~ Guritz mocking the “Corsairs” |
Guritz is a minor antagonist in the 2003 film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King; a cowardly orc captain known for his scythe and skull helmet top who was Gothmog’s second-in-command during the battle of Pelennor Fields.
He was played by Joel Tobek, but voiced by Craig Parker who also voiced Gothmog as well as Blue Face, Mad Magnet and Motodrone in Power Rangers Ninja Storm.
Biography[]
Past[]
Guritz was an Orc commander who worked for Sauron and fought in several battles; apparently getting extensive facial scarring during one.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King[]
After the death of Saruman and the loss of Isengard, the Witch-king dons his armour and leads his army to Middle Earth's former capital; Gondor. Guritz is not shown among the Orcs that cross the river to fight in and seemingly comes across with the bulk of the army after the bridge is repaired. Guritz is first seen after they arrive at Minas Tirith when Gothmog orders him to “release the prisoners.” Guritz orders up the catapults which launch the heads of the Gondorian Soldiers who died in Osgiliath to break the enemy soldier’s will. Fleeing from the Rohirrim’s arrival during the battle, Guritz takes Murgash and a group of orcs to mock the Corsairs of Umbar for their late arrival. However, the Corsair ship has been hijacked by Aragorn, Gimli and Legola, who jump from the boat and charge toward Guritz. Guritz smiles in a cocky manner, believing he could kill the three until the Army Of The Dead emerges from the ships. They cut down the shocked and terrified Guritz as well as Murgash and his crew.
Personality[]
Though extensively scarred, Guritz was a coward whom often hid behind higher ranking orcs and soldiers when a battle had him outnumbered. However, he constantly reminded others of his rank and superiority by reminding them of the fate of his helmet trophy.
Trivia[]
- Guritz was nicknamed “Skully” by the crew.
- Guritz was created exclusively for the film and was not a character in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings.
