“ | I’ve figured that you come here. You were strong enough to take on Gadis and Bami, and I respect that. ~ Gruda to Adol, prior to their fight. |
Gruda is one of the major antagonists of Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys and an alternative version of his canon self.
Appearance[]
Gruda is a short man with light blue hair, dark eyes, and pale skin. He dresses in a purple cape and a short-sleeved outfit with spiked shoulder pads.
Powers and Abilities[]
One of the skills Gruda possesses is the use of a longsword.
Biography[]
When Adol heads to Lord Slanos’s tomb within the Nelgal Lava Pits after he wounds a transformed Lemnos in self-defense, he learns from the phantom of Slanos, the strongest warrior in the Celceta dynasty that someone seeks to open a sealed gate and are already in progress. The phantom tells Adol that his strength is needed and grants him the fire magic.
Shortly after, Adol and Karna are confronted by Gruda and his cronies Bami and Gadis, who were not only previously unable to open the door to the tomb but also responsible for turning Lemnos into the spider monster Adol confronted earlier. Gruda tells him that they are in his debt and were after the wand Adol had. When Karna asks if they are the Clan of Darkness, Gadis confirms it and demands they hand over the wand. Gruda orders Bami to kill the two. They dodge one of her attacks, but this leads to part of the wall becoming humanoid monsters. When Adol and Karna head out after killing these creatures, they are confronted at the entrance by the clan where Bami tries to turn them into monsters when a vibration occurs, putting a damper to this plan and her having to retreat alongside the other two clan members.
Later on, Adol learns from Lemnos in the hospital about how cruel and murderous Gruda is and warns him to be careful about him and his cronies Gadis and Bami. After gaining the Alter magic from Talim's phantom, Adol learns from a couple of demons about how poorly the Clan of Darkness treats them.
Later, Adol encounters the clan in the forest where they talk about Adol procuring Talim's power and getting stronger. They consider killing him in the forest and know he is somewhere in it. They then leave. Adol follows them only for Gadis to cut down the bridge with Adol on it.
A surviving Adol is later by Gruda and his cronies at the Sacred Castle, where they hold Leeza hostage for the wands, and Adol was forced to comply. Gruda tries to kill her anyway only for Duran, one of the group's old comrades, to intervene by throwing a knife at Gruda. Gruda tells them they can't bother with them and must leave. Duran tells Adol to pursue the trio where Eldeel shows up with them. After Eldeel shows a replica of the Black Pearl Adol destroyed, he absorbs its powers, wounds Adol, and destroys the part of the castle they are, fleeing with the Clan of Darkness.
Leeza and her father later reveal to a recovered Adol that Eldeel turned evil after the Clan of Darkness appeared. They believe they were behind his change. Later Adol meets Duran in the desert who was pursuing the Clan when they've destroyed the pillars in the area, obstructing his path. After passing Miyu's trial, his phantom appears to Adol and reveals himself to the red-haired hero as a servant of the hero Lord Lefance. The phantom reveals if the sealed power is released, all life in the world will be in torment. The phantom then provides Adol the Warp Magic.
After Adol survives falling down a waterfall where his raft gets broken to pieces, he is confronted by the Clan of Darkness, who are quite upset at his appearance. Bami then turns him into a monster before leaving. Pursuing them into the cave, Adol overhears Eldeel talking with Gruda about Siege Fact and the Mask of the Moon. He then tells Gruda to go and begin his preparations. Adol then meets up with Duran who is upset at the Clan getting away again.
Later, after Adol used the sacred water to break the curse. The Clan of Darkness has a meeting with Commander Leo about needing the Mask of the Moon to enter the Golden City. Gruda tells him that the Golden City will be his once they get the mask. Leo also shows them the Cleria gear he confiscated from Adol at the beginning and tells them to make use of it. When Adol meets Sara Tovah again, she explains that it's the Clan of Darkness pulling the strings behind the Romun soldiers, but does not understand beyond a connection between Celceta and Esteria.
Later, Adol kills Gadis for good and gets back the Fire Magic and Cleria Shield from him. Adol finds out from Origa, the leader of the Moon Village Serene, that the surviving members set up a blockade to keep him from reaching Fire Mountain and has to meet Banjo and help her get the ingredients for the potion needed to blow it up.
Gruda, posing as an old woman after burning down Serene, snatches the Mask of the Moon from him. He then casts off the disguise and announces his plan to wait until after a ceremony to actually kill him and warps away. Meeting the phantom of Lefance, Adol learns that minions of evil seek to break the seal on the Mask of the Sun. He also warns our hero if Eldeel gets the mask, Celceta will be burned.
Upon reaching the ceremony, Adol finds Eldeel, Gruda, and Bami with a chained up Leeza. Bami proceeds to attack Adol in a transformed state. However, Adol manages to slay her and reclaim the Cleria Armor. Eldeel however goes with his ceremony to call forth the fallen city from the ground, burning down the surrounding forests and triggering volcanos. This is followed up with the rising city from the ground. Eldeel planned to use Leeza as a sacrifice when Gruda literally stabs him in the back in front of her. Gruda then tells a shocked Eldeel that he has served his purpose and explains to the Winged man the real purpose for the Clan of Darkness, resurrecting Arem, the true leader of the Clan. Gruda also tells Adol that his Cleria Sword is of outstanding quality and tells him to watch the land of Celceta burn at the hands of Arem before warping away.
A remorseful Eldeel pleads for forgiveness as he dies. The spirits of Lefance and his disciples tell Adol that the only option left to stop Arem is to banish the Mask of the Sun forever to oblivion. But Adol will be needing the El Doran magic to carry out this task.
Adol later confronts Gruda at the Lunes Tower in the Ancient City to recover the Cleria Sword from him on orders from Lefance. Gruda had been anticipating his arrival, expressing that he was impressed by Adol killing Gadis and Bami. But then tells him that it will be worth the Era of Darkness arriving and that he will sever his head and give it to Arem as a gift. Gruda then takes on an armored form to take on Adol. Upon defeat, he screams out to Lord Arem to carry out his scheme as he dies. Adol then recovers both the Mask of the Moon and the Cleria Sword as part of his preparations to take on Arem.
Personality[]
As the leader of the Clan of Darkness, Gruda is a cruel and murderous individual who mistreats those below him, having no care in the world for anyone other than his lord Arem. Gruda is fully devoted to Arem and seeks to resurrect him back no matter the cost, willfully sacrificing vessels in his failed initial attempts to do so. While he at one point admits that all his actions have been led by Arem's hatred, he fully believes everything will be worth it once Arem brings about an era of darkness, and even in death pleads to his lord to bring that world to fruition.
Ruthless and merciless, Gruda has no qualms over using any method in order to achieve his goals. Whether it is burning down a village in order to secure the Mask of the Moon from Adol, using Leeza as a hostage to force him to hand over the Wand, turning Lemnos into a monster or corrupting Eldeel so he'd play his part in Arem's revival, he will do without hesitation. He has no interest or care for anyone else, scoffing at the lost of another vessel in his failed attempts to summon Arem, destroying an innocent village, and even killing those who failed him or have outlived their usefulness such as his follower Gadis and Eldeel once he was no longer needed in his plans. Far as Gruda cares, everyone else is merely a tool or stepping stone in achieving his ultimate objective.
Gruda is good at manipulating and deceiving others, taking full advantage of them in order to further his agenda. He plays the role of an old lady to deceive Adol into giving him the Mask of the Moon, and pretends to be a subordinate of Eldeel only to gain and maintain his confidence. He also displays a complete lack of mercy or honor, going back on his word and trying to kill Leeza after getting the wand, and mocking Eldeel after fatally injuring him and telling him to watch as the lands burn in Arem's hands. He, however, appears to hold those with strength in somewhat high steem, as he tells Adol before their final battle that he's impressed over his achievements and he respects him for that.
