Huge, yet stealthy Skarr. An expert trapper and master of the undergrowth.

His tracks and traps... It should have been obvious from the start, this old hunter sought to draw me in. But what reason drove him to test himself so brutally? That answer I suspect I shall never know.

~ Gurr the Outcast's entry in the Hunter's Journal.

Gurr the Outcast is a minor antagonist in the 2025 indie metroidvania Hollow Knight: Silksong.

He is a rogue member of the Skarrs that dwells within the Far Fields, hunting powerful and well-trained bugs, even his own kin. During the collapse of Pharloom after Hornet accidentally unleashes the Void, Gurr makes it his mission to hunt down the demigod as his final prize before the destruction of the kingdom and its lands.

Appearance[]

Gurr is a heavyset, elderly Skarr clad in a suit made of leaves and vegetation, allowing him to camouflage with the flora. He wears a creature's skull on his head like a hat and noticeably has several green spots on his body, making him a mottled Skarr.

Personality[]

Not much is known about Gurr's personality, seeing as his lack of silk infecting him and belligerent nature means he's not privy to singing his thoughts out to the Needolin. He appears to be a sadistic thrill seeker, regarding Hornet as his "last prey" according to a memory found in a nearby room, where he keeps the corpses of his victims. To this end, Gurr is quite sneaky and cunning, luring in prey with bait to catch them by surprise, displaying an incredible proficiency with various gadgets and traps as well. Despite this, Gurr does seem to have a soft spot as he spares Gilly and only steals her doll, displaying that he may have some affection for small trinkets such as this, and might spare bugs he doesn't consider thrilling enough to hunt.

Biography[]

While Gurr is a mottled Skarr, making him a natural target for the Skarr's prejudice, it's not established what exactly led him to becoming an outcast. While the corpse of a Last Claw is found in Gurr's trophy room, the implications of its presence are dubious as they could've originated from Skarr sent to execute Gurr or the victims of a killing spree that led Gurr to being exiled. Whatever's the case, the fact that the Last Claws are all but extinct in Pharloom implies that Gurr might have something to do with that, though seeing as only two of them are seen in Skarrsinger Karmelita's memory, there probably weren't a lot of them in the first place.

Gurr would take up residence in the Far Fields and set up an underground lair for himself, hunting the various bugs that inhabit the neighbouring areas. The Thread Raker and Craw corpses in his trophy room imply that Gurr has entered Greymoor before, while the Grand Reed corpse there imply that he either snuck into the Citadel and picked one off unnoticed, or he was considered such a threat to the pilgrims that one was sent to (unsuccessfully) eliminate him. Gurr would survive the Haunting and as a result, remain as sane as he was prior to its arrival, being completely free of the threads that afflicted most of his kin.

During the events of Act III, Gurr chances upon Gilly and decides not to kill her, instead stealing her doll and causing her to post a wish for Hornet to track him down. Gurr seems to have learnt of this and, eager to kill a demigod before the kingdom was destroyed, began setting up a fake trail to lure Hornet to his lair. This trap succeeds and Hornet is trapped in a cage which sends her plummeting into Gurr's arena. During his boss fight, Gurr will mainly attack by throwing spiked traps at Hornet which go off after some time, pulling bone spikes from under the floor or simply charging at her. Hornet eventually triumphs and Gurr is defeated, allowing her to enter his trophy room where a memory is located. After dodging one final trap, she retrieves Gilly's doll from a rope and returns it to her, ending the wish questline.

Trivia[]

  • Gurr is the only Skarr to have a non-Haunted death animation.
  • While he's not Haunted, Gurr is still placed under the Haunted tab of the Hollow Knight villains template since the rest of his species fell to the Haunting.
