus, Gruda, and his group as seen again at the Sacred Stormvale with Eldeel where Gruda reports that the Eye of the Moon has been found in Esteria and one of their knights have been sent to procure it. Eldeel, however, scolds him for leaving Adol alive, which leads to his further meddling in the scheme. But Gruda says that once they get the Eye of the Moon, killing Adol will be easy. Shortly after, Leeza arrives and expresses shock that Eldeel turned evil as opposed to being the peace-loving soul she saw him as. Gruda intervenes and proceeds to let his cronies mortally wound her. Eldeel, however, heals her and leaves her his necklace before leaving.

When Adol heads to the Sacred Stormvale to save Lillia from being sacrificed, he intervenes in an attempt to turn an innocent into a monster by one of Gruda’s followers who sends several cronies to kill Adol and tries to kill him himself before becoming the killed. The captive informs Adol about other victims who were changed and they are in the dungeon somewhere. Adol finds Lilia, but has to defeat the knight who tried to kill him, but he gets surrounded by a wheel of fire that knocks him out. By the time Adol wakes up, Gruda and his allies have already taken Lilia away. But they have missed the Eye of the Moon, which was left in Lillia's cell as Adol discovered.

Later on, Adol learns from the spirit of Lefance that the return of the ancient city of the Winged Ones could be the end of the world and an age of endless darkness. The spirit then conveys his power unto his old sword and says his five disciples will help him. Once the city returns, Adol proceeds to head there to stop the impending apocalypse.

Later after failing to prevent Lillia's sacrifice, a remorseful Leeza reveals her belief that Gruda and his companions were behind Eldeel’s plot to bring the city back and gives him the Necklace of Radiance and tells him to use it on Lillia in the revival chamber.

After Adol uses the Wing of Valor to survive a fall to reach the Golden Shrine, he is confronted by Gruda who had no intention to let Adol interfere with Eldeel's ceremony. It is here that Adol realizes Gruda was never loyal to Eldeel and had been his pawn since day one in order to attain the power Eldeel is an heir to in the name of world domination. Adol also realizes that Gruda was behind Eldeel's corruption, Leeza's pain, and all humans turned into monsters. Gruda also intends for Eldeel to be his figurehead ruler for Celceta. He also states he will not let the Romun Empire have this power.

Gruda also reveals that the Black Pearl, a creation of Celceta's ancients, was brought to Ys. Gruda then takes on Adol, first in his human form, and when that fails, he turns into a draconic humanoid in a last-ditch attempt to kill Adol, but ultimately fails.

Personality[]

Gruda appears to be cold and calculating, secretly playing both Eldeel and the Romun Empire in his bid for world domination. Although he presents himself as subservient and dutiful to others, this is merely a charade he uses in order to manipulate the situation to his benefits. While he claims to have pledged loyalty to Eldeel, he in truth considers him an unworthy freak and a puppet whose powers he will use to take over the world. Similarly, he only served the Romun Empire to further his plans and never had any intention of assisting them beyond that.

Gruda's true personality is displayed once his plan reaches its climax. He is arrogant and narcisistic, considering himself a noble existence that's above all others and belittling Adol as he explains what he was after and how powerful he will become. Although he conducts himself with patience and restrain, at times he shows a short fuse and can get violent and aggressive if he feels transgressed or insulted. Also remorseless, Gruda uses others without a second thought if it helps his plans, turning thousands of innocents into monsters, sacrificing others or corrupting the otherwise good Eldeel to serve his needs. Worse yet, he happily admits to all the pain, suffering and death his actions have caused with glee.

Although he appears to show mercy to Leeza when he orders Gadis to give her a "swift and painless" death, this appears to have been a pragmatic choice as to prevent Eldeel from breaking off the corruption he's placed him in.
