Gisborne first appears during the third crusade, ordering his fellow crusaders against the Saracens. He serves as Robin of Loxley's commander, whom he used to have a close relationship based on mutual respect, until Robin became disillusioned by the horrors of the crusade and the sadism of his commander. The final breaking point of their relationship comes when Gisborne orders the execution of many prisoners, including a young boy. The boy's father tries to save his son, only to get his arm cut off and watching his son being murdered in front of him.
