Gryla is the overarching antagonist of "Yule Lads," the 10th episode of the second season of the animated television series Hilda and the overarching antagonist of the respective segment in Hilda and the Time Worm, a book adapting events from the second season of the series.

Biography[]

Before the series, Gryla had captured three naughty boys and turned them into Yule Lads, with Kertasnikir as their leader. She keeps them in line with threats of eating them if they don't capture naughty children for her.

Gryla was going to eat a boy who was caught stealing candles before he begged his life to be spared if he brought her to other naughty children in his place. He who was turned into a Yule Lad after this. He then brought Ketkrokur and Stekkjarsaur to her, but they made the same deal with Gryla. After awhile, thirteen children were turned into Yule Lads, including himself, Ketkrokur and Stekkjarsaur. They were tasked with finding naughty children during the Trolberg Winter Festival. As the first Yule Lad, Kertasnikir became their leader. The Yule Lads would kidnap naughty children from Trolberg for centuries.

The Yule Lads are first seen in the winter time when Hilda, Frida and David enter their house. Kertasnikir tells the other Yule Lads to hide upon their arrival before Hilda assures him that they're friendly. Hilda invites him to their stall Hilda sells him and the other Yule Lads some broth. They are all ambushed by Trevor and his friends with snowballs before Kert and the other Yule Lads fight them off. He and the other Yule Lads kidnap Trevor and his mother for Gryla.

The next day Hilda tells Kert that her mother leaves tea bags on the counter, calling her "hypocritical". As a result, Kert kidnaps Johanna as well. After Hilda reads her mother's book on Gryla and the Yule Lads, she discovers that the Yule Lads are named after crimes they committed, in Kert's case, stealing candles. Kert and the Yule Lads admit their wrongdoings and are offered to instead give Gryla broth instead of humans. They accept this and are taught the recipe to the broth and make enough for Gryla. After Gryla takes the broth in bags and returns to her year long slumber, the Yule Lads go back to their house. Kert happily watches the Sonstansil Tree light up and closes the door as the house vanishes.
