The Grumbles, also known as the Matured Giggles, are the secondary antagonists of the DOORS floor "The Mines".
Appearance[]
Grumbles appear similar to Giggle and Screech but they are larger, have 8 tentacles, more eyes and look more pinkish brown.
The Queen Grumble has a scar on its forehead. She is slightly larger and paler than the standard Grumbles.
Biography[]
The Queen Grumble first appears after Door 150 where the Queen Grumble tries to kill the player. After a short chase sequence, the player needs to activate a button and enter a code through an anchor. After this, the Grumbles will begin hunting the player down. Grumbles will search around the caves looking for the players. If it spots one, it will begin chase and try to attack them, but if it loses them, it will go back to patrolling. If it hits a player, it will launch them away and deal 50 damage, and if they are attacked again, it will do a short animation before killing them instantly. Using a Crucifix will banish them. The Queen Grumble is different from the standard Grumble. She has faster movement speed and doesn't laugh whenever she spots a player. She can still be blinded by the Bulklight but barely gets affected.
Upon finding all four Anchors and lowering the bridge. The Queen Grumble breaks down the gate and begins chasing the player. The player must go to the ladder to escape them. They are not seen again until the start of the second Seek chase.
Queen Grumble is seen next on a ceiling tunnel in a sewer hallway, she looks at the player and waits until the player reaches the end of the room, then, the Queen Grumble with climb back down to try and kill the player just for Seek to destroy a wall and create rubble to block the Queen Grumble, the Queen Grumble will interfere with the chases, first being 2 paths, one will have Queen Grumble to and kill the player but be blocked by rubble, touching the Queen Grumble will instantly kill the player, then Queen Grumble can be seen in blocked pipes, there are open pipes that the Queen Grumble will be seen through, touching her will result in an instant death.
After interacting with the exit, a cutscene plays out. The player enters a castle before the Queen Grumble comes out, just when it was about to attack the player, Seek intervenes and consumes the Queen Grumble, possibly infecting it.
Trivia[]
- Grumbles are only hostile because they specifically protect the nest and the queen from humans and Seek. They fail to do so when the Queen Grumble gets infected by Seek, putting the entire Giggle and Grumble species in danger.
- According to Guiding Light, Grumbles are matured Giggles.
- Grumble is one of the three entities being able to escape the Crucifix, the other being Figure and Seek. Lore-wise, this seems to be because they are the strongest and smartest of the entities, and mechanics-wise, this seems to happen to justify their rematches later on in the game. This appears to happen because Seek overpowers the crucifix. Figure is not a demon (possibly being a homunculus, a humanoid amalgamation of flesh & bone that was supposed to be a human), & Grumbles simply being too big to be crucified (also the case for the Seek Blob).
- As of the Content Update, this only applies to the Queen Grumble now, as regular Grumbles can now be crucified
- The Queen Grumble consumed by Seek at the end of the mines may had been the queen as according to Guiding Light, Grumbles patrol to protect their queen, not to mention it having an unseen 8 tentacles & a scar on its forehead.
- There’s sometimes a bug where if a player revives after dying during Seek’s chase, Grumble’s chase will not occur and the game will softlock.
