There you are. It's a wonder you can hear anything with that racket. Well, don't just stand there gawping - fetch my bags in, and don't give him too much of a tip. I'm sure he brought us the long way around - and found every pothole on the way!
~ Gwen to Morse in Endeavour, Series 8, Episode 2.
I DID NOT KILL HER!
~ Gwen taunted Morse over his mother's death, which is her most infamous quote.

Gwen Morse is the secondary antagonist of the Inspector Morse franchise.

Gwen Morse is the third most dangerous enemy to Morse, only behind Hugo De Vries and the unnamed Freemason leaders. She was Endeavour Morse's abusive stepmother, who mistreated him and tormented him through his entire life.

She was portrayed by the late Edwina Day in Inspector Morse, and her younger self was portrayed by by Lynda Rooke in Endeavour.

Roles[]

In the Inspector Morse novels, Gwen Morse is a mentioned-only character, arguably being the main antagonist in Morse's background story only.

In Inspector Morse TV series, she appeared in as the secondary antagonist in "Cherubim and Seraphim", the fifth episode of Series 6. This is her only full appearance in the original series.

Later, she appeared as a supporting antagonist of the prequel series Endeavour, serving as a minor antagonist in the Series 1 and, arguably, the main antagonist in the Series 8 (for having more personal grudge to Morse than any other villains in the season).

Overview[]

Gwen Morse was the wife of the late Cyril Morse, the mother of Joyce Garrett (née Morse), the step-mother of Detective Chief Inspector Endeavour Morse, the mother-in-law of Keith Garrett and the grandmother of Marilyn Garrett and Wayne Garrett. She greatly despised Endeavour Morse for his father's love over his biological mother, the late Constance Morse.

Biography[]

Endeavour[]

Overall[]

In Endeavour, Gwen appeared in "Home", the Series 1 finale, and later in "Scherzo", the second episode of its Series 8.

Series 1[]

Gwen appeared when Morse arrived back to his house to visit his dying father, much to her displeasure. However, she still begrudgingly allowed Morse to come in and pay his father one final visit.

Series 8[]

Inspector Morse[]

Trivia[]

  • When Morse told Lewis about his childhood, he said his mother Constance died when he was 15. But in the prequel series Endeavour, Morse told Thursday he was 10 when his mother died.
  • Whilst not being a successful murderer, Gwen is definitely one of the most hateful and deplorable villains in the entire Inspector Morse franchise, for her abuse of her stepson, her jealousy to her husband's previous late wife, as well as her action to drive Morse into near suicidal attempt.
    • It is also stated that by the end of "Cherubim and Seraphim", only her own daughter Janet (who is on good term with her half-brother) is willing to accept Gwen, whilst Morse still had grudge to his stepmother to the bitter end.
