Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa is a supporting antagonist and the first boss of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. He is the gatekeeper of the Ashina clan whose task is to stop any intruders from entering the castle.

Backstory[]
Gyoubu was formerly a disgraced member of the Interior Ministry who later became the leader of a group of bandits. He was defeated by Isshin Ashina, but his extraordinary strength impressed the Sword Saint and out of respect, he was given the chance to serve the Ashina clan as one of the Seven Ashina Spears, as well as its main gatekeeper. Three years prior to the main game's events, Gyoubu and Genichiro managed a woeful victory against the Interior Ministry.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice[]
Gyoubu is mentioned two times in conversations between the Ashina soldiers posted across the outskirts. Gyoubu is held in high regard as Ashina's last line of defense and soldiers assure themselves that as long as he is alive, the gates will not be breached. Unfortunately, he is evidently killed by Sekiro upon encountering him near the Ashina Gates.
Personality[]
Little is known about what kind of man Gyoubu is in-game, though from the small bits of lore about him it can be inferred that he is a man of thunderous character. He is quite boastful, claiming that none shall pass the gates to the castle. Despite being a former bandit, he seems to hold the morals of a warrior - respecting those with strength and following them. He is also one of Genichiro's most trusted retainers, implying a sort of friendly camaraderie between the two.
