The Hierarchy of International Vengeance and Extermination (H.I.V.E.) are major antagonists in the DC Comics universe.

It is a terrorist organization of highly trained soldiers led by Queen Bee. It appears mainly in comic books featuring the Teen Titans, having orchestrated several of the team's greatest threats, most notably Deathstroke and Ravager (Grant Wilson)

In some versions, notably the Teen Titans animated series, H.I.V.E. is led by Brother Blood.

History[]

Modern Age[]

The H.I.V.E. was formed by the H.I.V.E. Master, a scientist who brought together seven other criminal scientists who had previously fought and lost their battles against various and unre lated super-heroes. The H.I.V.E. Master believed these scientists would succeed together where they had failed as individuals. The H.I.V.E. first tried to achieve their goal of worldwide terrorism through political means. They attempted to push minor politician Al Diamond into a powerful position in Congress, but their plans were foiled by Daily Planet reporters Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.

Later, while in Asia, the H.I.V.E. Master discovered an alien being with incredible scientific knowledge. He captured the alien and used its knowledge to make the H.I.V.E. into a truly powerful force for evil. This same alien also fathered two children later known as Thunder and Lightning. During its existence several of the original seven H.I.V.E. members died or were captured. They were replaced with new criminal scientists. The H.I.V.E. moved more and more into scientific terrorism, and sought to eliminate the possible threat of super-heroes before they were discovered. To destroy the group known as The Teen Titans, the H.I.V.E. recruited Grant Wilson, son of the internationally known mercenary Deathstroke.

Wilson was given powers and called him- self the Ravager. However, he died in battle and the contract he signed to destroy the Titans was taken over by Deathstroke, who used a psychopathic young girl named Tara Markov to infiltrate the Titans and to betray them. With Terra's help, Deathstroke captured the Titans and brought them to the H.I.V.E.'s undersea headquarters, where they were turned over to the H.I.V.E. Mistress, wife of the H.I.V.E. Master, who had replaced her husband after killing him. The Titans escaped the H.I.V.E., and the undersea headquarters exploded, but not before the H.I.V.E. Mistress killed the seven scientists and herself as well.

The New 52[]

The clandestine organization known as H.I.V.E. was created by persons unknown for ostensibly altruistic reasons. Its avowed purpose, as defined by the ruling H.I.V.E. Queen, is to release the world from the bondage of individual freedoms and create global parity for every living creature on Earth. To these ends, they have abducted children, murdered thousands of innocents, and consorted with criminals, all while making a tidy profit. Casualties have included scientist Dr. Caitlin Snow, who was transformed into Killer Frost after H.I.V.E. sabotaged her invention to protect its own financial interests in the energy industry. But H.I.V.E.'s major area of endeavor is psionics. For years it has stolen humans with telepathic potential, turning them into warriors, research subjects, or drones.
