Piercing this universe, into the starry sky, this vast and infinite universe is my home...
~ Gurney's last words

Gurney Halleck is a supporting antagonist of the anime series Tōshō Daimos. He is a Baam warrior who fights Kazuya Ryūzaki in exchange for a pardon for his supposed treachery. He is also Richter's martial arts instructor.

He was voiced by Hiroya Ishimaru.

Personality[]

Halleck is a perfect example of a Baam soldier who is not evil at all but fights in the wrong side. He possesses a code of honor and is greatly displeased when his actions were considered traitorous. Due to his desire to restore his honor at all cost, he decides to fight Kazuya Ryūzaki on an equal footing. He and Kazuya even understand each other as warriors, and Halleck's final act is saving Kazuya from a combat machine of the Baam Empire.

History[]

Before the events of the series, Gurney Halleck was sentenced to prison for an unknown crime and forced to spar gladiators as punishment. One day, Prince Richter approached him due to the fact that Liza and Balbas were unsuccessful in defeating Daimos. Richter promised Gurney a position as his right hand if he succeeded in killing Kazuya Ryūzak, the pilot of Daimos, but Gurney refused this reward, saying that he only desired the happiness of the Baam-seijin. However, he asked Richter to allow him to choose the method of killing Kazuya, which Richter agreed to.

Liza overheard this conversation and was upset that Richter was choosing a new right hand. Being in love with him, Liza wanted to be by his side, but he reprimanded her for her losses against the titular robot and punished her by smacking her with the end of his staff. As a result, Liza convinced Balbas to help her sabotage Gurney, saying that if he didn't, there would be a chance that Gurney would overtake his position as well. Together, Liza and Balbas conspire against him.

Gurney sent a message to the Daimovic base saying that Kazuya must spar with him on Mount Eternity, or Erika is as good as dead. Kyoshiro warns Kazuya that this may be a trap, but Kazuya goes there anyway. Upon arriving, Gurney compliments him for coming alone, and the two spar. Though it ends with a draw, the two are amazed at the other's prowess, silently shocked that they managed to avoid the other's attacks.

Suddenly, a laser beam is shot from the bush, narrowly missing Kazuya. Kazuya accuses Gurney of lying and setting up a trap, but Gurney swears he has nothing to do with this. Another beam is shot, and Gurney protects Kazuya with his body. Soon, the two are surrounded by soldiers of the Baam Empire, and they manage to defeat them all. Kyoshiro then arrives at the island, assuming that Kazuya needed help. He accuses Gurney of setting up a trap (similar to how Kazuya did earlier) but Kazuya defends Gurney. Knowing that Gurney became injured from protecting him, Kazuya tells him to run, but promises a rematch. Gurney nods and flies away. Kyoshiro tries to throw a sword at him, but it hits a tree since Gurney is already in the air.

At Baam, Gurney begs Richter to call off the war and enter peace negotiations with the Earthlings. He tells him Kazuya is a good man and he can see why Erika finds him appealing. Angered, Richter says that negotiations got his father killed, and beats Gurney, before daring him to say that again. Gurney does, and as a result Richter deems him a traitor and orders his execution. Liza smirks as Richter abuses Gurney, happy that her plan worked and she is in his good graces again.

That night, Erika and Margarete free Gurney from his prison cell and arrange a ship for him to go to Earth. Erika asks Gurney to tell Kazuya that she prays for peace between Baam and Earth, and he promises to deliver her message.

Liza and Balbas send another mecha to terrorize Earth, which locks Daimos in its grasp while detonating a bomb. Gurney arrives in his ship and enters the mecha, freeing Daimos. Kazuya asks Gurney why he is helping him, and Gurney says that for peace to exist between Earth and Baam, good men like Kazuya must niot die. He then informs him that Erika prays for peace between Earth and Baam. Gurney then flies the mecha to space so it won't destroy the Earth. As he flies farther and farther away from Earth, Gurney remarks to himself "piercing this universe, into the starry sky, this vast and infinite universe is my home", before the bomb explodes, annihilating him in the process. Kazuya bursts into tears upon seeing him die.

Appearance[]

Gurney has grey skin, with messy teal green hair. His eyes are also a teal green colour, and his tight clothing exposes his bared, muscular arms.

Trivia[]

  • He is named after the character Gurney Halleck from Dune. Like the Dune character, he is a teacher.
