| ~ Hades revealing himself to Persephone as he claims her soul, his most famous quote. |
Hades, previously known as The Mysterious Stranger, is one of the two villainous main protagonists, alongside Persephone, of the Greek mythology-inspired story series Hades X Persephone Saga, serving as the main antagonist of its first novel A Touch of Darkness.
He is the dark and manipulative gambler who challenges people to try and become the best versions of themselves after he wins their souls in his games, giving them a unique task that would be nearly impossible for them to complete, and then sending them to the afterlife if they can't complete the impossible task.
Biography[]
A Touch of Darkness[]
Hades, disguised as a normal human, meets Persephone at his club, where he offers to teach her how to play cards, since she doesn't know how. After beating her, he reveals himself as Hades, and since all who play and lose to Hades end up losing their soul to him, she is forced into a soul contract with him in order to not die. His contract to her is simple; create life in the underworld within six months, a task chosen specifically for Persephone due to her curse of killing all plants she touches when she tries to make them grow. Added in with the Underworld being a place where no life can survive, the challenge seems impossible.
Over the course of the six months, Hades and Persephone start to build a relationship. While they both have a strong pull towards one another, they are both emotionally stunted. She is unable to be her true self because of the looming threat of her mother snatching her back to live in the skies and he has stopped believing in a happy ending for himself long ago. this results in Hades and Persephone unintentionally but repeatedly hurting each other, all of which could have been avoided with a small amount of honest communication.
However, at the end of this book when Persephone and Hades finally seem to be opening up to one another, the goddess of love, Aphrodite, reveals to her that Hades' affections may be a result of a separate bet that the two gods made made in which Hades was to get someone to fall in love with him. This causes another argument between Hades and Persephone. In her rage, Persephone accidentally fulfills the contract by creating plants, thus making life in the underworld, and thus setting her soul free. Persephone and Hades eventually reconcile because he explains that the bet was completely unrelated to how he felt about Persephone.

Trivia[]
- Before revealing himself to Persephone as Hades, he is called "The Mysterious Stranger". This is possibly a reference to Mark Twain's satanic character of the same name.
